Art itself should seek a restraining order against anyone who insists, “Here is the one thing that Mother! means!”

A sick joke, an urgent warning and a roar into the abyss, Mother! earns its exclamation mark three times over and more.

mother! is a fearless and unsettling cinematic assault. Jennifer Lawrence delivers an extraordinary, emotionally raw performance that anchors the film’s chaos with heartbreaking vulnerability. Aronofsky’s vision is provocative, divisive, and unforgettable. A bold masterpiece that deserves every bit of a perfect score.

In my opinion, the film is not an allegory for anything. It is a depiction of human nature in situations where the boundaries of intimacy are removed and a person becomes himself. Civilization exists only because people have learned to respect each other's individuality. The film is a masterful thought experiment in depicting a situation where this defense mechanism is absent.

mother! is at times horrifying, at times riveting, at times baffling, and at times like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

It’s more engrossing than terrifying, horrific instead of simply scary.

What is less certain is whether the breadcrumbs that are available to the viewer the first time through mother! will be satisfying enough for them to do more than run a quick Google search to provide some answers.

Yet the movie’s grasp of experience feels tenuous, trippy, and, dare one say, adolescent; if you gave an extremely bright fifteen-year-old a bag of unfamiliar herbs to smoke, and forty million dollars or so to play with, Mother! would be the result.

Nothing about mother! makes one lick of sense as Darren Aronofsky’s corny vision of madness turns more hilarious than scary. With so much crap around to clog the drain, I hesitate to label it the “Worst movie of the year” when “Worst movie of the century” fits it even better.

"mother!" is visceral mental breakdown that grabs your attention from moment one and never lets you go or gives you time to breathe.

Disturbing. Some scenes are a bit too disturbing. It is in the horror genre, correctly framed, but it is not scary, but rather disturbing, disgusting, frustrating. I was really thinking during the movie "what a sick mind someone must have to conceive something like this". The symbolism of the film is fascinating... but I can't say that I realized it during the film, but only after reading the reviews. I would have seen the film differently if the symbolism had been more obvious. Actors played very well.

Sure the acting was alright. I believed them. But the IN YOUR FACE metaphor was laughable. It was a joke. This movie was so pretentious I almost couldn't finish it. It is trying so hard to be shocking it makes me sick. I will never watch this movie again and am thinking twice about watching anything Darren Aronofsky is a part of.
