I very much like the art-style and story of CrossCode. Unfortunately, it is a very grindy game and I was often finding myself in the dilemma of wanting to finish the story, but not wanting to the slog through the repetitive combat and far too many puzzles. The developers probably see this is "lore-appropriate" as the game is set in an MMORPG and the character dialogue often jokes about the tedium of the gameplay. To be honest I find this kind of "haha look bad it is" self-awareness really off-putting. If you know it's bad, you shouldn't leave it in the game. In any case, I pushed through till the end and still have mixed feelings about this really was time well spent.

CrossCode promises a nostalgic return to 16-bit RPGs but fails to deliver. The storyline is convoluted and the gameplay mechanics quickly become a repetitive slog. The puzzles are tedious, designed more to inflate playtime than to challenge players. The graphics and soundtrack, while initially charming, become uninspired and forgettable. In a market full of innovative indie RPGs, CrossCode misses the mark, offering an unsatisfying experience that doesn't respect players' time.

One if not my favourite game as of right now, incredible gameplay split between exploration and combat with a few puzzles and rpg elements in the mix, gorgeous art and music too.
Incredible game for such a small team.

Excellent game, the story was incredibly engaging and both the combat and puzzles were very satisfying. I have to say I had a bit of trouble with certain difficulty spikes and the game not completely explaining some of it's mechanics but that didn't subtract from an amazing experience. Combat is some of the BEST that you can experience, it honestly is incredible that the devs managed to create such a big and incredible game with deep mechanics.

CrossCode is a phenomenal game with very interesting combat mechanics, great puzzles, and absolutely brilliant art style and music. It is tough, but in a very motivating way. I did not expect much by the story, but wow - so worth it.

It is boring, and it takes too much time to get hooked to the story, the open world mmorpg thing is not for everyone, the art is fine.

Amazing, one of the best indie games and RPGS you can play. An amazing story, characters like Lea and so many more with such strong personality and emotion expressed through some of the best spritework ive seen. World depth, great maps and interesting events, amazing fun gameplay with builds, elements, and rpg choices. Excellent combat with elements, build up, and awesome boss fights. Great fun dialogue that always adds more to story and keeps the tone appropriate. EXCELLENT SOUNDTRACK SO GOOD. This game is special its just excellent. it really should be worth more than it costs with even an excellent added dlc that completes the story so well. I cannot wait to see what these dev do next this is a masterclass.

(60+ hours as of this review/Base Game Completed. Forgive me, I'm bad at writing these. This is more enthusiastic blabbing about the game more than a review) CrossCode is fantastic! It does nearly everything right- Story, Characters, Gameplay, Art, Humor, Quest, even New Game Plus! In the first half of the game, its a bit slow. You're mostly vibing with your friends and playing the in universe MMO Crossworlds. Thankfully, the characters are great and are fun to have around. What's suprising is that the party members are actually smart, learning how an enemy attacks at first (watching them from a distance, being defensive) but after the first few fights with an enemy they know the best way to take down enemies and when to dodge/best time to counter. Edit: Forgot to tell about the rest of the story but trust me, its great when it picks up. The characters are great enough to where the main plot can be on the back burner for a good while so it was never really an issue for me. The game does frontload the "boring" quest. Your fetch quest, defeat x amount of enemy stuff like that. After Autumns Rise, the games killer no filler! You start getting more interesting quest like parkour challenges, hunting legendary beast, making drinks with ice hockey pucks! They do the boring quest first so you get familiar with the controls... speaking of which... The controls for a PC game are incredible! (Consoles are fine too!) Every other game for some reason has a important button on CTRL but here everything is in reach! The character is nice and responsive! Combining that with the fast paced gameplay and you got a top down indie game that plays like DMC! There's a whole lot more I wanna talk about but I think I'd be yapping too much. Instead I wanna leave with a few tips -Upgrade your gear. Your gear being up to date is important and you will be steam rolled without it. -Remember ricochet and the puzzle mechanic you're dealing with. I've spent a little too long brute forcing a puzzle just to realize (oh wait I need to give myself more time by doing X and Y first before doing Z.) The highest praise that I can give this game is that I'm jealous that people are experiencing it for the first time.

CrossCode is a Retro-style RPG in pixel art. Visually it's ok, rather detailed, but I deplore a lack of personality. For comparison, Sea Of Stars and Chained Echoes are well above that. In terms of gameplay, we are dealing with rather nervous real-time combat with various elements to master which are unlocked throughout the adventure and which are cleverly well used. The originality lies in the possibility of shooting your enemies like a SHMUP. Story-wise, it’s really really slow and not gripping. The story doesn't really progress until +30 hours of play, during which a supposed mystery is created while explaining nothing to the player. Good storytelling isn't about not explaining anything for half the game, then explaining everything at once ! And it’s not the characters that raise the level. Imagine that an enssencial part of the events is based on the fact that the heroine cannot speak... but why doesn't she write ?! How can the relationship and events be defined by something so stupid... The story takes place in an mmo and the game adopts all the bad aspects. The game doesn't give you anything that makes you want to move forward. As I said, it never explains to you why you do things in order to maintain some sort of mystery, so much so that you lack real motivation. I felt **** so many times between continuing the game only because I've already spent a lot of time on it or abandoning it... The soundtrack is exactly the same as the DA. The music is nice and fits well with the environments, but again, nothing that will remain engraved in the memory. The game again gives the impression of wanting to be generic to emphasize its mmo side. And on this subject, let's talk about the side quests... 3/4 of them are FedEx quests which consist of fetching random stuffs and bringing them back for mostly uninteresting rewards. Note that certain difficult quests are repeated in each new area. This is honestly the worst thing dev's can make for an rpg. If the side quests are the big downside of the game, the dungeons and puzzles are on the contrary its very strong point. The puzzles are well designed, the dungeons are substantial and the bosses are very well thought out to make use of the new mechanics and powers. Overall, the game isn't very easy, but it's not difficult either. It is not unpleasant to go through but the fact of wanting to imitate an mmo without being one, makes it uninteresting to go between the dungeons, to the point of giving the impression of wasting your time. Plus, there is a big problem of balancing between the number of uninteresting quests to do for XP, the rewards of these quests, the level necessary to be able to advance in the adventure and the osef items that the numerous merchants offer. My credits are useless. About performance, the game apparently suffered from framerate drops 4 years ago. A patch was supposed to correct this. Well that obviously hasn't been done because the slowdowns are still there. Hard to excuse for a game of this scale... Sloppy porting?... Finally, CrossCode is neither good nor bad. The dungeons, the puzzles and the fights are well thought out, but that's not enough to make you appreciate the dozens of hours of having to go looking for trinkets here and there for uninteresting NPCs or the ABUSED skill tree. This is an overrated game and I'm asking if people who thing the story is brillant already played an Atlus game. Their head will explode.

Worst controls ever for a game that gets the fluffer treatment so often. Imagine if you will, an overhead *platformer* where you control Data from the Goonies while wearing his Slick Shoes. It's that bad; character slips and slides everywhere. They make you do trials built around platforming by programmers unable to accept platforming isn't a genre they're especially skilled at. This game tries to do too much, and sadly you can see how it could've come together. Instead, shoddy controls, lazily programmed enemy AI, and a stick shooter you can't adjust your cursor speed on make it more of a chore than entertainment should be. There's good here. Unfortunately it's buried under far too much bad to make it worth digging for.

Crosscode is pixel art RPG that gets a lot of things right with some major caveats. Firstly, I loved the story. The characters and twists made is so compelling. With the story being something very personal and a life experience instead of 'saving the world' cliché, I really wanted to know more. And Emilie is simply the best character The pixel art and animations is amazing also. I think its more of a 32bit style having such detail and expressions. I appreciate that they removed the major grindy issues of this game as some "MMORPG's" tend to have The combat is engaging. There is a some button mashing enemies but you have to plan and find weak points in attacks. However there was some major downfalls on this game for me: - The dudgeons. They should be a high point but they were just so long. With some puzzles requiring perfect timing and with so many rooms, it just broke me as it because such a chore. - The balancing between zones. For instance, in the first zone you fight enemies at level 11 and could be level 12 by the time to move on. But find the enemies in the next zone to be level 16, why the 5 level gap between zones? - I know you can adjust the difficulty in the game at any moment, as I found the game very difficult but the precision needed to shoot key areas to progress is too tight and became very frustrating. - Being a top-down game and lack of depth perception I wonder if the platforming had to be such a regular occurrence due to the amount of falls - Unlike MMO's the opportunity to find great loot is so sparse and you will end up buying gear from vendors. Anyone that play MMO's know that is not what you want to do. It took me 45 hours to get though but feel it could of been a 30 hour experience and suited me better. It's a great game and expected something different then what I got. Recommended for the gaming enthusiasts out there that love huge dudgeons and a challenge.

I liked this game enough to buy it twice; a console version was too enticing since I wasn't big on the PC controls. If I have a preference between the two, I'd pick the switch version, hands down. Pros Great Music Decent Story Appealing Graphics Tight Controls Cons Forgettable Characters Puzzling Fetch Quests The controls and level scheme allows for some replayability. You can choose to be melee, ranged, or a hybrid of the two. You can switch up what elements you focus. And while run of the mill quests and characters are disappointing in a beautiful game and a solid main story, the main draw to Crosscode is the combat and puzzles. Puzzles are hard to the point where it can slow the playthrough down. That can be a good thing--but if you ever take a break from the game, you will have a hard time picking it back up because of all the nuances involved with each puzzle, whether it be platforming or objects you interact with. Combat has a satisfying level of difficulty as well. All in all, a super solid game that translated very well to the switch.

After 50 hours, I completed the game, and I feel the need to lower the initial rating I gave it. I think the first part of the game is really good, but after that, the entertainment value and quality declined. I actually came close to quitting a few times along the way. Most of the side quests became too monotonous and boring. The dungeons were confusing and not exciting, and I often just wanted to get them over with. As others have mentioned, there’s a really annoying issue with the platforms. You stand on a platform thinking you can jump to another, but after you jump, you realize it’s far too high to reach. In my opinion, they should have removed many of the side quests, shortened the game, and improved the dungeons. I got the sense that the developers lost focus as the game progressed. That said, the game does have a good story and is easy to control. It’s also a budget-friendly game, and if you’re a big fan of RPGs, it might be worth a try. But I can say for certain that I won’t be playing it again.

I had some doubts about this game but after 1-2 hours my opinion changed. It's beautiful, deep and interesting. Story and the characters are amazing. Surprisingly one of the best games I've played last couple of years.

This game is utterly terrible. The map and navigation system are awful and you rarely know where to go and cannot find any help to figure it out. The music is likewise terrible (who developed this game??) and how any of this mess made it past QA, I have no idea. Cash grab?

Mediocre game with abysmal controls.
The core gameplay of needing to switch elements on the fly combined with the hands down worst button mapping possible makes this game a pain to play. You need to dodge attacks all the time and swap elements very often. Both is done with the left thumb. Why they thought that is a good idea, is beyond me.
If you really want to play this game - and I couldn‘t imagine why you would, it’s nothing special - try it on another system.

When I bought the game i never thought i would spend 80 hours on it. I really appreciated the story and the characters involved. The gameplay IMHO is the perfect modernization of the 2d top down Zelda Like games: faster combat system and amazing dungeons with a perfect mix of puzzles and fighting rooms. The only flaw that it seems relevant to me is that during platforming it is not always clear which platforms are higher and which are lower. This is bit frustrating initially, but then I got used to it and this didn't affect the global experience.

A common thread among negative reviews of CrossCode seems to be the difficulty of the puzzles and the level of precision they require. Personally, I think that represents one of this game's main strengths: At no point during my playthrough of this game did I feel like the game was holding my hand. It treats the player with respect and never insults your intelligence. On the contrary: it demands that you learn its mechanics, and it is the first game I've played in a long while that had puzzles that felt challenging. Not cheap, not unnecessarily time-consuming, but challenging. The Switch version does seem to have stability issues. Moving in a way where your party members can't keep up can cause the game to lag, as does having too many particle effects (which, given late-game AOE attacks, happens very easily) and the game tends to crash after cutscenes, especially towards the end (this doesn't cause any significant loss of progress, since the game autosaves before cutscenes). Everything else, I would say, is unquestionably great. Whether you like it or not will come down entirely to taste. The art style is great, the characters are believable, the story does what it needs to do, the music slaps, and the gameplay is as polished as it is demanding. 9/10 A great experience all around but the Switch version specifically has its weaknesses.

Hard to find something I don't like about the game. It looks gorgeous, it is pleasantly tough, keeps you busy for hours, and amazingly, the story is really good. If you know your SNES games, you will be remembered of the classics, and also how much CrossCode is its own thing. Current version of the game crashes occasionally, and some graphic-heavy areas cause the game to stutter a bit, which gives me a slight headache. But that won't stop me from praising the game - I just like everything else so much.

A very competently made game which gives the feeling of the developers completely fulfilling their vision. I found the combat to be a little too fast-paced, but also enjoyable. There are some minor performance issues at unexpected times (navigating the menu even), but they don't often impact the game play so weren't really an issue.

An impressive Zelda-like experience well worth playing. The story is very well written and the controls are tight. The platforming and puzzles are fairly challenging and satisfying, but can be a bit confusing due to the isometric level design. The game also has an interesting New Game Plus which is further enhanced by achievements, making the game a lot more replayable as well. For the cheap price, the game offers 20+ hours of content and lots of replayability, which makes it nearly a must buy. I do wish the performance issues were fixed though.

I'm only a couple hours of play into the game, but I'm loving it so far. The trailer ad gave a great representation of the game. It's fun to play, reminds me somewhat of the gameplay of Ys 6 and Ys Origin which I really like. They did a lot to make the game pretty with the pixel art, and the characters running around are extremely diverse and cute. The music is top notch, too! This game also has a fanciful skill tree and some depth to the combat. Lots of collectible things to search for to trade up for items and equipment which I like. The dialogue and characters are funny and silly. I'm good with serious stories, but I like wacky ones a lot, too. The price is excellent; I'd have been perfectly fine paying $5 or 10 more.

Positive: - Very well-written story, characters & dialogue - Solid mechanics, controls well - Challenging and varied puzzles, with adjustable difficulty if necessary - Good graphics, SNES feeling done right but goes further than that - Music score ranging from good to excellent - Interesting New Game+, both a good second read as well as a different experience, with options to massively speed up grinding/farming - Reasonably long play time (~52 hrs main + extras for me, +~37 hrs 100% on NG+) - Achievements enhance New Game Plus, making them more than just bragging rights - Filled to the brim with nods and references, lots of humor - Hi! Negative: - Some difficulty spikes, mind your equipment - Crashes every so often, though the generous auto-save means you should lose at most 5 minutes of game play - Isometric art direction makes platforming somewhat confusing at times; tip: use the VRP aim guides to check platform heights - 100% may require some grinding - Minor performance issues, some areas make the game chug a bit

Top RadicalFish exzellent gemacht

When i first started the game and played the first two chapters, it was 10/10 for me. Intriguing story, fascinating characters, gorgeous world design and a fun gameplay experience. Then the game started to show its problems, and one of these problems eventually ruined the overall experience for me. This game has one of the worst pacing issues I've ever played. Once you completed the first dungeon, it just drags and drags, everything becomes such a chore to finish. For example: - there is a main quest later on where you have to take down a pillar-shaped enemy. Every time you destroy one pillar, it just generates one or two more, and every time you destroy all the pillars, it escapes to another map and you have to repeat the same thing again. And you have to go through multiple maps to finally beat it. - the "pvp" missions, why do I have to win all 5/5 duels? normall if I win 3/5 i am already a winner. especially one of the pvp duels against one specific character, even after you won 5/5, that character just keeps going and asks for yet ANOTHER duel. - the second the fourth dungeons, there are just so many puzzles and so many rooms. I love puzzles and I like most of the puzzles, the problem is not about solving the puzzle, it's about the awkward platforming and aiming mechanic. 99% of the time, I absolutely know what I have to do, but it takes me forever to aim it at the EXACT correct angel, or have to run all the way back to the start point of a puzzle because I misjudged the fake 3D platform (the one you think you can jump onto but it turns out to be higher) Even the characters in the game are making fun of how boring and tedious the game can be, at least the devs are self-aware. I really had to take several hiatuses from CrossCode to continue. At one point, I basically stopped caring for the story because all the dragging missions were so annoying to go through and they totally interrupted the progression of the story. The bottom line: - if you just want a puzzle game, this game is not for you. - if you just want an action RPG, this game might be for you. - if you just want a decent story, this game might not be for you. - if you hate puzzles, this game is definitely not for you.

The devs are bad and mean. The game was released on Newgrounds, but only as a demo! The game is better suited as a flash game from what I experienced from the Newgrounds demo (I don't own it), and it should have been full game on Newgrounds. Play the demo, and see if you like it. >:-(

Tight platforming and combat, satisfying (if challenging) puzzles, and only a sprinkling of grinding (for the completionists; entirely optional). The story is intriguing, too. Obviously gorgeous with a nostalgic-though strong-score. I'm 19 hours in and hooked.

Crosscode is a lovingly and deliberately crafted Action JRPG experience featuring vibrant pixel art, likeable characters, beautiful music, nail-biting combat and cerebral puzzles, all in a dense, lore-heavy JRPG package filled with content, secrets and sidequests. Few games achieve what this game sets out to do, and fewer still do it so well. Everything is perfectly paced and well-designed, and puzzles neatly ramp you up to that "a-hah!" moment. Every map has a secret, some requiring you to backtrack. The game has a very deep bestiary rivalling the best like FFXII, and a rich but cleanly executed loot trading/item crafting system. Crosscode out-Zeldas some Zelda games, and provides the exhilaration of Hyper Light Drifter's combat, all wrapped up in a nice and comfy JRPG blanket. At USD20 for easily 60-80 hours of enjoyable content, this game is a must get for fans of the JRPG genre. What an excellent game. I love it deeply and can't recommend it enough.

In some ways this game outshines even the Zelda series - it's among the greatest and most underrated games ever made. As someone who's spent 35 years playing & 30 years developing videogames - I personally recommend CrossCode as a "must-play" for anyone who appreciates Zelda-like games. It's the kind of perfectly-crafted work I *wish* I could create or even just contribute to. Hats off to the developers.

This game was unknown to me but I am so glad it came to Switch. It is definitely my GOTY so far (LATE JULY). Don't sleep on this one. It is one of the most touching, compelling and challenging experiences you can get with a 16 bit masterpiece! The map system could be a little better but most of the bugs at launch have been patched as of this time. In fact, the second patch dropped today. Well worth your time for 20 bucks.

If you ask Alexa for the definition of overrated, Cross Code will be it's first pick. This game has terrible gameplay mechanics. My right arm began to hurt from how long you have to hold the right stick down, combined with how you have to SLOOOOWLY correct your aim. It helps little that the aiming reticule has two settings: move at the speed of a dead grandmother, or ludicrous speed. There is no third option. This is why slowly was in all caps and dragged out. You have to barely move the joystick hair by hair to correctly aim. And the game absolutely requires *tons* of shots where you have to aim perfectly, and it isn't shy about lining up multiple shots like this in a row. Which must be done quickly. Part of this is due in part to the joycons, but the meat of the issue lies solely with the game itself. It's largest flaw is it tries to do so much with such a limiting interface. The old school look drew me, so I'm not one to bash throwback formats. The platforming is abysmal. I got stuck for hours on one side quest bc I could not figure out how to jump to a platform in a time limit. The answer was that a nearby platform, that looked lower than the destination, and thus useless, was actually on the same height level. This was in a side quest, however, which I could overlook I cannot say the same about the temples, as they are mandatory. After doing the first one I immediately began dreading the fact there were at minimum four more. I spent hours doing every single side quest available between temple 1 and 2, simply bc I dreaded doing it. I was not wrong to feel so. Recall the issues I mentioned about aiming and the hair/hairless trigger for aiming? Without giving away any solutions, one such puzzle involved shooting through an ice orb to freeze four water pillars which are cut at an angle. Then you must get into position and wait the one second charge up which allows your shots to bounce. The pillars unfreeze if anyone anywhere on the planet breathes. I'd like to note there's a difficulty setting, for both combat and puzzles, which would increase the time the pillars are frozen. This feels like a cop out via lazy programming; reclassifying bad programming as "challenge". The game goes out of its way to tell you there are difficulty sliders directly from the start. That's a red flag sandwich. It's by default set to max, and most games aren't going to start you off on expert. A flaw becomes game time padding. Ultimately, that's what a lot of smaller issues that snowballed into much more feels like: lazy programming. I'm willing to buy that perhaps it is the Switch hardware, but until I see otherwise, I won't be purchasing anything from this company again. The very few high notes (humor/story) simply aren't worth the torture of playing something made by people who learned to code last week.

My daily routine consists of going through the estore and having a look at what new indie games will hit the switch. To my surprise i saw Crosscode,a game that i have never heard of .Did some research and the game was to my liking via the youtube videos. Game launched ,i purchased it and thought meh i will play it the following day. That same day i got home from work, booted up my switch in docked mode and started playing Crosscode, 10 hours went by and i craved more. The story is well written, the atmosphere of the world is superb. The characters **** you in and you feel involved with all missions. The pixelated graphics is excellent, game play is fun, side missions is interesting and doesn't feel like a chore, upgrade skill tree is interesting . All in all Crosscode is on par with Zelda Breath of The Wild and the only issue is with lag issues in the Menus and when you enter a busy town. Why this wasn't fixed before release i will never understand. Well worth playing Crosscode. Well done Radical Fish Games.

Pure retro heaven but a modern take on it, it's a shooter/fighter JRPG all tied together in a brilliant package, I already double dipped on this with the Switch and XB1 versions, it's that good.

Fun game that hooked me early. Didn't realize how long **** it was (30 hours-ish). Great music, lots of side quests, very enjoyable for the price!
