Mary Magdalene

Simultaneously gorgeous and eye-opening, the film uses its grace to preach about the potential of storytelling — especially when it comes from an underrepresented perspective. Davis’ movie contemplates miracles and acts of love I’d heard about during a countless amount of hours at Sunday mass and beyond. But through the profoundly compassionate lens of Mary Magdalene, it felt as if I was learning about them for the first time.

I appreciate the aim of Mary Magdalene, and the ways it reimagines a familiar story with modern implications, even when it falls flat.

This is a noble effort, but ultimately Mary Magdalene isn’t much less of a mystery than she was at the start of the journey.

The film itself is not a success, but the performance by Mara is complex and profound. If for no other reason, see it for her.

The overall effect is glassy and inert, with Rooney Mara’s Mary an oddly elusive presence in the film that carries her name.

The performances of Mara and Phoenix are careful and respectful, though with nothing like the lightning-flash of energy and scorn that they have given to secular roles in the past.

As the plot mechanically moves through Jesus’s greatest hits, the narrative focuses less and less on Mary Magdalene until her life feels completely beside the point.

There is not that much info from Mary Magdalene before she joined Jesus... some info in the Bible and one Book under the Name Mary Magdalene along with some other apogripha books paint somewhat the picture of "Redemption" and "Tolerance"... this is coalescent in Mary Magdalene's ****, she was a follower of Christ an apostol... but even more important to her character... "She was a prostitute" this is essential for her Arch as a character in the Bible... she was about to be Stoned to Death and Jesus intervine to save her asking "He who is clean of sin Throw the First stone" also he added "I have come for the sinners"... so she being a prostitute and then becoming an apostol fighting for a cause beyond her mundane life and Jesus stating that the kingdom of God is for everyone and all are capable of redemption...this is Crucial in the short story of Mary Magdalene in the Bible... coming from the worst place to a **** the leader fighting for the lowest... and this movie..."completely ignored this part of the story" the "Story!!!"...there is no story without this.... this is takes away 2 essential premises from both Mary and Jesus as characters... the Teacher willing to die for all and believer of redemption and Magdalene able to pull herself out from the dark and into a higher purpose... without this we are seeing a movie called Mary **** this is not her...this is **** from there the points falls flat... we end up watching some fiction.... to be honest there is not that many interpretations from **** this is really a waste... they could have bring her story to the big screen...instead we watched Fantasy fiction labeled as Something that it is not... lots not even talk about "painting Peter as a Black actor"...listen this was low... like can we take a famous head of a church...like Buddha and make him black, take Kukulcan and make him black...like please ****?
