Sonic Colors: Ultimate

I was super disappointed in this remaster since I loved the original Sonic Colors when it came out. I don't think Ultimate is horrible like others are saying but there's still a lot of issues. The graphical glitches everyone's seen on Twitter and Reddit seem to be missing from this version which is a relief. I didn't encounter anything like those at all. However I got something worse. My save file got corrupted. The game froze. The music kept playing but nothing worked. I couldn't do anything to 'unfreeze' it. So I had to restart everything and found my save file was corrupt. I won't lie, for the original Colors it wouldn't be THAT much of a hassle but Ultimate is different. There's a lot of new stuff to do and collect so losing my save really ****. I started over but still. This shouldn't have happened. I also had a couple other glitches like the rails in Tropical Resort not working correctly. I tried to switch rails and it shot me into the air and I died. It happened again and I have no idea what causes it since I switched rails plenty of other times and it was perfectly fine. It seems random. Also had a problem with clipping through the floor in Aquarium Park and Asteroid Coaster. People complain about Tails Saves making the game too easy but it sure is nice when stuff like this happens. But of course the glitches shouldn't be here in the first place... As for everything else, it's fine. People complained about the bloom and the lighting and textures but I think it all looks great, minus the cutscenes. They REALLY should have been redone. There are some things that I really loved and that's the remixes and new Red Star Ring locations. Music is subjective but I like most of the new tracks. They changed around the locations for some of the Red Star Rings to make use of the Jade Wisp and it feels great having to explore. So why am I giving this a 4/10? The original Colors for me is a solid 8/10. Losing my save file instantly made this a 0/10. But... I restarted the game anyway and mostly beat it (still working on 100%) and didn't run into the problem again. I guess it's a very rare glitch but I know other people have run into it too. I feel like just giving it a 0/10 is totally unfair. If I didn't lose my save file I think I would rate the game at around 6-7/10. While I love the new additions (yes even Tails Saves), I feel like it's just not enough, not to mention the other glitches and jankiness not present in the original. So, 3-4/10. I don't know if I can recommend this. I would say wait for another patch. I have no idea when that will happen since Sega is going to be extremely busy with the crazy graphical glitches on the Switch. I'm not sure the PS4 version will be a priority for them which ****.

I revisited this recently since there's a brand new Pokemon Snap game coming out soon. It holds up very well! It's by no means perfect but it's still very enjoyable to play even in 2021. Aiming the camera is a little awkward but it's forgivable since this is an N64 game. My only other major complaint is the length. Even back when the game was new, I felt like there wasn't enough content. More tracks would have been nice. I understand that they couldn't add every single Pokemon as that would require too much work for all those custom animations. I just want more courses. I wouldn't mind repeats of Pokemon, like seeing Charmanders and Squirtles in some brand new forest level or something like that. Other than that I don't really have any criticisms. It's been something like 15 years since I last played this game and I forgot most of the details of the game beyond the most memorable parts. Rediscovering everything felt very satisfying. The graphics are nice for an N64 game. The soundtrack is good although it's got a couple weak tracks but it's generally solid. It's still a good game and I'm really hyped for the sequel.

It's an okay way to waste a little bit of time doing something mindless. The game is very addicting and fun at the beginning when you're still figuring things out and everything is new. The novelty wears off quickly though. I know the art style isn't for everyone but I think it's adorable looking. I really do appreciate they tried to go for something new and stylized as opposed to just using those old Pokemon Ranch models they kept reusing for years. That's where the positives end for this. It has all the same problems most mobile games have. You have limited energy and end up waiting long periods of time between doing anything that's actually fun. I can't fault the game that much for this since most phone games do this because they don't want you breezing through everything in less than a week but for some reason it feels worse in this game than others. I just feel like I'm ALWAYS waiting as opposed to a mix of waiting and playing. It tries to tempt you with microtransactions but it's not as bad as in most other phone games so that's a plus. Still, I feel like Pokemon, the most successful media franchise on Earth, could have afforded to be ever so slightly more lenient with these or maybe even more creative. It's not a horrible game but there's just way better mobile games out there to waste your phone's battery life on and of course, there's way better Pokemon games too.

I basically love everything about this game. I grew up playing a lot of the older Harvest Moon games so this was incredibly nostalgic for me. **** Valley essentially takes the best pieces of those games and mashes them together. I don't really have anything else to say other than that. I only have one complaint and seems to be specific to the Switch version. There are occasional frame rate drops and inexplicable pauses that are actually really disruptive. While walking around the mines, sometimes the screen will just freeze but my character will keep walking, sometimes right into enemies and I wind up dying. It's also caused me to miss getting to sleep on time by a few seconds once or twice. Frustrating but not the end of the world. Overall it's just an amazing casual game. I would skip the Switch version and get it on PC though. The PC version gets quicker updates and has mods, among other things.

I have extremely mixed thoughts on this game. I personally enjoyed probably around 70% of my time playing it. I unironically loved it up through World 6. Everything after that was a mixed bag with World 9 being the last major highlight. There were so, so many times I just stopped and went "...really? THAT'S the best they could come up with? That's it? REALLY?" Basically, I do not hate this game but I don't exactly love it either. First, the gameplay. Honestly, I don't mind it. The patch fixed the movement speed and jump being too slow and floaty so it doesn't feel awkward anymore. As for the controls, I followed the game since the initial reveal back in July 2020 so I always knew what it was going to be like and the issues with everything relying on the same button. I think it's heavily flawed but the level design is built around it surprisingly well so it doesn't really feel like too much of a problem to me. I'm not constantly switching back and forth between powers because the levels are broken down into chunks. You have sections where you fight enemies, sections where you're just running along trying to solve a puzzle to progress, and designated exploration sections where there's very obviously something hidden for you to find and you have to get to a hard to reach spot somehow to get it. They're usually distinct and I only found myself switching once every few minutes. It's not bad at all but still I have to ask... why even have this system in the first place? What was the point? Then there's the powers themselves. There are so many repeats. There's a costume that lets you cross gaps and then three more that do the same thing, although they give you more distance and one gives you extra vertical height. I guess it's cool that there's more useful versions of powers later on but it just feels lazy. If they're just variations of each other then why not have an upgrade system instead? Let me turn my Air Cats into Frost Fairies or something. There's no point in having both. There are some creative powers such as one that lets you detach your head and fly around and one that lets you teleport to large gems but there's not that many like them. I like the amount of options they give you but it still seems a little underwhelming overall. More about the level design, I actually think it's well done. In general the collectibles are hidden well enough. Nothing ever feels too unfair. There are some costumes that do feel really satisfying to find for the first time like most of the post-game ones as well as Double Jump and Paladin Punch. The visuals and soundtrack are good. I have no complaints about anything though I know a lot of people will hate the cheesy vocal songs. I love them though. It's like I'm watching a really awkward Disney movie and it's kind of great. Last, the story. So it's a platformer and a 90s esque one at that. I wasn't expecting amazing storytelling but I was at least expecting more than what we got. Nothing is explained at all. I don't know what the Tims are, what the clock is, what I'm even doing or why I'm doing it, the relationship between the characters and the protagonists, why I should care about these people, why everyone's always dancing for no reason, etc. Nothing at all. There is a novel that goes along with the game but I don't want to have to purchase supplementary material just to be able to understand the basic story. I did read the book and while it was a very fun read, this shouldn't be necessary! Game books are supposed to be for the extra lore, not this. I don't know if they were scared of bogging the game down with cutscenes or what but they could have just made them skippable. No one would have complained about optional content. They don't have to be the big budget prerendered ones, even simple in game cutscenes would have sufficed. They made all these great looking models and even created a fictional language and it's all barely used. I just don't get it. Why? Why ignore all of that? What happened here? There's so many things I like about the game but it feels like for every one thing it does well, there's something it does totally half-baked. I don't know how I feel about it overall. I enjoyed playing this game for the most part but I can't actually determine if it's good or not. That's how conflicted I am about it. A game has NEVER made me feel this way before, for better or worse. I'm giving it a 7. I think it's more of a 6.5 for me but 6 feels too low since I did generally enjoy most of it. I have NO idea what the people rating it 10 are thinking, same with the ones below 5. It's not amazing but it's far from terrible. It's just a painfully average game with a couple satisfying bits thrown in here and there. If you like 90s era platformers then you might like this but just wait until it goes on sale. It's fun at times but not $60 worth of fun

I am a huge fan of old school style platformers and collectathons so I absolutely loved this. I only just finished it last month so it's not as if my score is inflated because of the kickstarter hype from years ago. It really is worth a perfect 10 to me. If you're not a fan of this genre then you're probably going to get bored but for me, this game is incredible. Basically, almost everything is perfect. The level design is great. The worlds and whimsical and well designed. Your range of motion is perfect. Just running around and not really even doing anything just feels... GOOD. It's hard to describe but the way everything controls is just fluid and perfect. There are some glitches here and there but they don't really break the game. Sometimes it's frustrating because they're collision problems and I clipped through something but it was rare. The camera is a little wonky at times but honestly... as someone who grew up with games like this it's not even a problem for me anymore. Fiddling with cameras is like second nature to me. The difficulty curve is weird and it definitely spikes later on out of nowhere but it's not that bad. Overall it's just a really amazing game and I regret waiting so long to finally play through it completely

It gets repetitive very quickly and I greatly dislike the crafting system. It can be pretty fun at times though. It's basically your standard endless runner with some beautiful looking graphics. The models all look nice as do the level environments. It's very pretty to look at. It's a lot of fun at first but after awhile it just feels very unfair and a bit too grindy. This is coming from someone who was happy to grind Meowth coins all day in Pokemon Shuffle (another free to play mobile game) by the way. There's always a chance that they will refine things in the future. It's still brand new and they're probably trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, what's fair but doesn't make things way too easy, etc. I think it'll get better in the future. For me personally, I can safely say the game isn't really that good. There's better endless runners out there and phone games in general.

Even though the game is basically dead and not getting updates anymore, it's still very fun. There's enough content to keep you busy for a long time. It's basically just another match-3 game but with some twists in the form of your Pokemon's abilities along with Mega Evolution. It's RNG heavy but at the same time there is a lot of strategy in it, especially in the later stages. I would never call it deep but it's certainly not mindless or "not a game." There ARE microtransactions in the game but honestly? They're not bad at all. I played this game on and off for three years and at no point did I ever feel compelled to actually spend money. I never felt like I had to in order to progress or even do well at a competition. To me that's the mark **** mobile game and one that IS worth spending on. I think the entire time I played, I dropped around $10 and I probably would have spent more if it kept getting updates. It really is a great little way to pass time. The one reason my review score is kind of low despite all the praise I'm giving it is that if you don't want to spend money you basically have to grind for coins and it's boring. I mean, it's better than having to pay but it's still not exactly enjoyable. Having to waste your limited energy on Meowth is not fun, especially when you still have stages left and want to keep progressing through the game. But when you're NOT grinding, the game is very fun.

It's a very cute game but there's no depth to it at all. It has some great ideas that even seem kind of revolutionary (for Pokemon as a series) in hindsight. It's basically a semi-open world, fully 3D Pokemon game with real time fighting and even some platforming elements. Remember this came out back in 2010. Unfortunately it's basically a glorified mini game collection with a simple story added on. That's not really a bad thing in theory but the mini games are very simplistic and things get repetitive very quickly. Same with the battling. Running around in the overworld and talking to other Pokemon is very fun at first but it also gets tiring quickly. There are some wonderful ideas in this game but they're implemented very shallowly. I understand the game is for young children but I feel like even they'd get bored quickly. It's fun to just play for a short while very VERY casually and then put down. Just something nice to relax with as opposed to trying to beat in one sitting or even fully complete. Just a cute little romp when you're having a bad day.

I absolutely adored this remake but it's still got a small handful of problems, especially the Steam version. I'm not sure why but the game has issues when you try playing at 60FPS and it never got patched. For instance, the flight and speedway levels become significantly more difficult for whatever reason. When playing at 30FPS, they are a breeze to beat to the point where you end up lapping the other racers. Another well known glitch the ledge in Alpine Ridge that an enemy continuous moves up and down. When the game is set to 60FPS, the ledge is never lowered. These weird glitches were very very frustrating my first time playing through since I didn't know what was going on but they were easy to fix. Still, if the game wasn't meant to be played at 60FPS, why give us the option...? Not to mention, the game might be aimed at people like me who grew up in the 90s but it's also for little kids too. I'm not sure they'd be patient enough to look up how to fix the problems (or even be aware they /were/ problems and not intentional level design choices), same with their parents. There were some other problems I encountered like the shooting sequence of Dino Mines glitching out along with one or two of the mini games in Spyro 2 but ultimately the game was very solid and relatively glitchless. Everything else about this was wonderful. I know it sounds like I just whined a lot but I feel like it's important to point out those problems. To be honest, I think I prefer the originals but that's purely because those are even more nostalgic. If you didn't grow up with those games but still want a 90s platformer with a lot of modern quality of life tweaks and absolutely BEAUTIFUL graphics, then the Reignited Trilogy is just that. I am giving it a 9 but more realistically it's like an 8.5 for me. I feel that 8 is just too low.
