Guns of the Patriots is almost intimidating in the consistent quality of its ideas, invention, and execution...Even by the series' stratospheric standards, MGS4 is a remarkable high point. [June 2008]

If you've ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you've loved them all, well then there'll be many, many more. It’s a masterpiece.

Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it.

The fourth chapter of the classic series continues Kojima's vision. metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is part of the best years for gaming (2007-2013) and is memorable like the first 3.

Absolute masterpiece, and the ending would make any grown man cry. A beautiful end to Solid Snake's journey.

First and one of the only MSG's i've played, never got into these games, most of these games are slow burns and its 30 hours of it. This one was just brilliant, the heavy weight of a espionage veteran slowly dying, the weapon customization, the endings of several bosses, and the combat settings are fun as hell.

There are errors and flaws that can be pointed. Thing is, no other game manages to awaken such a diverse stream of feelings in its length. It generates hate, pity and even manages to makes us reconsider what we recognise as the current world, in its unbarred race to armament and technology. This is, at the moment, the interactive digital entertainment high point, setting the bar for originality and overall quality.

To review such a game as Metal Gear Solid 4 is like commissioning a blind man to share his opinion on a beautiful oil painting painted by a true artist, it just wouldn’t work. The nature of Metal Gear Solid 4 lifts it above such conventional ways of judgement.

As the crowning achievement of the series' 20-year history, Hideo Kojima's final Metal Gear Solid title may not be what you expect, but it is everything you could hope for in a video game.

A gaming masterpiece that provides an experience unlike any other.

Hours of concentrated narrative abuse can't obscure or dilute the detailed game within.

Now, on the PS3, Metal Gear has regained some, not all, of its former glory. But weak, reused bosses, a broken online game and the gameplay to video ratio keep it from the lofty standards that Metal Gear Solid set up so many years ago.

While Guns of the Patriots boasts lashings of in-game invention and creativity that's largely wrapped up in superb style and execution, it's all so unforgivably tainted by jaw-dropping gameplay brevity that it's truly difficult to raise the many, many good points above what is, for the most part, a succession of cut scenes that leave the player with an overwhelming sense of disconnection from one of gaming's most compelling characters and interactive franchises.

Revisited this game in 2022. I bought it on day 1 but only played it these days. As an MGS fan I think a lot of its value comes from nostalgia. I appreciated that, but a person who is not that familiar may not enjoy it. Storywise it was good, I enjoyed understanding BB history and the characters are fun. The story like some others MGS is about the future wars and soldiers. It will surely attract SiFi fans but others not so sure. Like other MGS there are two ways to play MGS , the pro sneaking stealth way and the casual friendly just kill everything with your guns, Drebin make the casual gameplay more accessible. I can say that I liked the game more before shadowmosses. Once I reached Shadowmoses it felt like the devs had to rush everything and it lost little of its fun. I will rank it as my least favorite MGS game, MGS2 being the most favorite.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is all of the worst elements of Hideo Kojima wrapped up in one miserable package. When MGS4 actually allows you to press buttons, you're given the same quality Metal Gear gameplay you'd expect. Unfortunately, this is few and far between, as MGS4 is basically a movie where gameplay occasionally interrupts your viewing experience. If the story of MGS4 was up to par with the previous games in the series, this wouldn't be quite as painful. However, any meaningful commentary about the nature of war is sidelined by a character-driven story so cheesy and poorly written that it wouldn't pass for a daytime soap opera. Furthermore, you will often play for only minutes before being forced to endure an hour or so of non-stop boring exposition dumps. Metal Gear Solid 4 is simply one of the most overrated "games" ever made, and is a shining example of what happens when a creator's ego is inflated to an underserved level, and that ego goes completely unchecked.

Kojima failed with this title, which completely lacks rhythm due to the constant cutscenes, messages, and codecs that repeatedly break the flow **** that also features shallow and uninspired gameplay. Undoubtedly, the lowest point in the entire series. My score: **
SummaryMetal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots features an aging and exhausted Solid Snake in the middle of a futuristic battlefield. In spite of his failing body, Snake is equipped with a crucial new device tentatively known as "OctoCamo," a high-tech suit that dynamically transforms its texture based on Snake's surroundings.
