I played three hours of Silent Hill: Townfall, and I’m certain of this: the Silent Hill series is having an evolutionary moment. [3-Hour Hands-On Impressions]

What really sets Townfall apart, however, is its change in perspective to first person. [4-Hour Hands-On Impressions]

Few games deliver that foreboding, lingering dread quite like a good Silent Hill, and it seems like developer Screen Burn has understood the assignment. [3-Hour Hands-On Impressions]

There's some delicious sleight of hand at play here between what we're being told and what, I think, Townfall will actually turn out to be. [4-Hour Hands-On Impressions]

Silent Hill: Townfall already feels like the most interesting risk Konami has taken in this revival era. The first-person shift works, the CRTV is a great hook, and the mystery around Simon and the town had me theorizing a little too much after my hands-on time was over. [Hands-On Impressions]

We've got puzzles, freaky fleshy enemies, and a pretty neat little portable TV. [Hands-On Impressions]

mong the biggest is that the game has shifted to a first-person perspective, creating a more immersive, horror-filled atmosphere. It also adds to the game's map mechanic, which involves Simon pulling out a foldable pamphlet and unfolding it in front of his face to look at the town's layout. To further convey the cinematic horror atmosphere, cutscenes will be presented in CinemaScope letterbox (2.35:1), with the option to extend that presentation to gameplay as well. These additions bring a greater sense of dread to Townfall, as does the use of a dynamic soundtrack. If a monster gets too close, the audio will swell up, prompting the player to run or find a hiding place. [Hands-On Impressions]

I hope that Silent Hill: Townfall’s combat, exploration, and puzzle mechanics continue to evolve in unexpected ways, giving players more tools and continuing to present novel scenarios. It’s not so much that I don’t think Townfall will manage to accomplish these goals, but more so that I can’t predict how it will go about it. Depending on how you look at it, I suppose that could be a good thing. [3-Hour Hands-On Impressions]

Like Silent Hill f, Townfall marks a geographic departure for the series, which has typically situated its hometown in small burgs in the eastern US. Townfall does a remarkable job of capturing the atmosphere of a small Scottish town, from the omnipresent damp of the air to the thick rubbery paint that aims to prevent it from seeping into the stone and stucco walls of the terraced houses.
