SummaryOver seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears. Townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity. [MUBI]

Harvest is a film about capitalism, at first quietly and then like a blunt object to the skull. Simmering beneath that ultimate disruption, though, is a sense of communal collapse that is already creeping under everything.

Tsangari’s vigorous, yeasty period piece occasionally loses the thread of its sprawling ensemble narrative, but transfixes as a whole-sackcloth immersion into another time and place.

Harvest stands strong and tall, a work solid as an oak. Full of a sensual love of nature and a distinctive vibe, it’s tangy like a home-brewed ale.

Saying that it makes these concepts “fun” or “accessible” is an overstatement, as “Harvest” can feel interminable even when a viewer is engaged with its ideas. But it does bring them to vivid, even bawdy, life.

The film is a handsomely mounted production in which much of the filth feels stage-managed.

Tsangari’s view of her world is blocked by her ideas; she is so concerned with what she has to say that she doesn’t see what she’s not showing.

The ploddingly unvaried pace and undirected, underpowered performances make this an exasperating experience: a directionless, shallow movie which seems bafflingly unconvincing and inauthentic at every turn.

Capitalism shows its fangs in ‘Harvest,’ by Athina Rachel Tsangari, based on the novel of the same name, by Jim Crace. The progress that this economic model promised/promises wreaks havoc in a small village with no defined name or time. Paranoia, suspicion, and, eventually, anger take hold of some villagers whose existence is endangered after the harsh and not very yearable for them impositions of a merciless lord. With her new work, the Greek filmmaker examines the chaos resulting from the clash of two systems, in which, of course, those at the bottom are the ones who lose. Maintaining a deeply mysterious and almost profane tone, the film collects certain elements of folk horror to show the systematic disintegration of an entire community.
