What truly makes Liar Liar work, however, is Shadyac's inspired sense of comic proportion. While torquing the hilarities to the max, he never loses sight of the story's important human side. His blend of farce with heart is perfect.

It's worth hanging on for the spice of the closing credit outtakes, which effectively rounds off a reliably entertaining slice of comic nonsense.

We can always count on Jim Carrey to give us a classic. Absolutely hilarious and also has a good moral message to it.

Another one of my all time favorites. He should have made a part two to this. I crack up still watching this movie. It's forever funny.

Jim Carrey entertains himself mightily in Liar Liar, and his enthusiasm is infectious.

Awfully funny at times.

This film is both too formulaic and too much a one-man vehicle to rate as a true masterpiece. But God strike me dead if I'm lying, this is one gut-busting funny movie.

Once Fletcher starts telling the truth against his will, the movie delivers some perfect laughs.

A sickly soft-swirl confection of low laughs and smarmy sentiment.

Liar Liar is a perfect movie that fit's Jim Carrey in his typically goofy roles and this one is **** good.

Fletcher Reede is a competent lawyer who has learned that lying is easier and more rewarding than telling the truth. This will change when his son decides to ask as a birthday wish that Dad spend at least a full day without being able to lie. A day that will change Reede's life. Or at least that was the intention of Jim Carrey in this deeply beautiful and touching film, where the laughter mingles with the beauty of the love shown by a father who truly wants to regain his family. The script, by telling a morally edifying story in an effective way, can therefore be considered as one of the strongest points of this film. Jim Carrey has achieved here one of his most important successes. With it, he became a consecrated comedian. His performance is truly colossal, there isn't a moment where he doesn't shine, completely overshadowing the rest of the cast, with the honorable exception of Justin Cooper, who gives life to the sweet and innocent son of the lawyer. Some of the scenes involving Reede and Max are worthy of humorous anthologies. Personally, I consider this film as the consecration of Jim Carrey, rather than the most famous and popular "Bruce Allmighty", who came a little after. The story is very simple but beautiful, the cast work was very competent, the direction of Tom Shadyac worked well... basically everything was up to the project. It's not an exceptional film, it's not a timeless work of art. It's a film for familiar entertainment, to see and to laugh. If viewed in this light, it's an excellent film.

This lighthearted comedy could've been so much more. It was painfully cliché, the acting wasn't that good except for Carrey and the movie was way too predictable. It wasn't a ad movie, it was just a disappointing one.

Fletcher Reede, a scummy lawyer and unreliable father, catches a dose of humility when his young son uses a birthday wish to momentarily halt his fibbing ways. Thanks to a mystical plot device, dad can’t tell a lie for twenty-four hours, which is bad timing as he already has a lucrative court date on the books and his estranged wife is entertaining the idea of taking the kid and leaving town. Selfish though he may be, Reede does love the little tyke and would be heartbroken to fade out of his life. The practical rules of this curse are a little hazy. Not only must the victim speak with complete honesty, he also can’t shut up or control his most basic physical urges. Any time somebody asks a question, usually of the transparent setup variety, Fletcher spits a frank opinion and then goggles, bashfully, like a misbehaving child who’s about to catch the rod. Though obnoxious, this blunt mechanic works to emphasize the film’s only major strength: an adlib-happy Jim Carrey in the prime of his comedic career. Or maybe just a hair past his prime. Either way, Liar Liar serves as an effective vehicle for Carrey’s unique brand of contortionist charisma and far over-the-top vocalizations. These alone elevate a thin comedy, which would’ve otherwise made for bargain basement straight-to-video fodder, into something a few steps higher. Good enough to draw nine digits at the box office, anyway. So it’s Carrey as the magnetically overbearing sort, a role he’d already played countless times but hadn’t totally worn out, trying to make things right with a cute youngster while wearing an expensive suit. Cary Elwes is here, too, but he gets very little to work with as the stiff nice guy trying to make a move on the ex. Not great, but also not a complete waste of time.

Couldn't get through the movie. Jim's character is insufferable. Immensely annoying. This was insanely hard to watch. I made it as far as I could but ultimately it just wasn't gonna happen. If you don't mind obnoxious characters then maybe you'd be able to make it further than I did. Top 3 worst movies I've ever seen considering the fact that I never chuckled ONCE. Movies like this make me glad to be in a new era of film.
