Too preoccupied with ignoring everything that is supposed to make the hero's journey fun and interesting, Final Fantasy 1 is a journey where you have to look up a guide every dozen minutes or so to know what your incredibly linear next step should be, which really doesn't make it that great **** experience in 2026. Luckily, the opening few hours of this game actually tell a straightforward story with dialogue and cutscenes guiding your way through the world, yet after a certain point the game just devolves into tedium. I can easily look past the bloated number of enemy encounters, the simple mechanics that are more influential than they are actually fun to engage with, the BS design of the final boss encounter, and even some of the jank that is bound to be a part **** this old. But when you're trying to make me believe that my group of characters are the saviours of this world, yet (outside of the most random, hidden characters and absurdly convoluted riddles) nobody on this godforsaken map gives me any type of clue as to what I'm supposed to be doing, where I'm supposed to be going, or anything, really, in order to save their lives... And all I can say is that I'm glad gaming has evolved from these earlier stages into what it is today. Influential? Absolutely! Fun to play? Nah, not really.

The way I see it, there are two reasons to play the first of the finals of the fantasies. Either you’re an old-head making a trip down nostalgia lane, or you’re a fan of the later entries and want to make the pilgrimage to the series origin. Both are valid, but it’s debatable which version of Final Fantasy I is the “most correct” to play in the year 2026. The Pixel Remaster is the version in my Steam library and thus, that is the one I have chosen. I will also be judging Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster as a singular and fully representative product as opposed to making comparison between versions. FF I’s world is downright spartan. The player-characters are empty, voiceless shells, and NPCs are utilitarian, offering little more than hints to lead the player to the next key item. The quests themselves are equally sparse. I’m reminded of old one-shot adventure module synopses you might find in a Dungeons and Dragons magazine. “The Elf Prince has fallen into a magical sleep! Brave the lair of the Dark Elf Astos and retrieve the Jolt Tonic to awaken the rightful heir!”, fully encompasses all the flavor the game will give you for that specific quest. Saving this from being a vorpal flaw is the context that this was originally an 80’s Famicom game, thus limited in scope, as well as an overall charming art design. Sprite work is great, taking concepts by Yoshitaka Amano and doing a surprisingly good job at translating his illustrative and loose water colors into pixelated monsters. Even the more simply designed playable characters have an iconic appeal. The Black Mage is a design that will always stick with me, and others, to the point where it would come back in subsequent titles. A fantastic score by Nobuo Uematsu captures the grand high fantasy flavor of this world-traveling adventure. From peaceful town themes, to triumphant victory fanfare, to moody dungeons, everything is well-composed, catchy and on message. I was disappointed that the final boss did not come with his own track, at least on the original score setting that I was playing on - a feature I had come to expect as a staple from playing the sequels. But, on the whole, the FFI’s OST is truly beautiful, and it’s no wonder so many of it’s melodies remain present and iterated on in subsequent entries to the franchise. Lacking in traps and puzzles - with the exception of the Citadel of Trials - gameplay is restricted solely to turn-based combat. Solid in design but limited in player choice, your main focus will be deciding which spells to use and how often as in this Final Fantasy, spells are divided into charges by level, again, similar to Dungeons and Dragons. This resource management however is obviated by about two-thirds into the game as the character will be bestowed an embarrassment of riches from dungeons, including items that can be used indefinitely and without consequence to cast mid-tier but still powerful spells. You can enter a comforting flow state while playing the game, but don’t expect a challenge. Attempting to judge the original Final Fantasy in the wake of it’s sequels and almost 40 years of time since passed, is a difficult task. This is a JRPG in it’s most base and primordial form, begging to be expanded and iterated on. In many ways, from monster designs to gameplay mechanics, FFI feels more like an off-brand D&D game than the Final Fantasy we know of today. If you’re a fan, give it a shot. But I can’t see traveling back in time being worth it to someone who is lacking in the greater context of the Final Fantasy franchise. A “limited by the technology of my time” 6 out of 10.

The game that started the Final Fantasy franchise, the one and only, remastered and upgraded. Thanks to some modernisations, can be enjoyed by players today, although in my honest opinion this is a game mostly for those who are either nostalgic, curious about how the series started, or avid JRPG fans. For those who do not apply to any of the three groups, I would not recommend this game. The story is nothing to tell your kids about, neither is the gameplay or the world, with really confusing moments while progressing the game, but there is a unique feeling while playing it that makes you feel, let’s say, cozy (the really great OST helps too), even for me with little JRPG experience and none in Final Fantasy games. I enjoyed my playthrough even though I did find it only a bit above mediocre, but that made me look forward even more to the next games, to find out how the series evolved, and what exactly made it what it is today.

I liked it. The rearranged music is super good. The story is nice and the game has that cozy feel. The start can be a bit tough. It gets a bit easier but the final boss is a good challenge. Well made game.

larry is stalking me and being weird because some new square enix games flopped and made him lose all his stocks or something, but this game is 6 turnBASEDs KINOs and i give it the perfect score of 60/10/6 = 10/10.

I can't compare this to the original version. But I had fun playing and the game looked very pretty. It was interesting to see how the series started, and I can see why it was popular. But compared to the later games it was a very prototype-feeling game. Very simple story and mechanics.

Final Fantasy did a lot of establish the JPRG genre, but it hasn't aged all that well unfortunately. The Pixel Remaster does do a lot to alleviate some of the games more outdated features thankfully.

I’d never played anything before FFVII, but I’ve loved most of the games since then, so when I saw they’d done a remaster of 1-6, I had to pick them up. They work great on my SteamDeck, and I had a lot of fun playing the first instalment. It is a little rudimentary, but in its defence, it is a 35-year-old NES game, and I still had a grand old time for most of it. It looks pretty, the music is great, and the gameplay holds up if you like turn-based combat. Be warned; there are some weird difficulty spikes. I had to use a guide to defeat the last boss after waltzing through most of the rest of the game, for example, but all in all, it is a fun time that doesn’t show its age too badly. I look forward to tackling the second in the series next.

First time playing (and beating) a FF series game. It was definitely not that bad, considering the age of the first entry, but not really that engaging either, except the final part of the game (for some reason, FF I have one of the weirdest difficulty spike on my memory. Anyway, that was a great old school experience with some polished retro graphics.

To put it mildly, I'm not a fan of the series, I've played it for 30 minutes on a Gameboy for my whole life. As well as JRPGs that I have never encountered. But now I'm experimenting, and therefore, seeing a fresh repack from FitGirl on the torrents, I swung to try it. It turned out to be an unexpectedly interesting experience! There are two graphics modes in the configurations there: normal and classic. In the classic, a filter is applied on top of the game, slightly blurring the pixels and putting stripes on the picture, forming a visual effect that was on old TVs in the original. It's not bad — the first part was released in the late 80s on bearded consoles, and on PC it comes out for the first time at all. Naturally, craftsmen have managed to play it through emulators before, but these are all crutches. To tell the truth, the most that I liked about it was the simplicity of the gameplay and the undemanding nature of resources. In order to play, you don't even need a mouse. It eats scanty resources, so it can be run on a laptop and not worry about the cooling system and power consumption. Although my machine has an impressive power reserve, I don't like when it has to be fully used because I know how much it costs to solder an integrated graphics processor to the motherboard. For a long time I thought that I liked the plot the most in games, and such inclusions as **** Valley, which I played for 50 hours on the computer, and then a few years later again the same amount on the phone, seemed to me a statistical error. But one day I downloaded Disco Elysium, and despite the fact that there is a plot in every click, and there is more text in the game than in some multi-volumes, for some reason I was not impressed with it. Although maybe in ten years I will change my mind, I had it with the same Wolfenstein The New Order. And one day I heard someone's thought that, in fact, the main criterion by which the game should be evaluated is the gameplay. If it doesn't tighten, then whatever the graphics are (I didn't pass any of the Crysis series, by the way), whatever the plot, there is no sense from it. And by the way, this perfectly explains the era of the formation of shooters, when in the noughties everyone was already tired of monotony and the same COD: MW entered the market, offering just a huge pile of classes from driving and banal shooting to stealth and aerial support for ground operations. This is not the first game of that time with such a diverse plot, I just still remember it relatively, and I have already forgotten the others. In a word, not to say that the same COD series impressed with the depth and (haha) variability of the plot, but it has always been some kind of unprecedented entertainment attraction that did not allow you to be bored for a second, and this is the main sign of good gameplay. But good gameplay doesn't have to be that diverse. It is equally important that he gives a field for experiments, and if there are not many components in it, but each of them will be deeply worked out and, most importantly, they can be combined at their discretion, developing their own style of play — this is already the greatest success. Many modern games give the player hundreds of hours of gameplay, for some reason this criterion is now considered fundamental. And all these hundreds of hours are woven from monotonous tasks, loot and crafting, each element of which stretches from series to series and is scripted from now to now, as for example in the latest games of the FarCry series. But in my opinion, the game should first of all be a canvas on which each player creates his own picture with the available tools, and not a movie or routine, and Square Enix coped with this task wonderfully, in this case — for the second time. This is not only a good example of games, but also an exemplary example of a remaster.

The first ever Final Fantasy took what made Dragon Quest a success and expanded upon it with multiple characters and classes. While bare bones by today's standards, it still holds up as a fun old-school RPG.

The graphics and true widescreen are great, the redone tracks are awesome, only real downside is that they made this the easiest version ever with faster leveling and gil rates, though you can still get screwed by RNG. No more peninsula of power which is odd, they took it out to force you to have a harder time, but then made the game easier? Has treasure maps in-game, but everyone uses a guide for that in these sorts of games anyway, so not a big deal to me.

The map improvements and auto battle are nice additions. it maintains the spirit of ff1 which is simple in nature. You can finish it in roughly 20 hours which is on par for other ports. Lastly, as far as steam goes, 100% the game for achievements isn't too grindy either.

Just stick with PSP or GBA releases. This version have some cool new things, and the artsyle is decent, but compared to the other remakes of FF1, it just lacks any new impressive thing or even removed it completely like the extra dungeons. I know that some people prefer the original artsyle, but it was that hard to include an option to change the graphics, gameplay and music of the other versions before starting the game? Is still a good game, and one of the best versions to my favorite game in the franchise, but as a remaster that wants to improve in a very old game, is just a hit or miss.

If it was a mobile-only thing it'd be bad enough, but Square is going as far as releasing it on Steam and not on ANY console!? They know it'd sell well, they know there'd be a big market for it, but they're shooting themselves in the foot for no reason at all, aside from being jerks.

Well, Square.
Consider this 0 score my interest in the remasters being ported to consoles (where they started) Some of us don't want to sit at a PC playing a lengthy RPG, or having a hot laptop on our lap, or playing on a tiny phone/tablet screen. Some of us want to kick back in comfort in front of a nice big Tv and enjoy the game that way. Hope

Great game, unfairly criticized for not going to console. Reviews should be about the game and gameplay and not about which consoles it is on or not on. Imagine if Halo was review bombed for not being on Playstation or if Jack and Daxter was review bombed for not being on Xbox. This game is great and you definitely don't need a super pc to play this game. With PCs in many more homes than consoles, this is just a silly thing to criticize it for.

Game looks worse than the original imo. The gba remake is better looking. This version adds no worthwhile improvements and the graphics are terrible.

What I liked: remastered music, improved dialogue, auto-battle option, bestiary and the new USEFUL maps. What I didn't like: It's too faithful to the original NES version. I'd have liked for there to be a lot more expanded content, more to do, more to explore, etcetera.

Finally gave me a reason to replay the games. Game play is damn near exact to the original that I played first when I was 10 years old. The updated graphics aren't intrusive and the updated music is so like the original I didn't even notice it till ~10 hours in.

I've played all the versions of 1 that came out in the US, this one is my favorite. Looks crisp, music is amazing, plays well with fast forward and auto battle for grinds, fun achievement system that encourages exploration, maps for every town and dungeon so you can find your way without frustration (they could have added that as like a treasure chest or in town purchase, but either way I'm glad it's in) beastiary to show where monsters are and treasure chest counters per map for those who wish to 100% the game and not go freaking crazy trying to figure out which town or dungeon that last chest is in. Quality of life improvements that, sure, make the game a bit easier, but as an adult with much less free time on my hands than when I was a kid, I sure appreciate those. I was able to 100% the game in 17 hours, which was neat. They should port this to consoles, but review bombing is not the way to go.

After tweaking the tearing and the bad font, I really enjoyed the game. And even though Square Enix can't figure how to add V Sync and still forces us to use windowed mode by default in all of their games, it's still a great remaster of one I enjoyed the most as a kid. But then again, I still don't understand why Square Enix is so thirsty to see its fans begging on their knees to also release them on consoles. It was the obvious choice in the first place.

While the game retains much of the added storyline brought in with the revisions made for the original PlayStation edition, it reduces any chance of being a great remake to absolute Zero with not only bad graphics, but an even worse font. The PlayStation, Android, Windows Mobile, iOS, and GameBoy Advance versions really brought out the best revisions in of the series, but this version feels rushed and subpart even compared to the original NES version. This version feels subpar in every way possible. The graphics really do not hold up well compared to the forementioned revisions. I honestly feel this was not only a rushed release, but a cash grab. I honestly would waste my money on this version. They really shouldn't have taken the updated versions off of Steam in favor of these.

This version of Final Fantasy is worthy of the title of remaster. Think of when Nintendo did remasters of the NES Super Mario Bros games with Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES. That is the vibe Square Enix is trying to create with the first three pixel remasters. The gameplay is true to the original (of course the old code bugs have been corrected)

I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy I. I used to speedrun the PSP version and have played the NES version radomizer. This version replicates and is true to the NES without all the broken mechanics and improved sprites. I wish they had gone with the PSP sprites and added content, but this is still solid and enjoyable.

They somehow got Nobuo Uematsu, the music composer, and Kazuko Shibuya, the original sprite artist, to come back and make a proper remake of this classic. I've played all of the versions through the years, and this is easily the definitive edition. The music alone makes it worth the purchase. It might not have the added content from other releases, but all of those additions felt like lazy afterthoughts compared to the core content. This version also includes countless bug fixes and gameplay tweaks that massively improves the experience.

Other reviews are fake and salty it's not on their system, nothing about the game itself. Overall I like the remaster. Some nice quality of life upgrades like better music and some transition effects along with the ability to quick save. I do think they toned down the difficulty a bit as it seemed too easy. No intentional grinding, but no battles really had much of a challenge. Overall though, a very good game.

I support a console release, but consoles are stuck in 16:9 ratio. If you have the future standard monitor size of 21:9, you will find that the steam version plays beautifully with this extra screen space. I'm glad to be able to see the entire frame without having the sides cut-off. Also, this version of the game has easily the best music of any release. It absolutely crushes the PSP, and that matters. The graphics may be a matter of taste. I did personally love the HD 2D presentation of the PSP versions, but this SNES style remastering is growing on me. I think I may actually like it better. Either way, it's not bad. Otherwise the game is pretty much as you'd remember it if you've played any other iteration.

Great game, great remaster. This is in the vein of the psp remasters. Personally I prefer 2D versions of these original games, which was how they were designed. I’m happy they didn’t try to make a 3D version (eg ff4). As for the game itself, final fantasy is a challenging game, but a true classic. You WILL have to do some mild grinding from time to time to get gold required to buy weapons and spells. The party you pick from the start DOES matter. Be sure to bring a healer (white mage), after that you can get on with really any of them. Overall a great remake **** game.

Don't listen to the negative reviews of console individuals who are angry that these titles are not available on console. These games are small/lightweight and would run on even a basic laptop. What I have played of the game so far marks a faithful remastering **** I have the NES original cartridge for and played on NES back in the day. - Wonderful soundtrack updates - Beautifully updated sprites - YOU CAN MOVE DIAGONALLY! - Great help tips explaining how to use each spell - Authentic magic system to the original I appreciate Square's effort here. I do hope it eventually comes to consoles, especially the Switch, I see this working wonderfully on the go. Hopefully with a fix to the font, that's the only reason I would dock the score, it is a bit jarring. However, due to the overwhelming negative reviews I feel that I need to leave it at a 10 since the font is easy to adjust using online guides, and maybe Square will patch it down the road.

So music is excellent and adds very much to the game play. The added effects and transitions really add a whole lot to improve the playability. I'd like to point out the people giving this game bad reviews are upset there's no console release which seems unfair. I'd have bought it on switch if it was on switch but it doesn't make it a bad game.
