There's little doubting the charm. [Issue#78, p.101]
Rock of Ages is a novel idea and one that has some potential, but it feels like the balance between offense can defense in the game just isn't quite right.

The weird game you question yourself for buying, but never are able to put down once you play it. That's how to describe Rock of Ages. Although it may seem odd, this game really is fun! The action of rolling your boulder down roads throughout many time periods, each complete with art styles suited for the eras they represent, is terrific. Almost as funny as the levels are fun, the opening scenes to each level are great and I enjoyed every one of them. The defensive play stands out as a challenge to me. It takes some good placement and the right objects to really stop your enemy. SkeeBoulder is also nice, helping mix things up a little and keep it fresh. If you're looking for something different, Rock of Ages is definitely the way to go.

Unique, creative, humorous, innovative, charming, and fun. All this of course means cynical reviewers won't like it for the most part. They need advertising dollars and exclusives to give it a good score. Gamers who enjoy playing games will love it.

Like Trenched before it, Rock of Ages offers a fresh, action-oriented twist on the tower defense genre, along with a welcome, zany aesthetic. It's a curiosity, for sure, but if you enjoy the offbeat, you cannot go wrong here. Hats off to Atlus yet again for bringing something new and interesting to the table.

A lot of people out there calling themselves gamers like to cry about there not being enough creativity in the land of game development. Well Ace Team sets out to prove them wrong. They may have only released two games, Rock of Ages and Zeno Clash, but both of these titles try to do bold things with games both in the art style and interesting gameplay developments. In the least give the demo for this one a whirl. Hopefully it'll grown on you as quickly as it grew on us!

This is probably the most innovative game you'll play all year. Its a combination of tower defense, bowling and driving, and when you add multiplayer into that combination you get a great game with tons of replay value. Oh, and don't forget the Monty Python-style humor, this game is hilarious. The games often come down to a difference of a few seconds, which most of the reviewers here don't seem to understand. You're supposed to spend the majority of your focus on the offense, but if your defense can slow them down by even a few seconds that can be the difference in the game. The only issues I had with the game was the controls. In general they were fine, but placing units could be a little difficult with the analog stick. This wasn't a big deal though, and it was still workable. Overall, Rock of Ages is a great game with an innovative concept, and for $10 it's totally worth it.

Simple in design, but almost to a fault. The tower defense mechanics just don't work as well as we had hoped, but we did enjoy crushing hundreds of buildings and townsfolk with our rolling rock of doom. Oh, and steamrolling your friends so hard that they cry themselves to sleep? That's pretty neat, too.

The ideas behind the game are great, but the execution is a bit disappointing.

The humour and colourful designs are reference-heavy and genuinely quite charming but can only distract so much from what is essentially the same level repeated over and over. [Nov 2011, p.119]

Totally funny! Interesting Ages, nice art style. Crude humor and very entertaining. I would buy that game again every single day. Even again, a very original game. Please, I want more of that.

You will have fun with this game, guaranteed! The introduction clips to each level are hilarious, the action is frantic, and the game play is addicting. If you have kids, it's a great way to push the curiosity to find out about the art style and moment in history of each level (although the relevance of the "historic" characters chosen is questionable in many cases). The defense system is a bit off, though, but if you can master it, it will become relevant in some matches. If you are one of those gamers who have been complaining about lack of originality in games lately, you have to check this one out!
