While the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren’t perfect, they’re certainly the best and most convenient ways to play these classic games. The soundtracks are lovingly orchestrated and the pixel art is gorgeous, though the latter does lose some detail in the translation. Each game feels great to play, but I do wish extra content from previous releases or remakes had been included.

The reinvigorated editions of the first three Final Fantasy games look great, run smoothly and offer some very welcome new features that modern audience expects (e.g. the auto-battle mode and auto-save). The new music arrangements done by Nobuo Uematsu himself are marvelous and the redrawn visuals are vibrant and full of details. Of course, these games are heavily outdated in terms of gameplay and storytelling, so their simplicity might discourage newcomers, but they are still a lot of fun and a great opportunity to experience the revered classics. The first three Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are a somewhat solid remastering effort that could have been so much better with a few tweaks. While the amazing rearranged soundtracks sound great and the balancing tweaks make the three games still feel great to play, the divisive overhauled visuals reminiscent of the 16-bit entries, technical issues like the lack of a V-Sync toggle and display settings not saving and lack of additional content found in prior remakes make these remasters a truly worthy purchase only for those who live and breathe Final Fantasy.

Too preoccupied with ignoring everything that is supposed to make the hero's journey fun and interesting, Final Fantasy 1 is a journey where you have to look up a guide every dozen minutes or so to know what your incredibly linear next step should be, which really doesn't make it that great **** experience in 2026. Luckily, the opening few hours of this game actually tell a straightforward story with dialogue and cutscenes guiding your way through the world, yet after a certain point the game just devolves into tedium. I can easily look past the bloated number of enemy encounters, the simple mechanics that are more influential than they are actually fun to engage with, the BS design of the final boss encounter, and even some of the jank that is bound to be a part **** this old. But when you're trying to make me believe that my group of characters are the saviours of this world, yet (outside of the most random, hidden characters and absurdly convoluted riddles) nobody on this godforsaken map gives me any type of clue as to what I'm supposed to be doing, where I'm supposed to be going, or anything, really, in order to save their lives... And all I can say is that I'm glad gaming has evolved from these earlier stages into what it is today. Influential? Absolutely! Fun to play? Nah, not really.

The way I see it, there are two reasons to play the first of the finals of the fantasies. Either you’re an old-head making a trip down nostalgia lane, or you’re a fan of the later entries and want to make the pilgrimage to the series origin. Both are valid, but it’s debatable which version of Final Fantasy I is the “most correct” to play in the year 2026. The Pixel Remaster is the version in my Steam library and thus, that is the one I have chosen. I will also be judging Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster as a singular and fully representative product as opposed to making comparison between versions. FF I’s world is downright spartan. The player-characters are empty, voiceless shells, and NPCs are utilitarian, offering little more than hints to lead the player to the next key item. The quests themselves are equally sparse. I’m reminded of old one-shot adventure module synopses you might find in a Dungeons and Dragons magazine. “The Elf Prince has fallen into a magical sleep! Brave the lair of the Dark Elf Astos and retrieve the Jolt Tonic to awaken the rightful heir!”, fully encompasses all the flavor the game will give you for that specific quest. Saving this from being a vorpal flaw is the context that this was originally an 80’s Famicom game, thus limited in scope, as well as an overall charming art design. Sprite work is great, taking concepts by Yoshitaka Amano and doing a surprisingly good job at translating his illustrative and loose water colors into pixelated monsters. Even the more simply designed playable characters have an iconic appeal. The Black Mage is a design that will always stick with me, and others, to the point where it would come back in subsequent titles. A fantastic score by Nobuo Uematsu captures the grand high fantasy flavor of this world-traveling adventure. From peaceful town themes, to triumphant victory fanfare, to moody dungeons, everything is well-composed, catchy and on message. I was disappointed that the final boss did not come with his own track, at least on the original score setting that I was playing on - a feature I had come to expect as a staple from playing the sequels. But, on the whole, the FFI’s OST is truly beautiful, and it’s no wonder so many of it’s melodies remain present and iterated on in subsequent entries to the franchise. Lacking in traps and puzzles - with the exception of the Citadel of Trials - gameplay is restricted solely to turn-based combat. Solid in design but limited in player choice, your main focus will be deciding which spells to use and how often as in this Final Fantasy, spells are divided into charges by level, again, similar to Dungeons and Dragons. This resource management however is obviated by about two-thirds into the game as the character will be bestowed an embarrassment of riches from dungeons, including items that can be used indefinitely and without consequence to cast mid-tier but still powerful spells. You can enter a comforting flow state while playing the game, but don’t expect a challenge. Attempting to judge the original Final Fantasy in the wake of it’s sequels and almost 40 years of time since passed, is a difficult task. This is a JRPG in it’s most base and primordial form, begging to be expanded and iterated on. In many ways, from monster designs to gameplay mechanics, FFI feels more like an off-brand D&D game than the Final Fantasy we know of today. If you’re a fan, give it a shot. But I can’t see traveling back in time being worth it to someone who is lacking in the greater context of the Final Fantasy franchise. A “limited by the technology of my time” 6 out of 10.

I like the original Final Fantasy, but I honestly haven’t touched it since the PlayStation release. I have tried to pick it up here and there, but find myself getting bored of the grind and the pace. The auto-battle injects so much energy into it that I couldn’t put the game down. Combined with the visuals and music, I just wanted to spend every minute playing Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. It’s an excitement I haven’t felt for the original Final Fantasy in decades, and I hope the other entries capture the same feeling.

Overall, between the game’s story and gameplay, nothing sticks out as individually exceptional. Still, Final Fantasy comes together as an experience that is better than the sum of its parts. The Pixel Remaster does an excellent job of keeping the surprisingly well-aged gameplay that started the series intact while updating it with more modern pixel art and a beautiful soundtrack. Outside of a few confusing moments and poorly balanced bosses, Final Fantasy is a game I would readily recommend to modern RPG fans, and it’s a great introduction to the genre’s classics.

larry is stalking me and being weird because some new square enix games flopped and made him lose all his stocks or something, but this game is 6 turnBASEDs KINOs and i give it the perfect score of 60/10/6 = 10/10.

For fans of the classic series, or newcomers looking for a quality introduction into the older games, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a great way to experience the series. Then, of course, there are the hours and hours of content across all games in the collection to consider. It isn't perfect, but players can easily get lost in the same stories and endless combat that Square Enix first introduced with the original launch on NES.

The bottom line is Final Fantasy is simply a fun game, and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a remake worthy of the title’s legacy.

I come away from Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 looking forward to the remaining games more than I did before. I appreciate the new features like the enhanced bestiary, the auto-combat feature, making grinding friendlier, and I LOVE the new soundtracks. But I hope they manage to address issues like the screen tearing and especially the font before the last three games release.

I can't compare this to the original version. But I had fun playing and the game looked very pretty. It was interesting to see how the series started, and I can see why it was popular. But compared to the later games it was a very prototype-feeling game. Very simple story and mechanics.

First time playing (and beating) a FF series game. It was definitely not that bad, considering the age of the first entry, but not really that engaging either, except the final part of the game (for some reason, FF I have one of the weirdest difficulty spike on my memory. Anyway, that was a great old school experience with some polished retro graphics.

SummaryThis is the ironically named game that started it all. You take control of the Warriors of Light, off on a journey to defeat four fiends and restore peace to the world. So many of the elements of the series that we've come to know and love make their debut right here in this very first entry: a massive world full of mystery, some iconic... Read More
