With welcome enhancements, oodles of entertaining guest boss encounters, and incredibly fun core games, Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 1+2 Dual Collection is a must for any fan of 2D action.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 1+2 Dual Collection delivers two distinct takes on Copen's high-speed action, with the original standing out as one of Inti Creates' strongest 2D action platformers. While the sequel's divisive gameplay changes and the underwhelming Endless Battle mode prevent this package from reaching the same heights throughout, newcomers will still find an excellent first game and a worthwhile introduction to the Luminous Avenger series. Thankfully, newcomers have some thrilling action to look forward to in this package. Despite the second entry being a considerable drop in quality, it still has its moments, and the first game is a phenomenal must-play. Above all else, after seeing this saga’s highs and lows, I’m curious to see what direction the upcoming Luminous Avenger iX 3 takes.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 1-2 Dual Collection delivers the definitive version of a solid platforming duology, featuring a surprising story, a strong protagonist, memorable bosses, and great new additions like Infinite Battle mode and DLC. On the other hand, the drastic gameplay changes and the second chapter's inferior plot might frustrate or alienate those expecting an experience similar to the original, even with improvements like the new buff.
