The film is funny but also manages to be a smart comedy that feeds off its dramatic moments for a story that shines thanks to the depth of sisterly love.

It may not be laugh-out-loud funny at every turn, but Quiz Lady, with an irresistible cast, is entertaining with just the right amount of heart and energy.

Funny, heartwarming comedy film of the year. Even supporting actors, actresses also absolutely fabulous.

Sometimes I'm curious why a movie gets review bombed, but other times I wish someone would have just told me to just watch the movie and enjoy the heck out of it.

Quiz Lady, a mostly winning comedy directed by Jessica Yu, is elevated most of all on the shoulders of Oh’s delightful and nuanced performance.

They mix like Fireball and water, but the odd couple nonetheless shares a sensational chemistry, building on the base amusement of seeing Oh let her extension-laden hair down and Awkwafina crimp the straight-man character into weird new shapes.

Quiz Lady spends most of its time being loud, broad and silly. That’s sort of the point, but it can also wear thin when the second most heartwarming scene in the movie comes from Will Ferrell.

In Quiz Lady, the sum total is a heartfelt but uneven shrug that probably should have been better than it is.

The 99-minute film is long on yelling and guffaws, short on punchlines.

For me - I loved Awkwafina's "awkward" character work, but I have to admit I didn't gel with Sandra's casting initially due to the age-difference that made her feel more caricature/mis-cast. However, if you get past the age-difference, you can actually see an honesty in the roles. The thing about this movie (IMHO) is that it relies on fractured family dynamics, and if you haven't experienced that, then you may not get it. I think perhaps there were other things that put people off - looking at the scores - that I didn't see. I will say Jason Schwartzman's characterisation was the weakest element... it looked every bit tv. My own take home message - as personal as it is - is that this is about the linkage through time between strangers who happen to be siblings. What brings them together is a shared familial experience - a history that comes with a lot of baggage. They are are both 'lost' in their own way. It's not a co-dependent thing, it's a shared "ascent" story - they thought they were traversing different mountains - they were just climbing on different (disconnected) faces. They lift each other up (even if they don't know it). Wasn't revolutionary - but FFS - Hollywood is just ramming style of enjoyment down our throat these days. I just wanted a feel-rewarded movie. The story isn't BIG - but it's earnest (and yes, a bit schmaltzy), in a way that I don't think I've seen in 5-10 years out of Hollywood... and for once, a comedy ACTUALLY has comedic moments. There are too many movies that are supposed comedies that actually are just nasty sarcastic attacks on their characters... My point is - this was actually a movie that I think captured/executed exactly on it's message - not perfect, but damn satisfying. My wife and I "enjoyed" it more than almost ALL of the movies we've seen this year, because it was ON POINT - and we weren't being preached to or berated at. It was a simple movie with a simple **** it made me realise how over a lot of the modern takes I am.

Lightweight comedy brought up the scale by some heavyweight talents. An enjoyable romp that comes in right on time.

In a fun switch on the expected, Awkwafina plays the introverted braianac, while Sandra Oh gets to be the wild sister. When their mom goes missing, they have to figure out how to pay off her debts and get back their kidnapped dog. Since the smart sister is an at-home whiz at a long-running TV quiz show, she ends up a contestant. The comic energy that drives this duo makes for a fun pairing. Tony Hale, Will Ferrell and Jason Swartzman add enjoyable supporting comedy moments (with one surprise cameo in his final movie). While there's not a lot of outright laughter, there's plenty of exuberance energy, esp. Oh in her outrageous outfits and attitude to match.
