[Taylor] deftly translates the bleak, raw-boned menace and tricky time signatures of Train’s intertwined plotlines, and draws remarkably vivid performances from his cast, particularly his two female leads.

As a big-screen thriller, The Girl on a Train is just so-so, but taken as 112 minutes of upscale psychodramatic confessional bad-behavior porn, it generates a voyeuristic zing that’s sure to carry audiences along.

I don't usually watch mystery thriller dramas - I generally only go to big budget action movies. I knew next to nothing going in about what this movie was about, which is probably the best way to go into this movie (so in this review I'm not going to discuss the plot at all, just how I felt about the movie - it's better this way). I knew Emily Blunt was in the movie and that it was based on a novel and that's really about this it. Despite all this, I actually liked this movie. Who hasn't observed strangers from a distance and imagined our own life stories for them? What if we got lost in our own imagined thoughts and turned them into a dangerous obsession? It's an interesting premise on which to base a story. The movie kept me guessing; it wasn't predictable. It had me feeling disturbed, engaged, sad, and cringing at the unfolding events. I guess this is exactly what you'd want from a mystery thriller.

I have lost faith in a metacritic, if I listened to the reviews is would have missed out on this great movie. It was great acting and a good plot. Emily blunt deserves an academy award for her amazing acting, she was sooo believable. The movie keeps you in a suspense so that you don't know who the villain is till the end. Great movie, must see. Won't be disappointed

The Girl on the Train engages more than it rivets and brings goosebumps to skin more than chilling to the bone.

It is a somber slog through the lives of one miserable wretch after another.

The film’s flaws aside (those will come later), Blunt’s performance is a hell of a thing, wholly lacking in vanity and brimming with honest, ugly feeling.

The overall mood created by the crummy, pinched visuals and logic-strained rhythm is of something scanned and discarded, like a tabloid article or a Lifetime movie.

kinda reminds me of 'Before I go to sleep' or 'Side effect', the problem is, it hasn't outperformed any of those

The good news is it's very watchable. The not-so-good news: it's silly and doesn't make much sense. But, again, to accentuate the positive: I really liked the casting, especially of minor characters. Surprising and great to see Lisa Kudrow, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Laura Prepon even if they don't get much screen time. Actors like these add value. A fun enough movie. Dumb but fun.

Choppy editing, **** screenplay, low-rent version Jenifer Lawrence as Megan and Emily Blunt's inconsistent accent and let's-put-blush-on-her-cheeks-so-we-know-she's-an-alcoholic-and-film-a-lot-of-shaky-face-shots proves that you can't make a movie in four months to ride the wave of the novel's popularity

Behold a miserable adaptation of a novel. This should be a lesson in selecting the right filmmaker (director of THE HELP?) to tell your story. Every character was one-dimensional with a story that is so predictable that it's never elevated above a Lifetime original movie. Blunt's amazing performance as a drunk is wasted on every other character that never defies any of their stereotypes. Men are violent sexual predators, a prisoner to their own transgressions, and women are their lovelorn objects who enjoy being the object of their desire more than they hate the loneliness of the live it brings. This falls into the genre of suburban thriller and I would agree with the critic that stated if you wanted to see GONE GIRL by the director of THE HELP -- watch this. Or don't and say that you did - you already know the ending.
