Rolling Stone
The boldness of director Danny DeVito's violent epic is matched by Nicholson's astonishing physical and vocal transformation into Jimmy Hoffa.

The New York Times
Hoffa is an original work of fiction, based on fact, conceived with imagination and a consistent point of view.

San Francisco Chronicle
If Hoffa is supposed to be an intimate portrait of the labor leader, it never gets much beyond painting a murky picture of a one-note Johnny who seems more like a stock Jack Nicholson character. [25 Dec 1992]

Boston Globe
For all the care and craftsmanship that have gone into Hoffa, it's a superficial film. [25 Dec 1992]

TV Guide Magazine
Despite Jack Nicholson's galvanizing portrayal, Hoffa is a cold, remote, neo-religious pageant.

Baltimore Sun
The movie is a corpse. It's a fish that stinks from the head. They ought to bury it in the Jersey Meadowlands. [25 Dec 1992]

Washington Post
Hoffa is the emptiest prestige picture of the year.

I much prefer 1992's Hoffa over The Irishman. Jack Nicholson's absolutely brilliant and the tale is way more core and gritty over 2019's The Irishman.

So far this is the most serious film I've seen from Danny DeVito as a director. But what struck me as a bit odd despite Jack Nicholson's more than solid performance as Jimmy Hoffa, is that DeVito who also stars in this film, is that he gave himself the most important weight in the story because the way we see Hoffa is through his character. Sure, we see what Nicholson does with the character through his performance, but the concept of the film is more about what DeVito's character plays himself in the plot, which creates a barrier between what you might personally interpret about Hoffa, especially if you know who he was, and what the film idealizes about him. It's worth seeing for the performances, especially Nicholson's. The rest is pretty middling.

He was capable of anything. He wasn't afraid of anyone. That's why everyone was afraid of him. He didn't want law, he wanted justice.
