When it isn't being a frustrating game, Disgaea 5 can be a lot of fun. Once things slow down to grind, however, the story may be the only thing that will keep players going.
One of the most rewarding experiences on the PS4. [Issue#168, p.97]
Disgaea makes it PS4 debut, and it’s brighter than ever.

Disgaea 5 on the *switch* doesn't tempt me to play it. I enjoy this type of game, but I learned that the game requires an internet connection, plays like a mobile game, and has rudimentary characters and a nonsensical plot. I understand the point of the game is combat, but again, I don't feel tempted to get involved with a game that doesn't invite me to stay. It would be easier for me to give the game more of a chance if it didn't require an internet connection. I would suggest others to look somewhere else within the genre, because I believe most games would have more to offer. I got this game on a big sale, and still found myself feeling disappointed. I really don't think it should be rated as favorably as it is.

I don't understand the hype behind this nonsensical game. The phase activation of characters is an annoying gimmick and the story was made for a 12 year old that likes fart jokes.

This is by far the best Disgaea game we’ve seen, and it is a strong contender to be the best tactics RPG ever created.

Disgaea 5 is the best game in the series to date. I might prefer the story/characters in other games sure, but the game mechanics have never been more refined and fun to break.

Another great entry in the franchise. It has the basic strengths of the Disgaea series with lovable quirky characters, an immersive story with a lot of dark humor and gameplay for easily hundred hours. To be fair the characters took a bit longer to win me over but then completely succeeded. The story uses complete new characters and is set in another demon realm with countless worlds or neatherrealms. Each is ruled by an overlord. The overlord Void Dark is conquering world after world with his army called Lost. He seems unstoppable. Our team of former overlords is forming an army to stop him. Sounds on first glance generic but is far more interesting and has a lot of dark humor. The characters are great but it took longer than the other games to amaze me. There is Killia who is a force to be recognized that flees from his past and wants to destroy Void Dark. There is Serpahina a princess that wants to charm all males to serve her. Red Magus is more muscles than brains and wants to become the strongest overlord. Christo became a favorite and you will see why when you uncover his story. Usalia is another favorite and has Naruto or better said Kurama vibes (meant positive by the way). Zeroken is a self proclaimed martial arts master but good hearten. Those work excellent. Together with the story we get a great experience. This would not be an amazing game if the gameplay was not good. As per franchise standard we get a lot. While other RPGs cap at level 99 here you can reach level 9999 (no typo) and even reincarnate to increase you stats further. You can improve items in the item world and characters in something that I consider a board mini game. I really enjoyed the last a lot and I would like to see this mechanic return in the next games. You can also throw teammates (do this carefully with Prinnies). There are colored Geo panels with pyramids given effects. Destroying them can cause chain reactions that damage all characters on them. The game has a lot of depth and you can easily get 100 hours of playtime out of it in a single playthrough. As in every Disgaea game there is a lot of content you can unlock after beating the main story. New for this game is a revenge mode. Think of it as limit breaks like in Final Fantasy 7. Receiving damage fills the gauge and when it is full you enter the revenge mode. Here you get a bit of damage resistance and abilities just cost 1 skill point to use. Beware this is also valid for enemies and you enter it automatically. There is a side quest shop where you can take side quests (Limited number!). Some are just “get this item” or “defeat x enemies” while other unlock new stuff. Another addition are squads. Characters get some bonuses in these and the more you improve these the more useful those get. There is now the ability to farm and change innocents to improve your items (Great addition). Lastly there is the curry shop. Curries improve your skills before battle and some are really useful. Graphically you see the increased power of the hardware. It looks more beautiful than ever and the unique style of the series was unchanged. The soundtrack works as well as in the other games. Overall this is again a strong entry in the franchise and worth playing. It has the strengths of the franchise with great characters, dark humor and lots of good gameplay.

Bigger in every feasible way when compared to previous series iterations. I’m not so sure it’s better in every way, though, as the sheer amount of content can feel either muddled or oppressive.

Disgaea 5 is an excellent title for any gamer, but the interesting mechanics, impressive visuals, and expansive universe make it a must-play for tactical RPG enthusiasts.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance implements some of the smartest choices the series has seen since its debut in 2003, making this not only the best Disgaea game to date, but one of the best Strategy-RPGs available.

Mainly recommended for the fan of the series. If you liked previous games, you'll enjoy this one, because it's basically the same. For those newbies, you'd better choose another option.

Combats and grinds are fun but the story is just painfully poor. Overall this is a good game for Disgaea fans.

Stopped playing after 5 minutes.. the display system is poorly-implemented orthogonal and the sprites look like they're from a terrible indie game. Not up to the production quality I expect from PS4 games. Sprites don't pop off the background so it's hard to distinguish them. Voice acting is absolutely awful. Tutorial does the actions for you, which is always annoying because you have no control and are just watching a video at that point. More JRPG tropes, this is why the genre is dying.
