It may just be nostalgia, but for its price, Mercenary Kings Reloaded feels like a perfectly fair package.

Mercenary Kings is a modern classic run 'n' gun game and this Reloaded Edition will hopefully allow more gamers to experience its multiplayer mission-based mayhem. Tribute Games lives up to their name yet again.

The game can be challenging. I am hooked though. Mostly finding the material I need to craft new equipment. The missions tend to be the just there for me to get new gear. Some of the missions do sometimes need another player(s). That is where I take two points off. When adding a second player in local it does not split the screen or share. It splits the screen into four boxes. Making the sprites really small and hard to see in Coop. In online multiplayer this is not an issue.

A fun retro-style side-scrolling shooter. Action is good, plenty of missions to complete either solo or co-op with up to 4 players, and crafting different guns with all sorts of properties keeps the game fresh. Game has a great soundtrack. However, the repeated usage of same bosses can get obnoxious as you see same basic bosses again, again, again and again. Even same locations are repeated countless times with different objectives. Performance is questionable for Nintendo Switch Lite, version I played. I don't know how this game plays on regular Switch, but with Switch Lite there is random stuttering which can screw your game big time if you are in combat with enemies and bosses. Also, character sprites can bug out at random and show you something seizure inducing. Music also isn't safe from bugs. As you are in the main camp and interact with merchants, when you enter menus the music can die at random so you are left with awkward silence when moving around the hub.

A 2D action game with a frantic rhythm and a very striking and well-done visual aspect. It proposes many missions and possibilities but they get diluted over time after repeating the same stages and mechanics again and again. The multiplayer mode makes this shooting game's fun last longer by letting us play in co-op mode locally and online.

The content is not at fault, nor is the level design and replay value. This one’s a blast to play with friends, and that may be its most saving grace. The sluggishness of movement and shooting is halved when you’re playing with a good friend who can share in the mayhem. It also allows online play with friends, strangers, or by invite only so you can tailor your desired experience. Playing solo is doable, but MKR is a whole lot more fun when it’s played with friends.

I hope Tribute Games keeps doing their thing until the end of time, but this run-and-gun just didn't do it for me. [Issue #33 – May/June 2018, p. 19]

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded takes some serious steps to breathe new life into the gun-toting, fast-paced arcade shooter, resetting your expectations by adding RPG elements such as weapon crafting and loot drops into the mix. It's ambitious, but also sorely repetitious, lacking in mission variety and the kind of enemy AI needed to make the grind feel worthwhile. Blending genres has created a kind of mediocre middle ground, with the only truly exceptional aspect of the game being it's fantastic visual style. The vivid, gorgeous pixel art elevates the experience, as does the ability to jump into local or online co-op with ease, so if you're looking to temporarily swap your Bowgun for an AK-47, then this is definitely still worth a look.

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition adds two new characters and expands the weapon building but the missions are not balanced for an enjoyable single-player experience. The amazing sprite art and animation is the real star here, but sadly not so much the gameplay. The co-operative mode is definitely how Mercenary Kings was intended to be experienced. The visuals and characters just barely keep this engaging enough to keep people playing solo.

This game appearance is deceiving. By looking at the screenshots you expected fun fast-paced action, with cool missions and bosses.
- it’s not fun - missions is automatically generated bs like kill 2 foxes, get 2 iron(yes this game have “resource gathering”
- it’s slow. Character moves like they under water
-maps seems like also autogenerated, and you frequently walk around trying to find your goal. The overall gameplay is like bad mmo, where all the fun part was cut out from the game. But meaningless quests, and resource gathering are kept there.
