It really is like taking a step back in time and discovering a classic game that you never played, yet has been updated graphically and influenced by more recent games.

A definite case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. If you never played this style game before, subtract a point for how dated the whole thing will feel. If you're a fan of this style of RPG, add a point for the memories it will bring back.

This game could have been so much better if it would have been for the DS. The limitations of this game are most likely caused by the sheer limitations of the GBA.

Mazes of Fate is a classic example of a lovingly crafted yet off-beat GBA title – it might smell a bit iffy but the gameplay can be truly intoxicating.

The story is great, the dungeons and interface are laid out well, the enemy selection is good and the action is pretty entertaining. However, the presentation found within is very 1991, so be prepared to make friends with a game that's certainly not the new kid on the block.

Mazes of Fate isn't the most technically impressive GBA game, and its shortcomings are more glaring this late in the handheld's life, but the gameplay is as solid old-school RPG as you can get.

If you're a fan of old-school dungeon crawlers, you're definitely going to like Mazes of Fate. It's a decent game, and while not for everyone, it can provide hours of entertainment for the open-minded gamer.

Mazes of Fate has a great premise and some interesting ideas, but it never leaves the trappings of the old-school dungeon crawlers it's based on.

It's a game built for the fans that grew up playing classic games on early computers. For many gamers it may be a title their father will find more interesting than they do.

Despite some good aspects, I can't recommend Mazes of Fate unless you're willing to tolerate a half-decent game for 20 hours.
