New York Post
Splendidly spectacular, intelligent and very well-acted.

When a filmmaker heavy-handedly imposes his contemporary values on a classic of popular art, it's devilishly hard not to destroy or invalidate the very thing that made it a classic.

The book was a masterpiece, and the adaptation fantastic is quite good. The desert the cold england, the battlefield scene are exactly how I imagined it in the book.

A rousing tragedy that manages to become a heart warming story. It has many wide scenic shots which are spectacular to look at. The movie has this parallel between the opening sequence and parts of the later story, like the rugby scene or the ball room scene where they form a square. However the execution of the story is a bit idiotic, the character's decision making is rather dubious but at the end of the day it can all be forgiven once the wholeness of the story comes together, this is a bane and a boon, at some point I wondered what the meaning of it all was, but later on it became clear. And just as a history bit, the British were in fact the "good" guys in the story, the Arabs being the ones who had conquered and enslaved Sudan. The movie is along the same time with Khartoum, which is perhaps even more tragic.

It's a pretty compelling yarn, not to mention full of pretty pictures, and yet it could be so much more than that.

All these intriguing good intentions, however, have largely gone for naught because of a variety of missteps, starting with an increasing implausible plot as well as the fact that Ledger's Harry looks about as likely to pass for an Arab as the Mahdi is to pass for Queen Victoria.

Works as pure escapist entertainment, but it's on the cusp of being smarter -- making it all the more frustrating.

Illogical and glum. [30 Sept 2002, p. 145]

Such few assets aren't enough to alleviate the film's shallowness.

A fun adventure film that stars the talented Heath Ledger with good action scenes and a great story.
