Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis is a deeply unconventional rhythm game that fuses denpa-inspired psychological storytelling with a meme-heavy, chaotic soundtrack and a deceptively simple gameplay loop. While its four-lane mechanics are accessible, the real draw lies in its unsettling tonal shifts, meta-narrative elements, and the disturbing yet compelling relationship between Qtie and her imagined savior Yunyun. It is not a pure rhythm experience nor a fully story-driven game, but rather an experimental hybrid that rewards players who embrace its strangeness and emotional dissonance.

Despite some pacing issues and excessive repetition, YunYun Syndrome: Rhythm Psychosis is an incredibly fun experience with a full self-awareness of the slightly deeper layers of the otaku sphere it both represents and engages with.

Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis is a chaotic and compelling rhythm game built around denpa culture, mixing catchy tracks with a satirical story about an isolated, terminally online teen addicted to conspiratorial shitposting. It’s weird, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful though repetitive gameplay and progression hiccups produce a bit of cringe.

What if you mixed a rhythm game with a psychological thriller? That's what WHO YOU, in collaboration with Alliance Arts, presents in their latest game, Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis. In this game, you take control of a hikikomori—for those unfamiliar with the term, hikikomori are people who live in extreme levels of social isolation and confinement to their homes. But will it be any good? Will it only cover the basics?

I gave up on the game thanks to the terrible translation to english. Sad, but the localization team made the game unbearable.

Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis is one of those games that thrives on contradiction. It’s simple but chaotic, forgiving yet overwhelming, structured yet constantly slipping into uncertainty. It doesn’t aim for mechanical perfection, nor does it try to be a pure rhythm skill test. Instead, it builds an experience where rhythm gameplay, narrative descent, and sensory overload all feed into each other. The forgiving mechanics dilute mastery for some players, and the audio design occasionally clashes with itself in ways that feel more noisy than intentional. These aren’t dealbreakers, but they do keep it from reaching that higher tier of refinement. Still, what it does well, it commits to fully, and that commitment is what makes it stick.

This is all to say that Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis is a great rhythm game that I keep coming back to, and its story is really interesting due to its two main characters and how the internet-centric aesthetic brings everything together. The psychological elements make the denpa subgenre more understandable to players who might not be too familiar with it, as I’ve discovered while playing through the game. If you’ve played rhythm games before and need something new to play, it’s hard to go wrong with Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis. The game respects your time too, so there’s also that for those not wanting a massive time sink in their backlogs.

Rhythm Psychosis is a heck of an experience that, depending on how much you know about this stuff going in, can be a window into an unfamiliar world, a push down a rabbit hole you had no previous plans to enter. And that’s fascinating, and a cool central theme to wrap a whole music game around. Combine that with some brilliant localization for what had to be some mind-boggling source material, an admittedly strange but catchy soundtrack, solid enough rhythm gameplay (think DJMAX but a bit simpler), and some storytelling chops unafraid to tackle dark material in an empathetic way, and you have a deranged feast of a game to sift through. That said, having to grind out levels far beyond what the tracklist can reasonably support just to finish the story is criminal. Yunyun Syndrome’s momentum plunges off a cliff about halfway through, and that’s a real shame considering how much energy it has out of the gate. I feel like I’ve wasted hours of my life on this game despite loving it at first, and that’s a sense of conflict I wish I didn’t have to contend with.
