Seemed to me that every time there were Ford three-piece-suits on the screen the movie went to sleep. Somehow the movie lost track of the real fascination of building a Le Mans winner. But anything with Bale in it is mandatory viewing for me.

Terrific story about a very exciting event and an extremely capable woman, but the movie just seemed to me like a boring collection of fuzzy at-sea short takes, and Twitter length interviews. Almost like a puff piece for Tracy Edwards. When her boat finished the race at Southampton, accompanied by a huge flotilla of fans, I assumed she did quite well in the race. In fact she finished 18th out of the 21 boats that finished the race, and about 40 days behind the raw time winner. The movie gave the impression that throughout the race Maiden was contending for the lead. All the other boats were treated like chopped liver. (Not a spoiler because the movie never goes into this, but Wikipedia does.) Even as a documentary, there should be a better way to present an exciting sea story other than a collection bland eye witness comments by a middle aged group of nice people.

I'm a dedicated Phoenix fan so there is no way I would miss this movie. But I didn't have the slightest thought that it is some way it is related to the Batmans. Arthur is as stand alone as you can get. And, to me, Phoenix's magnificent performance is as stand alone as you can get. Loved his dancing, which was enhanced by his self-made skin and bone Fred Astaire physique. The only thing that bothered me was Arthur's chain smoking. I don't think all that smoking had made any dramatic contribution to the movie, but it did give me the impression that the incessant smoking was a proxy tobacco industry advertisement. Maybe intended to encourage young vaping addicts to switch to the real thing.

Strippers rolling drunks (or drugsed). More male appeal than when alley rats do it. No Lopez, no movie.

The visual conversion of Bale to Chaney was certainly a masterpiece. But the resultant character had zero screen personality. A boring emptiness. If that is what Cheney is really like, I would have preferred that the central character be George W. or Rumsfeld, both of whom had substantial personalities. Even Lynne Chaney would have been a better choice. I'm a big fan of Bale, and to see him mummified by the Cheney persona was a disappointment. The role could have be played with less bother by any chubby actor who could monotone grunt very short sentences.

Just saw it and I felt I was sitting thru a couple of hours of schmaltz. If we aren't looking into Armstrong's eyes, we are looking at his wife's eyes. At least she had a part to play, and did it well, where as Gosling/Armstrong part was to look and act like a statue of an astronaut. And it's hard to give much credit for astronaut risk and bravery at a time when 50,000 US military (including 14,000 draftees)were giving up there lives in Vietnam.

I went to see it because of the good ratings. But the acting and dialogue were poor. The story-line lacked a backbone. The movie was filled with two things, Natalie Portman frowning and shooting her AR-15, and second rate CGI. I think that the plot was defective because you never could get a clear vision of the adversary. It just seemed like an amalgam of random special effects and strange uninteresting life forms. They even threw in some generic sex scenes that had just about nothing to do with the plot (and almost nothing to do with sex). The last time I saw a movie this bad was "Lobster".

This is one of the best movies I have seen in long time. It is a true "dying of cancer movie" but without the morbidity and false expectation you see in others in this jonrah. It's hard to get morbid about Julian's ending because he works hard at more or less trivializing it, with much humor, and a devilish personality.

Just saw it This movie may have a humorous premise but in my view the movies is about cruelty Who will remember a funny line from a movie filled with misery and gratuitous savagery. All the Comedy Central standups couldn't jovialize a scene where a nice pet dog's body is found lying a in pool of blood and guts. But, in all fairness, the nearly robotic (think dog on dog) sex scenes may be remembered simply because they are sex scenes, The cruelty is not novel to the plot. Cold, viscous, amoral characters are a dime a dozen in the movies. Come to think of it, a live lobster being boiled to death is a decent metaphor for this movie.

Just saw it. I went because of the very positive reviews. I thought it was more like a very well done short story, than the saga I expected (just my own expectations). Lot's of very good acting and dialog, but I think it was a tremendous showpiece for Ms Ronan's talents, and her beautifully expressive face. I did think that happy ending with her returning from Ireland, where a deep and interesting romance was just budding, and flopping into her Italian American husbands arms, was too simple and abrupt . I guess I just thought the Irish man was a better match.

Nick Nolte was good enough to garner an academy award nomination if he had a better foil than Mr Redford. Some reviewers hinted at it but out of respect for Mr Redford, none would simply declare that he can no longer act. Mr Redford's character had no dramatic presence, either spoken or visual. On the other hand there was no approximation of Mr Nolte's character. In the theatrical sense his every word, twitch, and eye movement was honest to a very entertaining character. Might even say that the movie was close to a Nolte/Katz soliloquy, and a good one at that.

This is one of the most memorable movies I have ever seen. Don't know if it's the right word, but to me part of its quality is compactness - no frills, just the story itself. I have literally no knowledge of the German language, but the acting was so good you could almost anticipate the captions. In my view the ending was spellbinding in its drama and beauty. Maybe one of the best endings of all times. Really a shame that this movie will probably not be available to wider audiences. Thank you Sundance.
