Direction by George Cukor is ever a display of fine craftsmanship. He utilizes small mosaics of sharp characterization in building to his climax and works in each facet faultlessly. This is the job for which Cukor admirers have been waiting.

Gaslight is an iconic noir detective film. A great example of how a film can be a detective, a family drama, and a thriller. And it's all in the noir genre. It is difficult to imagine that modern cinema is able to repeat this with the same level. That's the value of Gaslight. It's rare for a film to have such an impact that its name becomes a household name. Ingrid Bergman's chic acting, even after 70 years, can be admired. Victorian is also well-conveyed, even the black and white shooting didn't stop it. Of course, it is transmitted more through the interiors of the heroes' house and costumes.

Es una película bastante interesante ya que, por parte del antagonista, todo está muy bien pensado. Desde el principio, con acciones que a priori parecen inofensivas, se van sumando, lo que provoca que incluso la protagonista sienta que pierde sus facultades mentales. Algo que no me gusta es que el amor que se demuestran sucede muy rápido, por lo que es algo inverosímil. Y otra cosa que sucede y que es bastante imperdonable es con las joyas que se buscan; hay formas mucho más sencillas y menos caóticas para lograrlas: enviarla de viaje por unos días, dejarla que salga y que vaya a fiestas son cosas bastante naturales y que le ayudarían a conseguir su objetivo. Por lo que, aunque bien armados, los sucesos son algo rebuscados. Aun así, es una gran película.

Gaslight is an expertly directed and evenly paced slow burn (and Dame May Whitty is a stitch, though underused, as a nosy neighbor lady), but its lack of a sound moral and psychological center renders it totally transitory and forgettable.
