Thirty dollars may seem a bit hefty for a free modification, but the incredible experience is well worth the price of admission. [Aug 2003, p.72]

The newly redone character models are quite detailed, and the sound, with whizzing bullets and explosions adding real tension, is fantastic. [Aug 2003, p.76]

Fun deathmatch game but no match for other games in the genre. I liked Day of Defeat on its own. It is a Deathmatch Classic or Half-Life Deathmatch reskin, set in a World War II setting. It is fast paced, responds well and can be fun to play. You connect to a server, choose your side and join the action. You can play two game modes: Detonation and Territorial control. With Detonation, you need to plant explosives on the enemy structures and blow them up. With Territorial Control, you need to capture strategic points, dominating the map eventually. You can choose various classes, each with their own loadouts, abilities and purpose. This way, a team can consists of various specialists which gives the game a more realistic feel when playing. The action can be intense and the overall multiplayer feeling is stronger than ever with this game. It can be compared to games like Counterstrike and Half-Life. The graphics are nice enough, although nothing special. It still runs on the same Source engine, that is used for many Valve games. However, like the other Valve games, the framerate is smooth as ever and no lag or tearing is ever present. Sound effects are really nice. Gunfire from Kar98 rifles and machine guns feel on point and give a nice feedback in your ears. For me, sound is important when playing WWII themed games to get me into the action. Control wise, Day of Defeat plays smooth, easy and fast paced. Aiming, shooting, running around, it all feels natural and responsive. Nothing to complain here. The only problem I had with Day of Defeat, is that it is simply not unique enough. There are hundreds of games out there in the WWII genre, with larger player bases, more content and more replay ability. So although Day of Defeat was fun, and there is nothing wrong with it, it just is not memorable and special enough for me to play for longer periods of time. If this game were your only option for some reason however, I would definitely recommend it.

I probably spent 2000+ hours on this game to date.. now not as often. It doesn't give me the same feeling it once did maybe because of all the bots and people hacking or maybe I just **** now. Most servers have bots people should start playing this game I don't want it to die. I never knew Activision created this game.. It's still their best game to date :P One of them anyways...

And, even with those minor lag issues and outdated graphics, we honestly recommend the game to both hardcore DoD modders and genre newbies.

The sense of satisfaction you feel in taking a crucial victory location or taking out four enemies in a row simply can't be beat.

Once you go online, the adrenaline rush is unsurpassed. [June 2003, p.57]

Compared to the new crop of tactical shooters such as "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," Day of Defeat may seem like a sparse offering but the straightforward gameplay is certain to captivate.

The gameplay is limited in scope and the maps are repetitive in theme, if not design. The visuals are decent enough, but definitely not up to the standards of most modern releases.

Best WW 2 online shooter by far. I will never forget how many months I did sink into this game, and despite me playing many other online games like Counter-Strike, WoW, CoD 2, DOTA, ecc, there is no game I look into the past and have such a nostalgia as DoD. I would still play it today if there was some server and active community. Sadly there is no good successor to it and game is pretty much dead but I miss it. I miss dod_avalanche in fun, I miss pcw's, I miss watching An1maL 4 or Jauntymal movies. This is one of the greatest games of all time, I do hope valve will make a newer version, not as crap as stupid source. They need to take true old school dod players to review it before they release another fail game like source was.

В игру ещё играют, но она устарела. Особенно это заметно после игры в Source версию, которая до сих пор выглядит восхитительно и играется так же спустя 10 лет после выхода. В эту версию можно поиграть с друзьями например, но лучше сразу погрузится в Day of Defeat Source.
