Becoming a parent means living for another life as much as––if not more than––your own. There’s nothing straightforward about it. At times, this film is a bit too straightforward.

“Our Son” seems to be for writers and other 2SLGBTQIA insiders. It feels like a pointless emotional drama that moves too fast and is off-putting. It makes the plot of every divorced father can relate to: what the **** is this about. If there is a theme for actors writing for other actors' feelings, this movie is it. And, it goes too fast. The story tells about perceptions and intentions of 2SLGBTQ couples, as though structure is the enemy, but it all happens too quickly. For instance, where does the significance of the upper middle class come from? This example obfuscates any version of reality by moving past the audience's understanding of reality to the drama.

“Sweet” and “sensitive” may win the day. But this fight over Our Son is a little bland and predigested, and even if that underscores the point that marriage and family and the dynamics that create dysfunction are all the same (“Open marriage” included.), that doesn’t give this affecting film much room for surprise.

All the characters are rounded, fallible and likable in equal measure, and even if the score is a bit syrupy, it’s a pleasant, engaging watch.

When given the space to explore the knottiness of being a gay man in a world taking but tentative steps toward recognizing the community’s full humanity, Luke Evans provides the complex representation that audiences are craving.

Without a more psychologically insightful script and less predictable story developments, Our Son shows that gay couples’ problems can be just as uninteresting as any other couples’ problems. Welcome to post-marriage equality humdrum!

Our son In this heartfelt narrative, a gay couple embarks on the challenging journey of divorce, entangled in a poignant custody battle. The storyline, while seemingly uncomplicated, distinguishes itself by embracing an authentic simplicity. Although it may occasionally appear unadorned, this simplicity serves as a genuine reflection of life. While the film doesn't extensively delve into character development, the characters' motivations remain transparent. The adept performances of Billy Porter and Luke Evans gracefully elevate the film, injecting it with an abundance of emotion and authenticity. Christopher Woodley, in the role of the titular son, delivers a performance that is both revelatory and deeply touching. Furthermore, the cinematography, direction, and soundtrack collaborate seamlessly to enhance the inherent simplicity of the movie, contributing to its overall impact. 7/10
