Her Story6
Jan 30, 2026
This isn't a game, but it doesn't pretend to be. It's more like a one-woman play (with superb acting). Unlike The Operator, it's contemplative and self-paced instead of vomiting at you like a bad visual novel. It's very intriguing, enough that I was totally invested and reflecting on it long after, but there isn't much to actually do, let alone last you more than a single play session.

Return of the Obra Dinn10
Jan 29, 2026
The game that got me into investigative games to the point I call them "Obra Dinn-likes." I've yet to find another game that drops you in the middle of an immersive environment and sets you lose to uncover its compelling mysteries in your own way. It may very well have ruined all similar games for me.

The Roottrees are Dead9

The only true "Obra Dinn-like" I've found. A very well-presented mystery that's fun to fiddle around with. Its premise and characters are amusing but not particularly compelling, but it will definitely scratch the same itch as Return of the Obra Dinn.

The Rise of the Golden Idol7

I don't like the story or characters as much as the first game. It's much more of the same, which certainly isn't a bad thing, especially with usability improvements. However, brute-forcing the puzzles gets easy fast.

The Case of the Golden Idol8

The puzzles are challenging enough, but I especially like its indirect storytelling. There's a whole wealth of character development and continuity you get to speculate on and deduce yourself. And it's short enough that each puzzle feels fresh.

The Operator2

A very engaging concept that's done a disservice by its short runtime, superficial puzzles, linear story, and excessive dialogue. It needed either way more time in the oven or an altogether different medium. Though I do appreciate the little touches, like the multimedia clues, voice acting, and computer terminal.
