The film ends on a slightly too simplistic, almost crass note regarding that point, but it cannot take away from its overall highly sensitive and formally rigorous exploration of nostalgia and of the other, different relationships people can afford to have with their past.

Martone’s depiction of crime is at once expressive and economic, a world of danger boiled down to pregnant pauses and minute gestures.

This is cinema! It has everything and more. Like a more realistic view on crime. On old age. It lifts up a part of the veil of evil, and shows the outcome of different choises. If you have parents, this is a movie for you. Or take them along... A very humane film, never boring like Aftersun that gets higher ratings, zealous but never mucous. And a little bit of music, although I was so immerged in the story I cant say if there was more. You should be on your way to the theater already, before the movie disapears again.

If yielding to nostalgia often makes people recall a more affectionate and wistful version of what actually was, this stirring, evocative film likely will leave viewers haunted by what might have been.

As the two men circle each other in the film’s second half, it shifts from contemplative drama to full-blown suspenseful thriller. It is in the latter mode that Mantone shines best as a filmmaker and Pierfrancesco Favino does as an actor.

Even in its more generic stretches, Martone’s latest feels both inviting and convincingly inhabited, a siren song to the past that confronts us with a violent, unromantic present, paved under with the same old, blood-washed cobblestones.

Martone crafts a passionate, angry film that is full of atmosphere and great performances, but never fully convincing or compelling as a drama

Meandering but richly detailed drama.

(Mauro Lanari) Mario Mattone (="Brick") builds another low wall of his fluctuating career: unable to hit two films in a row, and since the previous one was at least decent, I was seized by fear and trembling for "Nostalgia", the fruition of which I duly postponed to this period of Lenten penance. My skepticism has been farsighted: he dreamed of being Proust, he has woken up in Merola's shoes.
