If In the Cut falls short of the masterpiece Campion intended, it's unquestionably the most ambitious and important film to come along in months.

The best (which also means the sexiest) Campion feature since "The Piano," featuring Meg Ryan's best performance to date and an impressive one by Mark Ruffalo.
60
A disjointed, sometimes fascinating mélange of moods, associations and effects.
50
A disappointing erotic thriller from director Jane Campion that amounts to an implausible update on "Looking for Mr. Goodbar."

Campion and company may like to think they've made something provocative, moody and new but it's really just "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" with extra nuts.
37
Campion has made something that's almost unbearably pretentious.

Ryan radiates neither desire nor terror. She's freeze-dried in a world of lifelessly abstract feminine fear, and so is the movie.

From the director who is likely to bag the Oscar for best director this year, In The Cut is a disappointing thriller with a feminist angle that is constantly weakened by the lack of a more involving pace and especially by not having a better lead. In The Cut is a dark and penetrating film, certainly more erotic than thrilling, but Meg Ryan was a poor casting choice.
She's unable to sell the character. Her performance doesn't feel natural, but forced. The film is not mediocre, but shallow. A lot of the themes it handles are quite good, but Jane Campion fails to explore them properly.
They are scattered points in the narrative without a more practical coherence. To see her best thrillers, which I think she did with what she learned in this film, better watch the two seasons of Top of The Lake.

In The Cut is one of those movie that there is a very good thing in it, then slowly getting really bad and it just make me don't care anymore.
