It is an uncompromising work that will make many viewers frustrated and even furious. I adored pretty much every single glorious, gorgeous goddamn minute of it.

The movie nearly killed him (Gilliam). Yet the victory isn’t just that he finished it, but that he’s fashioned something so magnificent in its messiness. He should be proud as well as relieved. The impossible dream is dead. But long live The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Really enjoyed this - feels like one of the only films trying to be imaginative and challenging in the last few years (at least in English).. a reminder of what film can be. Thanks Terry!

It is certainly too long and too messy, too indulgent in some parts and too starved in others to be an unqualified success. But the surprise of it is that there are times, like the inspired first act, when it really does work, when it seems to have a kind of manic energy, a sheer joy at existing, which certainly makes it a far more engaging picture than Gilliam’s last.

Neither a splendid phoenix from the ashes nor a complete failure, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is erratic, occasionally inspired, occasionally dull, but shot through with a grandiose sense of ambition. Plus, Driver and Pryce add some magic along the way.

The entire saga of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is compelling in showing the burden that journey can take, even if the end results don’t make for Gilliam’s finest hour (or two).

Apart from the relief of seeing a conclusion to a long story, there’s scant pleasure to be found in the long-winded and jumbled The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Large-scale filmmaking of this kind to some degree is probably always an adventurer's folly, with an unhinged visionary tilting at windmills in a valiant quest to tame fantasy and reality into companionable travelers that will live forever. But rarely have such brave deeds yielded so meager a reward.

Wonderful, frustrating, amusing film. Despite hearing of its long gestation, I really knew very little of the actual plot. The movie is confusing at times and overlong, but is nonetheless delightful fun. Twenty-five years of waiting may have pumped expectations too high, but the film--while no masterpiece--delivers the goods.

As in the classic play, it combines reality and fantasy with the hallmark of director Gilliam. The only downside is that for some viewers it becomes confusing or overwhelming. It is not the best of the director out of the Monty Python but the effort is noticeable.

I love Gilliams oeuvre , I think Zero Theorem is one of the underrated gems of the last decade and Twelve Monkeys is an absolute masterpiece. However, with Quichote hefinally OverGilliamed himself with Chaos and weird plot intros and outros and artsy twists and turns . The stuff about the super cuddly Muslims was probably what made this the very first Gilliam film I actually had to force myself to finish it. A shame , because with this source and this director... could've been a classic .

Ok, this a bonkers and absurd film, just like 'Brazil.' I know, the comparison may be exaggerated, but I really enjoyed Terry Gilliam's latest work. There are some problematic themes and characterizations, and the screenplay is all over the place, but the film industry critique and the way Gilliam addresses the pursuit of dreams are on point.
