Braid Anniversary Edition
A lot has changed in the indie scene since Braid first came out, but a game like this never actually goes out of style. While I may not agree with its narrative direction, there’s no denying the impressive quality that helps this game. And, even now, I don’t think that I’ve ever played another game quite like it. Whether you’re a seasoned Braid veteran or a complete newcomer, Braid, Anniversary Edition is an enjoyably challenging puzzle-platformer that’s absolutely worth your time.
Games like Braid are best experienced when playing with little knowledge of gameplay and/or story. While the levels are challenging, this was one of the first games I remember feeling a true sense of accomplishment once each level was completed. It’s an inexpensive title that is worth the price of admission, and if you have played it before and may not be interested in revisiting it, I would encourage you to recommend it to newcomers so it can grow a new fanbase.
What makes a must-play game? Is it adding more levels to an already stacked list of platform worlds from which to collect items? Is adding a commentary you can turn on and off at will worth it? How about re-drawn art? All of those things are here, any one of which could be argument enough for the need of a Braid Anniversary Edition. It just happens that Braid Anniversary Edition is a near-perfect way to try out Braid, if you haven’t before. As someone who hasn’t played before this edition, I think this is a great way to introduce yourself to Braid. Everything looks, sounds, and plays great.

Everything that made the original special, remastered the right way. One button swaps between classic and updated visuals, preserving the core game while making it look dramatically better. The added developer commentary is a masterclass in game design—deep dives into mechanics, process, and creative decisions from Jonathan Blow and collaborators. It doesn’t change what Braid is; it illuminates it.

Braid has some of the most mind twisting and testing puzzles out there. I had never played the original, the reward for figuring out the tough puzzles is immense. I think some of them are very frustrating and can kind of drive you crazy.

A fun platformer puzzler hybrid game. It can be difficult but the time rewind feature helps keep it fair. Graphics look good for a remastered Xbox 360 gen game and it has really quick load times. Only downside I found was that I just don't have the patience for this type of platformer game.

Braid, Anniversary Edition is an essential product for fans of Jonathan Blow’s significant indie game. More importantly, it is a crucial reference point for anyone wishing to learn more about game development. Braid, as an experience, is only enhanced due to the updated visuals, animations, and sounds. What remains is still a game that time has been kind to, one that serves as an essential point in how we consume the medium today.

At only $20, Braid: Anniversary Edition is an easy recommendation for those nostalgic for the original game or anyone that's simply looking for a solid puzzle platformer to play. Braid might not be the industry-shaking revolution that it was when it first released, but it still holds up in 2024, with challenging puzzles and a powerful story. The considerable graphical upgrade would make Braid: Anniversary Edition worth the price of admission alone, but the added content is the cherry on top. If nothing else, it's great to have Braid playable on modern platforms, and hopefully, the game is able to find an even larger audience than it did 16 years ago.

Braid, Anniversary Edition is both a throwback to simpler times and a reminder that indie devs can rise above if given the opportunity.

Braid is undoubtedly a classic that revolutionized the indie game landscape, and it still has enough unique ideas to make it worth a playthrough for the first time today. Whether or not the Anniversary Edition is worth it, however, will largely depend on your experience with the original. For newcomers, the enhanced graphics and extra levels make this the definitive edition, and worthy of a purchase. Similarly, up-and-coming game developers will find lots of love and advice poured into the game’s comprehensive commentary system. However, for those who have experienced Braid before, unless you're itching for a revisit, there may not be enough new content here to justify double dipping. Whether it's the original or the Anniversary Edition, though, Braid is still a game that should be experienced by everyone at least once.

I usually like puzzle games but I didn't like **** many times is kind of hard to know what the game wants you to do.I was about to drop it a few times. Maybe 16 years ago was a cool concept but nowadays I can name dozens of puzzle games that are way more engaging and fun than Braid.

SummaryThe Anniversary Edition is an overhaul of Braid, the 2008 time-bending puzzle-platformer. The game has enhanced sound with new mixes and variants on the original soundtrack, plus an extremely detailed developer commentary track. The commentary track is aiming to be incredibly thorough and, according to the trailer, "If you want to learn ... Read More
