It’s rare to see a cinematic drama executed with such consistent care as Supernova, written and directed by Harry Macqueen and starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. And here, that care pays off to devastating effect.

In a story that is as heartfelt as it is heartbreaking, Supernova is a moving look at the emotional toll that dementia can have on the powerless sufferer and their selfless caretaker, revealing that one can never have too much time with their loved ones.

McQueen has matters of life and death on his mind, and the final act of “Supernova” puts them on the table with a frankness that’s admirable without wholly succeeding as drama; the script’s schematic nature shows through the cracks even as the actors themselves can’t be faulted.

Quietly immersive and poignant, Supernova excels as a showcase for leads Tucci and Firth, even when the story can't quite match them.

As a film about two gay men in their middle age, Supernova does all the right things, anchors its sense of conviction in rhythms and silences, in-jokes and private conflicts, that cohere into a natural portrait of being together. In a word, it’s a solid, emotive drama, all the more so for the pain at the movie’s center being equally natural, valid, inevitable.

Supernova, despite a title that suggests a bright and glorious burst of energy, is a ponderous movie, a story about the end of life so determined to be taken gravely that it doesn’t let anything actually live. It’s abstractly tragic, about a vague idea of something rather than anything or anyone specific. Dementia is scary and sad. That’s about as particular as Supernova gets.

This is a gently moving film. It features stellar performances from the two main actors, Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. The last 2 scenes are very emotional. There are some memorable quotes, such as 'being sad something is gone just means it was great while it was there.' It's a thought provoking film - it'd be hard not to feel sorry for both of the main characters. I would definitely recommend this poignant film, yes.

Here in this film, what is most appreciated is that the story transmits emotion without resorting to simpleton or tear-jerking sentimentality; that and through outstanding performances by Firth and Tucci. To see a weekend evening, stress free.

This is some of the heaviest stuff I've watched so far this year. Sam and Tusker - the protagonist couple - just have this brilliant dynamic and the whole movie turns from a fun field trip into a melancholic drama. I never really tear up while watching films, but I was bloody close during the last 20 or so minutes. It's only 90 minutes long, but it felt like 3 hours, I don't know whether that was a good or a bad thing, maybe I just wanted to escape this carnage mentally, but also felt tied to the screen at the same time. The characters just feel so real, when Tusker throws a party for him and Sam, everything involved just feels as if someone had filmed a - surely tragic - gathering and Tusker and Sam can just be who they are, an old couple with its regular problems, no corny dialogue needed.
If you're in a good mood and want to change this, I definitely recommend watching this.

My husband and I have been together 31 years, so this movie has particular relevance, although the subject certainly translates to any couple. Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci play 20-year partners who take a road trip across England. It’s an especially poignant journey, because one of them is facing the escalating symptoms from his fatal disorder. Obviously, such intense circumstances demand potent performances and this duo captures their trying complexities with subtle grace that leads to genuine emotional impact. Writer/director Harry Macqueen tells the story with understated, yet effective sensitivity. This universally important medical dilemma is faced with modest grace in an intimate and affecting love story.
