If Larry Fishburne is like a Clint Eastwood who can act better, the new film is like a Dirty Harry movie done right. [17 Apr 1992, p.20]

A gripping, often raw, action thriller.

An incredibly underrated 90s undercover cop drama that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as classics like Donnie Brasco. The story is fantastic, anchored by a phenomenal lead performance from Laurence Fishburne and a wonderfully eccentric turn by Jeff Goldblum. The action is sharp, the dialogue is memorable, and the breakneck screenplay keeps you hooked from the start. However, the film struggles a bit with its ending, which pivots into a cynical political statement rather than a satisfying resolution to the main plot. Additionally, some of the emotional subplots could have had a stronger, more lingering impact on the main character. Despite these minor narrative flaws, it is a great, atmospheric watch.

Deep Cover is a stylish, well shot unpredictable crime thriller. Jeff and Laurence give first rate performances. The results are gritty, original & very clever. One of the best movies of the 90's.

The co-writer and producer, Henry Bean (Internal Affairs), and the director, Bill Duke (A Rage in Harlem), punch up the story with plenty of action, some of it gratuitous and illogical. But for the most part they stick close to Fishburne's character and his increasingly difficult choices. [15 Apr 1992, p.D6]

DEEP COVER has a shaky beginning and a hokey ending but, somewhere in between, it becomes a movie of considerable power--largely thanks to the contrasting styles of its two stars.

Despite moments of ludicrous contrivance, the script offers an often-engrossing study of a lone wolf ensnared by both good and evil. It gives Fishburne (Boys N the Hood) the chance to bring his thoughtful presence to a leading role. And it gives Duke a chance to display his burgeoning skill. [16 Apr 1992, p.F5]

Convoluted and mostly unconvincing as a portrait of the drug underworld, Deep Cover [based on a story by Michael Tolkin] still carries some resonance due to its vivid portrait of societal decay and a heavyweight performance by Larry Fishburne.

Deep Cover eventually degenerates into so much gratuitous violence that "kill" sounds like the most-used verb in the screenplay's last stages. The screenplay's frequent emphasis on homophobic insults is another unfortunate touch.

A stylish noir-ish crime drama. Great performances from all the cast but especially Fishburne who has real glower power. The material is pretty dark, set in the LA drug world, against a backdrop of a Iran-Contra style geopolitical scandal. Some of the camera work and use of lighting is really very inventive and suits the tone of the scenes nicely. A feast for the eyes.
