fool me once: how could you?
fool me twice: I'm mad!
fool me a third time: you are officially that guy
and Sid Meier is officially that guy
an addicting game, humorous graphics
and yet it's not enjoyable one bit
you are not playing a game - you are playing a slot machine
disguised as a game
if that is your thing you will enjoy this
otherwise don't bother
diplomacy is useless, all the AI does is take over every unoccupied tile on the map even if it is worthless, you cannot have early transport ships and every siege weapon is utterly useless
this is random number generator the game - and the dice is weighted in the computer players favor
the best civ game you will play, an addactive experience but devoid of fun

Sid Meier's Civilization III, and all the remain franchise games, are all that a turn-based strategy game should be. For me, as a fan, they are a reference to the genre. I played a lot more than Steam registered because I played before Steam, a physical copy that I bought in 2001 when the game was released. Old ages, physical copies, games in CD, no one remember them... But now, in 2018 I replayed it, and without noticing the passing time I almost played 10 hours in a row. I still loved it. Of course the CiV V is for me the pinnacle of the franchise, but for the 2001 game, it is still better them some other games of the genre. I get a few resolution issues but nothing serious for a game of this age, totally understandable. Fully recommend it, it's a classic for a bargain price, a "must have" to any Steam collection.

Hearing good things about this, I tried it in 2010 without having the nostalgic sense around it. I enjoyed it, the learning curve was interesting and I wanted to know how good I could get at it. Some great features stood out, I even played it with a friend on LAN for awhile. But it being so dated, and lacking modern user-friendly polish that so many devlopment teams easily manage nowdays, it regretfully doesn't stand up to modern games. I would give this one a miss, unless you love RTS turn based games or lost your original disks, since it's cheap.
