Kult may shake up a few areas but doesn’t change the formula, it’s like using a slightly deeper shade of purple and nobody notices. There’s a good storyline in here and if you’re up for some RPG action, Kult should be on your mind. Just don’t expect anything new.

Does little to enliven the usual trail of hacking, slashing and opening boxes. We're pretty sure it shows the world's worst character creation screen: you can change your hairstyle and, er, your clothing. [Christmas 2004, p.122]

Though it might appear a little dated, the game offers some innovative features, such as the addition of the Dreamworld, combined with a good story.

It's a solid experience with a somewhat steep learning curve...and a surprisingly deep skill system.

The game plays well, and although the character abilities aren’t particularly original (elemental attacks, etc.) this is more a criticism of the whole genre, and Kult has a refreshing system to learn and use them. The story is a strong point too, which for an RPG is probably the most important aspect for most players.

In all, Heretic Kingdoms does more new things in one game than I’ve seen in the last dozen games I’ve played combined. That’s a good thing, and it almost makes up for the game’s technical problems.

It works, but we have a sense of been there and done that. What keeps the game interesting and compelling is watching the growth of the main character.

Heretic's innovative design deserves applause. [July 2005, p.73]

The saving grace of this game is its affordable price mark.
