From the careful casting of Navajo actors — vital not only to representation but when it comes to speaking the language — to its honest look into rez life without any Hollywood spin, Frybread Face and Me isn't just a joy to watch but spells a bright future for Luther after this narrative feature debut.

If you have been fiending all year for a quality drama that shares a different world, then Frybread Face and Me is what you have been waiting for. Luther’s deft screenplay ably gets across a lot of complicated family business in just a few strokes.

I loved being able feel the lives of these characters. Based on the filmmaker’s life experiences. Authentic. Raw. Touching.

Luther, who identifies as gay, never explicitly assigns labels to these young characters, which makes perfect sense in a story that openly embraces freedom and tenderness. Here’s hoping for many more films from this sensitive, nuanced talent.

Pickles in a bag, runaway sheep, dusty roads, the same movie over and over until the tape wears out—these are the sense memories that remind the filmmaker who he is and where he comes from. To share it with the world in this way is an act of profound generosity and love.

It’s 1990 and a summer that initially smacks of exile and punishment becomes one of discovery — self-discovery to be sure, but also cultural and familial.

The movie is overfamiliar and earnest, but you can’t accuse it of not being heartfelt.

The film is playing with familiar tropes along a formulaic path, but it’s simply too endearing to dismiss outright.

Frybread Face & Me is a wonderful film full of heartwarming moments and rich with cultural appreciation and honor for the Navajo family and traditions. It was funny, and it had touching moments of depth and beauty - bringing one to a place of what the Dinè lovingly call "Hozho." Benny's immersion into Rez life and the stark difference between living in San Diego and his visit with his grandmother provide an interesting viewpoint into modern Natives and the many struggles they face between life outside of the Res, and preservation and survival when living in the desert. I thought the way the movie moved forward to show the many facets of each family member and even the baby's first laugh ceremony was the most precious scenes that depicted a sacred celebration of a beautiful first for a baby. I loved this movie, and while it did bring some tears to my eyes here and there the overall message of the story made it entirely worthwhile.

Short, sweet, and touching. The aunt and the uncle were great with the little they were given to portray. Kids were wonderful, and of course grandma.

A good movie and gives a taste of life on a reservation. It's funny and endearing too!
