Quiz Lady
Quiz Lady tells the story of estranged sisters that go on a quiz show to save their dog, after a moblord abducts the dog because of unpaid debts by their runaway mother.
This movie thrives on the undeniable chemistry between its leads. Awkwafina, renowned for her exaggerated comedic style, brings a refreshing touch to her role as a laid-back, reclusive game show whiz. Conversely, Sandra Oh, typically known for her calm, dramatic performances, shines as an effervescent and free-spirited character, delivering a breathtaking portrayal. The delightful switch in the leads' usual roles adds to the enjoyment of the film.
The sister duo brings heart and sisterly warmth to this movie, especially Sandra Oh's character. The comedy isn't always spot-on but for most parts it's good. The story isn't grand or special and during the first half I felt it may amount to nothing but by the time the end credits rolled I found the entire movie to be well worth my time and honestly wanting more from the sister duo. There are some silly and eye-roll-inducing moments but given the movie's style, these are forgivable.
Once again, Sandra Oh is just brilliant in this movie and I want to see her in more comedic roles.

Although there are occasional awkward moments in the humour and Sandra Oh's character sometimes feels a bit too much, the story itself is formulaic, and the chemistry between Sandra Oh and Awkwafina still manages to bring a heartfelt smile by the end.

Sometimes I'm curious why a movie gets review bombed, but other times I wish someone would have just told me to just watch the movie and enjoy the heck out of it.

(Mauro Lanari) Farrell's zany humour doesn't work on its own, it needs the support **** screenplay like those of Apatow and the debutant McKay, otherwise it gets lost in films that, as in this case, wink at the Asian market and imitate "Slumdog Millionaire" (Boyle 2008).

Follows an increasingly straightforward and predictable plot. But remains endearing due to its 2 leads who do a great job.

For me - I loved Awkwafina's "awkward" character work, but I have to admit I didn't gel with Sandra's casting initially due to the age-difference that made her feel more caricature/mis-cast. However, if you get past the age-difference, you can actually see an honesty in the roles. The thing about this movie (IMHO) is that it relies on fractured family dynamics, and if you haven't experienced that, then you may not get it. I think perhaps there were other things that put people off - looking at the scores - that I didn't see. I will say Jason Schwartzman's characterisation was the weakest element... it looked every bit tv. My own take home message - as personal as it is - is that this is about the linkage through time between strangers who happen to be siblings. What brings them together is a shared familial experience - a history that comes with a lot of baggage. They are are both 'lost' in their own way. It's not a co-dependent thing, it's a shared "ascent" story - they thought they were traversing different mountains - they were just climbing on different (disconnected) faces. They lift each other up (even if they don't know it). Wasn't revolutionary - but FFS - Hollywood is just ramming style of enjoyment down our throat these days. I just wanted a feel-rewarded movie. The story isn't BIG - but it's earnest (and yes, a bit schmaltzy), in a way that I don't think I've seen in 5-10 years out of Hollywood... and for once, a comedy ACTUALLY has comedic moments. There are too many movies that are supposed comedies that actually are just nasty sarcastic attacks on their characters... My point is - this was actually a movie that I think captured/executed exactly on it's message - not perfect, but damn satisfying. My wife and I "enjoyed" it more than almost ALL of the movies we've seen this year, because it was ON POINT - and we weren't being preached to or berated at. It was a simple movie with a simple **** it made me realise how over a lot of the modern takes I am.

It has some funny moments, but that doesn't mean this is a bland comedy with a cliched message about sisterly love. Linguini was great, though.

This was pretty much an average movie, all around. We'd rate this: "if you're really bored then maybe waste some time on this movie. It isn't horrible."

Something about this movie just wasn’t resonating with me. As much as I like my fellow Ontario Canadian Sandra Oh, I feel like she was a bit too old for the part she was playing here. The poor casting continues with that Akwafina chick! I’m not too familiar with her, but here she just looks like a frumpy, grumpy butch! Doesn’t help that she sounds like a man. Watching her was actually kind of irritating. Sooooo…bad casting. I also found the script a bit weak. Sorry folks.

Lightweight comedy brought up the scale by some heavyweight talents. An enjoyable romp that comes in right on time.

Despite a few laugh-out-loud moments, this film limps along to its very predictable conclusion. With the exception of Sandra Oh (who knocks it out of the park) lots of 1-dimensional characters with not a lot to add to the plot (why was Holland Taylor's character even in this movie???). If you love Sandra Oh, watch it. Otherwise, not sure it is worth the time over better movies/series currently available.

A good comedy, that doesn't reach the highs of the greats but is heartwarming enough to keep you invested.
This is a good movie from start to finish, it is consistent enough to have a good flow but some of the side plots are a bit tacky and unrealistic.
However, the pacing is coupled well enough with the heartwarming story it tries to tell between the sisters. What I like about this film is that it doesn't lead heavily into our realism but stays in a kind of "There is always hope in the world" type of realism, not that there isn't any in real life, it's just hard to come by. This film, made me smile because it has personality and a good message that people can relate to. Anyway, overall it's a good watch, a quick flick that you'll probably not ever watch a second time, but it is satisfying all the way through, maybe a bit too predictable, in dialogue and scenes.
Maybe the film could have gained the audience's attention more by somehow involving them in the quiz questions. 7/10, It is a solid film, it doesn't take any story-based, or creative filming risks but does enough to make you invested.
Awkwafina wasn't annoying in this one, that's good and is it just me or is Sandra getting old?
Will Ferrel is also looking tired, I Hope he will still be here for a Megamind 2.
That's it, watch this one when you have nothing else to watch.

There is no shortage of talent in this movie, and it got some genuine laughs out of me at certain moments, but sometimes no matter how hard you try, weak scripts are weak scripts and nothing of substance can be done to make them work.Quiz Lady is the kind of comedy that wants to succeed with only good intentions but lacks the humorous quality to pull it ****'s a pity for Sandra Oh, as you can tell she did put more effort into her performance, while Awkwafina, on the other hand, once again proves that her acting and comedic range is extremely minuscule.

Funny, heartwarming comedy film of the year. Even supporting actors, actresses also absolutely fabulous.

In a fun switch on the expected, Awkwafina plays the introverted braianac, while Sandra Oh gets to be the wild sister. When their mom goes missing, they have to figure out how to pay off her debts and get back their kidnapped dog. Since the smart sister is an at-home whiz at a long-running TV quiz show, she ends up a contestant. The comic energy that drives this duo makes for a fun pairing. Tony Hale, Will Ferrell and Jason Swartzman add enjoyable supporting comedy moments (with one surprise cameo in his final movie). While there's not a lot of outright laughter, there's plenty of exuberance energy, esp. Oh in her outrageous outfits and attitude to match.
