Some of the most disappointing games to play are those that have brilliant ideas, and even pull a few of them off, but can’t maintain quality across the board. Horizon is an extreme example of that category, where a quarter of it is some of the cleverest design turn-based space strategy has seen in years, half of it is fine, and the last quarter is virtually unplayable.

Horizon has its heart in the right place, but doesn’t bring enough to the table to be a stand out. While you can get lost in the game for hours without realizing it, sloppy interface controls, a just plain awful combat system and dated graphics are all making sure that you don’t get as much fun as you could be getting from game time.

Horizon is an interesting 4X strategy game with good ideas but without a great execution. Its tactical combat and irregular interface are their major faults.

Potentially a great game, Horizon lacks of the necessary polishing to maintain its promises.

There are certainly enjoyable features and it’s nice to have someone attempting innovation but a few things fall flat while others struggle to shine. It’s a pity not everything succeeds but hey, that’s the beauty of doing something new - you’re heading into the unknown.

Yet I’m not a developer, I’m merely a humble reviewer who happens to prefer the hands-on approach that Horizon promises but doesn’t deliver. If you are like me, then the game is a tough sell.

Half a great 4X game, dragged screaming into the nearest black hole by its lesser components.
