Through its complex structure, formed of different timelines and split realities, uncanny dreams and blurred memories, “Alpha” viscerally teases out the binds of love and trauma.

Mind you, everyone here is suffering. That overbearing mass of existential angst almost certainly contributes to the many negative responses, but few will endure its attack without admitting they’ve sat through something out of the ordinary.

Alpha (2025) Ghost from the Past (12,477 – 29 May 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In France, the 13-year-old Alpha (Mélissa Boros) drinks too much in a party and someone tattoos the letter A on her shoulder. Her mother (Golshifteh Farahani), who is a medical doctor, becomes scared and takes Alpha to the hospital for blood exams. At the same time, her brother Amin (Tahar Rahim), who is an infected drug addict visits them and stays in Alpha’s room. “Alpha” 2025 is a complex drama by Julia Ducournau and the viewer that is not her follower will need to read to understand the layers of this film. The plot point is when the viewer sees that Uncle Amin is dead. There are several metaphors like the infection with AIDS and the rejection by people; the return of Amin means the recollection from the past with the possibility of Alpha’s infection; the letter “A” refer to the Scarlet Letter; the red wind turning Amin into sand is when Alpha and her mother finally let him go and also to the devil mentioned by grandmother. The acting is top-notch. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): “Alpha” My Blog: ****/

Ducournau’s “Raw” & “Titane” were a kick, a thrill, and created the kind of movie buzz that lasts for days and made you want to tell everyone about them. Her 3rd film is a funeral dirge as it toggles between drab social realist melodrama & dreamtime surrealism. It’s super grim. Glad I was able to see it in a cinema (I was the only customer), it’s a singular feature, but I couldn’t recommend it to anyone. (UPDATE: the film unlocked some vivid, troubling dreams, which hasn’t happened in a very long time, so there’s that.).

As Alpha’s family becomes increasingly isolated, the film’s ambition widens. Though the rhythms of this can take some getting used to, the resulting emotional payoff is more than worth your patience.

It doesn’t hit the heights of Raw and Titane, but strong performances and the moving familial drama mean Julia Ducournau’s third feature is still an impactful watch.

It can impress with its utter originality and technical know-how, but there’s so much going on for so long that many viewers will be exhausted by the midway point, if not earlier.

It’s painful to watch such talents pour so much into roles that are fairly common, if not clichéd by American indie standards.

The madly, bafflingly overwrought and humourless storytelling can’t overcome the fact that everything here is frankly unpersuasive and tedious. Every line, every scene, has the emoting dial turned up to 11 and yet feels redundant.

I understand the AIDS metaphor, but the movie seemed all over the place everywhere else. This is best shown in the ending because there is so much thrown at you and you're left thinking, "wtf?'.

‘Alpha’ appears to be the beginning of a new stage for Julia Ducournau’s career, seemingly abandoning the sordid for a more “serious” approach. And this is precisely what reveals itself as the Achilles' heel of her failed third feature film: a drama about clinging to saving someone who doesn't want to be saved, wrapped in pretentious packaging and delivered with an insecurity that soon infects the entire film. An erratic, exhausting, and ultimately dead-on-arrival movie that relies on obvious metaphors and repetitions that lead nowhere. Such a shame for the actors, who deliver fine and sometimes raw performances. You can hate ‘Titane’ or even ‘Raw,’ but at least those have an unserious touch that makes them enjoyable or interesting. This is just excruciating; your patience will be tested early on.
