Graced with a clever script, a cast that will make you smile until you ache, and a snappy sense of pace, this summer '92 hit is the funniest by-the-numbers comedy in who knows how long.

Despite its predictability and sappiness, this conventional comedy about a worldly lounge singer who masquerades as a nun as part of a witness protection program busts loose as one of the funniest -- and happiest -- films in a long time.

This is one of my go to movies when I'm feeling down. I remember seeing it in theaters when I was a kid and I just couldn't stop laughing. The movie isn't fantastically directed but Whoopi Goldberg owns the show with a fabulous cast of supporting players which include a hilarious Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus), an amazing Maggie Smith (Dowton Abbey), Wendy Makkena, Mary Wickes and a slimy but sexy Harvey Keitel (Bad Lieutenant). Goldberg starts off the film as a headliner of a 60s style girl group at a casino. She's secretly dating the casinos mob boss and she accidentally witnesses a murder. Suddenly shes on the run and than is put into a nunnery to keep her hidden until her court date. It's a bunch of fun mishaps that leads her to the choir and some truly outrageous musical numbers. It may be familiar but it's fun and heartwarming. One of my all time favorites. Budget: $31m
Domestic Box Office: $140m
Worldwide Box Office: $232m 4.5/5

that music has class, has gospel music, is interesting it's fun to watch. Too many people say i laughed for 5 minutes.... this isnt a one woman show it's a movie about a woman who dates a mafioso and ends up in a covent to be protected... turns out she does a lot of good to the church in that city with her music even the pope comes to seet their representation at the end.

Every once in a while a simple, formulaic plot is elevated by a good cast and energetic direction, and Sister Act is an irresistibly entertaining case in point. [29 May 1992, p.18]

Despite its hopeless predictability, this is one of those preposterous and sweet-natured family frolics that you find yourself enjoying in spite of yourself. Check your critical faculties in at the door and get stuck in.

A bizarre mix of actors goes some way towards bolstering this flyweight caper; but the last third degenerates into farce, with nuns and thugs playing cat-and-mouse in a Reno casino. A one-note movie.

There's no comic edge at all to Sister Act. It's all Whoopi and the three sisters, battling plastic writing and chintzy production values, convincing you that filmmaking this pedestrian ought to be declared the eighth deadly sin. [29 May 1992, p.34]

Director Ardolino and his unnamed colleagues should be given a couple of swift raps across the palm with a ruler.

A good comedy with a unique set up and one of Whoopi Goldbergs most memorable roles. It is the story of the lounge singer Deloris Wilson. After she witness accidentally the murder of an informant by her gangster boyfriend she is in great danger. They had to silence her as prosecution witness as quick as possible. To protect her she is send to a catholic convent by the police and has to pretend to be a nun. I stop here to avoid spoilers. A great set up to a hilarious situation. The story is really good and interesting. The humor works well in this fish out of water situation. The cast is excellent. Whoopi Goldberg is remembered well for her good performance but I have to praise a lot of the cats too as I think all the nuns like Kathy Smith, Mary Wickes, Maggie Smith and the others gave a great and believable performance. Another strength is the soundtrack. It won me over while I do not like songs like this. Overall this is a comedy I can recommend easily. It has a good story, a lot of humor and entertained me from start to finish.

I just watched "Sister Act" in 2021 for the first time in 25 years. I think I went into this movie with the wrong attitude. I was really expecting it to be funny, and I just couldn't find more than 5 things to chuckle at. "Sister Act" isn't a bad movie. It has a lot of good things going for it, but I just wanted it to have more going on in each scene to keep me engaged. You shouldn't hate it, but I can't imagine anyone truly loving it. I give it a C - If you’ve already seen all of the A’s and B’s, but you insist on seeing a movie, try this one out

An iconic pop culture feature with a funny cast.
Obviously this is not a movie known for its scenario, its construction and the evolution of characters... I have to agree with Angie Errigo from 'Empire' on this one : the plot is mind-numbing and jerky (as the first chanting part with Sister Mary Clarence already is a triumph of childish naivety), charcters are one-dimensioned, the jokes are just obscene.
Interesting acting skills from Kathy Najimy (Sister Mary Patrick) and Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert) who appear as two sidekicks for a stroy based itslef on a joke. Good performance also for Maggie Smith (Mother Superior) but who could have been more highlighted if she had not played the famous role she will later take on in the saga 'Harry Potter'.
I can't deny the epic ending and the splendour of singing scenes.
There may not be much more to expect than 100 minutes of mindless entertainment.
