SummaryThere are a symphony of almost undetectable sounds that make up a moment of silence, and Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is determined to catalogue them all. Through his job as a New York City “house tuner,” the hyper-methodical Peter works meticulously to diagnose the discordant ambient noises—produced by everything from wind patterns to humming ... Art is supposed to help us see the world in novel ways. The Sound of Silence, in its quietly exhilarating manner, may make us hear it differently, too.

Even the best records start skipping after a while, and once The Sound of Silence gives in to the demands of conventional narrative it begins feeling less fresh and new than it did when it was simply introducing us to Peter and his work.

The characters are compelling, but I would like to have known more about how Peter came to this place in his life.

A wonderful high concept is compromised for another story of lonely people learning to connect.

The Sound of Silence is a deeply silly movie that takes itself incredibly seriously, and believe it or not, that’s its great pleasure.

Has a compelling hook ... but the follow-through leaves something to be desired.

Sarsgaard and Jones are good actors, and both are fine. The real star, though, is sound designer Ian Gaffney-Rosenfeld and his team, who bring a depth and dimension to the story that sorely needs it.

The concept of noise impacting your mood is something that fits pretty much anywhere, and that very same concept is enough to arouse interest and curiosity. However, the concept never makes of this a prominent film, because the whole ordeal is a boring and flat story, unable to do its idea justice. Both Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones are sufficiently good enough to prevent the film from becoming lost, even given its short duration, but they're not enough to transform this story into something more significant or transcendental. The Sound of Silence is an insecure film that never seems to have found the best way to proceed and be more suggestive, or at least more diligent, so the result is bitter and underwhelming.
