The game throws you into an unhabitent island and leaves you there i knew nothinf of the story and it really didn't appeal to me even later on when i did some research. The combat mechanics are kinda cool but at the same time feels... useless, you can only control your own character which **** there also is auto battle which makes it a lot easier but boring. The characters are bland with no real connection being build. There is no exploration, npc's, city's and extra quest to make the game have more enjoyability.

8.0/10. Final Fantasy XIII delivers a visually stunning, story-driven experience with a strong focus on its characters and world. The combat system evolves into something strategic and rewarding, though its linear structure can feel restrictive for some players. While divisive, it offers a polished, emotionally engaging journey with memorable moments.

Final Fantasy XIII delivers a bold, refreshing take on the series that deserves far more appreciation than it gets. The game’s stunning visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, and fast‑paced Paradigm battle system create an experience that feels both modern and unmistakably Final Fantasy. The story is emotional and character‑driven, with each member of the cast receiving meaningful development as the journey unfolds. While the game is more linear than past entries, that focus allows its narrative and world‑building to shine without unnecessary filler. Combat becomes increasingly strategic and rewarding, especially in later chapters and post‑game content. Combined with its memorable soundtrack and polished presentation, FFXIII stands out as one of the most unique and cohesive entries in the **** you’re open to a fresh direction and appreciate strong storytelling, stylish combat, and gorgeous world design, Final Fantasy XIII is absolutely worth revisiting. Don't pay any attention to that bunch of **** who say this game is trash because it's NOT their childhood like VII.

This entry killed my interest in the FF series for many years until FF7 Remake. I bought it on release date but couldn't even get through 2 hours of it so put it down and didn't go back for around 5 years, to which I played up to the introduction of Hope & Vanille, just their introduction made me quit the game for good.

The worst game in the series. Incredibly linear, with barebone gameplay systems, and with a mess of a story. Avoid at all costs unless you are into interactive movies.

I really tried to like this game, but sadly I just can't. The story is confusing and really dumb at points, alot of the characters are just unlikable, and the combat system is just boring and overly complicated. It's just a game that feels very dull, but it's still decent enough... I guess.

The port had some bugs and NO graphical options, which is insane. It's since been updated to include basic graphics options, which doesn't hurt. Do you remember when Squaresoft were an amazing company? So do I and I miss those times. HOWEVER! This game is simply amazing. It was great on the consoles and it's even better on PC. Why is it better here? Because we can mod it! I can't speak for how far the modding community will go, but by god it looks good with the mods. As for how it plays, nothing different and nothing added, just the brilliant game that was release all those years ago. If you haven't played it, please put up with Square and give it a go. You'll love it. If you have played it and want it to look better and relive the great times, then get it!! NOW!! It's a real shame that we can't buy this game on PC, though. We have to make do with renting it from steam.

The music is awesome, the story is great, the models of the characters look way more modern than a 2009-game if you use the HD-mods that I am using, and look more like the FF7 Remake models, the battle-system is a mix between FFXII (12) and FFX (10) - it is turned-based like in FF10 but you only control one character like in FF12- the other two are AI-controlled - I find this battle-system refreshing after playing FF7 remake, as it's more like the older titles - but I will say that when I played a little bit (maybe 3 hours) out of this game on the PlayStation 3 in 2009 that I didn't like two things - the battle-system because it wasn't exactly like in FF10 or the older titles, but I like it now because it's more like the older titles than the more recent games - you will find it nostalgic now unlike in 2009 where it felt new, and second, I didn't like the linear areas of the game where you can only run one straight line without any towns, no open world like in FF7/FF8/FF9 and possibly FF10? I did never finish 10, 12 also had an open world but this one is very linear - which I felt was a bit boring back when playing the PS3 version for about 3 hours 15 years ago - I will say that the story is great so you keep playing for the next story cut-scene, but it is not very fun going from cut-scene to cut-scene, as it feels like you can only go one single path and you're forced to fight all the monsters that are in your path, unlike in the older titles where you had random encounters so you weren't forced to fight in every single area, in FFXIII (13) you can't avoid the same monsters and so if you replay the game it would just be a case of rinse and repeat - Yes, I dislike the enemies being in the field, it's more fun with random encounters so you're not always forced to fight the same monsters at the very same places, however I'd say the game is exciting enough for you to continue playing, and the battle-system is fun but could be a bit of a bore. All in all I do recommend this game, but I think that FFX (10) whilst having in my opinion a less interesting story compared to 13, it certainly had better gameplay. FF13 has the same feel on the field but is more like a mix between 10 and 12 in battle - this is better than the later titles, but worse than the older in my opinion. FF13 is certainly better in 2024 than it was in 2009, simply because I prefer it's battle-system over the modern **** characters are also interesting with good stories. I'm also using a hair color mod changing Lightning's hair to blonde from pink, and changing Vanille's hair from crimson red to light blonde - there are many options - I disliked the choice of hair colors for the female characters - pink hair etc - not what I would call hot - so the PC version allows you to change their hair color to blonde, black etc so that they go from unattractive EMO girls to actually attractive characters. Lightning is female Cloud Strife, and fit better with blonde hair. I would rate the PS3 version lower because of the bad hair colors of the characters. Blonde Lightning is how she should have looked.

It's a very boring game. Don't listen to fans that tell you this has the best combat in the series, you absolutely can beat the whole game just using autobattle. OST is very mid, the two good songs are for boss battles. Game is pretty but that's just about the only highlight.

This is a game i played as a kid and i remember really enjoying it back then, though i did play on my cousin's maxed save and if you play through the game you can definitely see that it's not the most fun experience until you reach the later chapters, that really is the main problem, the story is fine if you dig deep into it, the combat is amazing in my opinion, it really falls apart when you spend hours running through super linear hallways in most chapters, but it's one of those games where the high points later on are just so high that it's worth pushing through some bad game design and boring chapters, i think the people who hate this game don't play through enough of it and i get it, but i haven't really heard many negative reviews from anyone who has actually played through the whole thing. i have personally put about 200 hours into the game, having maxed out all my characters on 2 different saves and i've beaten the main story 3 times, once on ps3 and twice on pc later on (though the pc port has some issues). i would probably give it a 7.5 as a more accurate score but i can't give it a 7 because i'd rather play this than a lot of 7/10 games

I have to admit I’m a **** for strong party dynamics, and personally I fell in love with the cast of XIII, so I could overlook the linearity until the world opens up later in the game. The Paradigm Shift system keeps combat engaging yet strategic and the visuals and art still look gorgeous today. If you don’t mind a mostly linear but beautiful adventure, give Final Fantasy XIII a try.

This game had a lot of potential. Great music and a good innovative battle system. Unfortunately, there are so many annoying soft locks at bosses, mostly due to being forced to use certain characters as “the leader” or just bad team combinations. It doesn’t help that all the characters are very unlikable either and the cutscenes are mostly too long. Could have been a 9/10 with a few changes which essentially comes down to not constantly locking you in to using certain party member combinations

While it does have a couple of redeeming qualities, they all get buried under a long list of issues and poor design choices. I really wanted to like this game, but after 40 hours I 100% agree with the poor reviews. In short, the game has an interesting world, decent characters and an (on paper) good strategic combat system, that all gets buried under a mountain of issues ranging from development struggles to, poor gameplay design to technical issues on PC. I dont think even a full remake can save this game. The world itself is great; futuristic with unique designs and ideas. The characters, however, are not great, some are okay, while others are just horrible (Vanille). The way they are presented just makes it really hard to relate to them. The story is decent on paper, but how it is told in-game is just confusing and hard to understand. I feel like the story is a reflection of how the game's developers felt working on it: they were lost and hopeless with no clear direction. The pacing of the game is probably the worst part: the first 13 hours are a tutorial with a huge info dumps into the story and characters with "mash X button" gameplay and long straight corridors. I guess it is meant to invest you into the story, but does a poor job of it due to the confusing story-telling. This mind-numbing section leaves players a bad impression of the unique combat system, which does have a few redeeming qualities. The next section, about 13-25 hours in, is probably the best part about the game. It focuses on teaching the paradigm system, giving the player fixed party composition and fights that are designed to introduce the player into the advanced combat mechanics. The levels open up a bit, instead of long straight corridors you sometimes get branching paths and hidden items, but it unnecessarily long, and often you just wait for each section to be over already. The last part of the game, about 26 hours in, is like playing a different game. You get thrown into a huge open area, where 99% of the encounters literally 1-shot your team. This is where the gameplay goes from "I need to think what's a good paradigm for this fight" to ""oh, you didnt have the perfect setup of 6 paradigms and characters for this fight? Too bad, you die". You will die, a lot. This is also where the issues with the combat system begin to show. Basically, every encounter has specific paradigms setups you are supposed to use. If you use the wrong paradigms, you will either A) die instantly B) fight he enemies for 7-10 minutes and win C) fight he enemies for 7-10 minutes, then die instantly to a mechanic that you have no idea about. Since you cannot chance padargims of characters mid-battle and there's a only 6 paradigms setups at a time, this results in gameplay where you basically "need to die" to change to the correct setups, which is not great. In short, instead of playing the game the way you want with the characters you like (the point of any RPG) you have pre-determined setups you are SUPPOSED to use, but no way of knowing what they are beforehand. All these issues regarding the combat system are far too many to list here, but another major issue that stands out is the difficulty curve. The first section of the game is mind-numbingly boring, the second is decently challenging, the third is nuclear difficulty. in the third section, once you near the end of the game you catch up in levels and the fights become doable, but then towards the ending normal mob fights become nuclear difficulty again, unless you have grinded 30 extra hours to max all your characters. Additionally, the difficulty of encounters (regular and boss fights) varies greatly. This may be a relic of the PS3 era of games, but overall it was just painful seeing your player character get 1-shot with no way to resurrect them.

Probably one of my most disappointing FF experiences, I recall feeling how let down I was by this game with the poor design, forgettable soundtrack (just how in a FF game?) and all those hours trying to enjoy a game that just didn't click for me. Lightning deserved a better introduction of Final Fantasy given the fact she could have potentially been an awesome character but I could really take away much else being good from 13. It's a shame.

Is Final Fantasy XIII perfect? No. Absolutely not, but it is an incredible game I seriously recommend any Final Fantasy fan at least tries for themselves. It is polarising, I personally heard nothing but negativity about this game before I played it, but it ended up being one of my favourite games of all time. I encourage you to try it for yourself. This game is outright stunning. The graphical prowess this game showed 13 years ago, is just insane. The game consistently looks gorgeous and has you marvelling at the scenery. The aesthetic is very good, I love the enemy designs and the futuristic clashing with nature. The music is also unabashedly just a masterpiece. Masashi Hamauzu is an incredible composer and this soundtrack never falters, it is ALWAYS firing on full cylinders. I think the Paradigm battle system is extremely unique and fun, the switching from paradigm to paradigm based on your situation is heart-pumping and fun, and keeps you on your toes, without being too overwhelming or frustrating. The system shines strongest in boss battles, where it's just you, your strategy and some tough as nails encounters. The Cie'th missions on Pulse are excellent additions to the game, and kept me playing for hours and hours. The story and characters are again, polarising. I personally adored the characters, their struggle feels palpable and there are many emotional scenes where they shine very brightly indeed. The story is admittedly somewhat confusing, and while it mostly does a good job of explaining what's happening, it also does hide some details in loading screens and in Datalog entries, which is an issue. However the central idea of fighting against fate in a world against you is extremely compelling. The game does have some major problems. The first is that the first 2 hours of the game, up until Anima is defeated are EXTREMELY boring. Until you get access to Paradigms, the game struggles to be interesting outside of the story. This, undoubtedly has turned players off from getting to the major meat of the game. It's honestly of my most major criticisms of the game. It's too slow to get going. It also suffers from that classic Final Fantasy problem of having permanently missable items that can lock you out from getting all of the achievements, so DO NOT sell any weapons or equipment if you want that Platinum Trophy. There are more minor nit-picks I have, like the fact the characters aren't equal, some are better than others very obviously, and some roles are underutilised, but the game overall was an extremely fun time and I'd recommend you try it out. It's a special experience unlike any other.

Incredibly boring corridor guided jrpg with action elements. By far the worst and least engaging FF, took a lot of steps back compared to even the now almost 30 years old entries for the sake of simplifying the gameplay. Another example of publisher trading creativity and innovation for marketing driven goals.

To see such a legendary franchise create such a pretty-looking yet abysmal game was shocking. I recall playing this game for about 30 minutes before recognizing my own immense boredom and frustration. This was one of the first games I played that I would have truly considered to be "bad," and was taken aback by my own boredom. If you have enjoyed other Final Fantasy games, you might find this marginally tolerable. Otherwise, do yourself a favour and give it a pass.
