To like that kind of story is to like this kind of movie.

The slogan for Red Planet could be "In space no one can hear you yawn."

Most movie critics are hard against Red Planet because of its standard characters and modest dialogues, giving it as low as 3 or 4 points from 10. From my point of view Red Planet is definitely not as bad as that. I would give it (only) 2 points bellow max 10 and its drawbacks are two: - there are quite a few unrealistic moments in the movie (breathable atmosphere made by bugs impossibly fast; lifting off from Mars in an old, unpressurized sample return vehicle and others); - some things the movie left unexplained (for example - how the habitat got destroyed?). Despite those minuses, Red Planet has got the best visuals of Mars for over a decade when modern Martian movies came out (totally crappy, but visually enjoyable "The Last Days on Mars" and of course gorgeous "The Martian").

When it comes to special effects, the filmmakers have spared no expense. But when it comes to the story, audiences have been shortchanged.

Moss -- in her first big role since "The Matrix" -- is the main reason to see Red Planet, a badly written and visually scenic space opus.

Isn't as bad as the year's first abysmal Martian movie, "Mission to Mars," but it's pretty close.

Crash-lands as disastrously as the heroes and never quite recovers its wits.

There still is no life on Mars. Red Planet is airless.

I've watched Red Planet many times over the years. It's not amazing, but I have a soft spot for movies about/on Mars.

Predictable yet entertaining despite a few factual errors, ropey CGI and missteps, not as stupid and clichéd as you might have heard. Some nice design elements and an excellent soundtrack by Graeme Revell! Features numerous tropes popular in films of its kind; mission goes t*ts up 20 minutes in? Check. Noble sacrifice? Check. Could have been better, but decent fare for what it is.

Red Planet classic Sci-Fi film of the early 2000s. The plot is banal and simple, the graphics are not impressive, the ship is naturally always artificial gravity. All actions are ordinary (!), People do not astranauts make it easier than simple, although at the beginning of the film it is said that this is the first expedition to Mars. But further ignoring banal conventions only continues. And you watch this film more by inertia, not expecting anything from it. This is a bad Sci-Fi, an even worse action movie, and certainly not a thriller. It's better to watch another Sci-Fi, a 2000 film with a budget of $80 million should be ashamed of such a schedule.

Red Planet had the potential to be a gripping sci-fi survival film, but it falls short due to weak writing and lackluster execution. The plot follows a team of astronauts sent to Mars for a critical mission, but the movie struggles to maintain tension or make the stakes feel real. The directing is serviceable but uninspired, never really leaning into the survival elements or making the action feel urgent. Visually, the cinematography does a decent job of capturing Mars' desolate landscape, though the CGI, while better than expected, feels underwhelming for its time. The film misses opportunities to create a more immersive or visually striking atmosphere. The acting is mostly passable, with a few performances standing out more than others, but the script does the cast no favors. Dialogue is stiff, and character interactions often feel unnatural or rushed. The story also takes some questionable leaps in logic, which make it hard to stay invested. The AI element, a key part of the plot, is handled in a way that feels inconsistent. The score doesn't add much to the experience, and the dramatic moments often lack weight, partially due to the uninspired music choices. Overall, Red Planet had a solid premise but failed to execute it in a way that makes it worth revisiting

Thanks to Red Planet's awful boredom and notably sorry characters, it's nice visuals, talented cast and the interesting plot don't feel anything new to the audience.
