I'm sorry, but finding somewhere that a key fits into that then unlocks another key you've got to find somewhere for it to fit does NOT constitute a puzzle game. Despite it's time travelling element, this is on the whole a frustrating and unrewarding experience

What Little Nightmares 2 has done, is take all that frustrating half baked mixture of platforming and puzzling from the first game, and intensified the mindless game breaking aggravation of Death by Trial and Error to a point where there is a cut off limit of 4 minute gameplay before smashing the controller repeatedly on a hard surface. A lot of work for little reward.

What am I missing here? This just ain't happening for me. Reams of static scenes reading endless streams of dialogue **** knows what. Moving from place to place and interacting with objects and NPC's an absolute joke.

Filament

Lets be honest, if a Puzzle game is a breeze, then what is the point, and, yeah, some of the Puzzles in Filament are real brain bogglers that will have you stumped for hours, but then again, if you didn't want a challenge you wouldn't be considering this purchase would you? Suppose the question is, how much pain can you take before it's no longer enjoyable. You WILL need quite a high pain threshold to get through this game. You have been warned. The game puts you aboard a Spaceship, with crew missing. What happened to them? What is the purpose of the ships mission? As you would expect, the story unfolds as you solve sets of Puzzles based on the simple mechanic of connecting circuit pillars in a set order using a filament of electric wire. Simples right? Once the rules of Puzzle sets click, then the solving of them are a beautifully fluid sweep of the controller to solve that takes seconds, whilst others are rage inducing head ***** that take hours, including several rest periods, to solve. The real beauty of the game is that scratch the surface, and layers of puzzles within puzzles will be discovered, much like the awesome "Witness" an enquiring mind will find a lot to keep it occupied. I came for the Puzzles, but left touched and intrigued by the well written story line and character relationships. In the final analysis, there are an uncomfortably large amount of Puzzles, and that can be overwhelming. But that aside, if you like a Puzzle challenge I recommend this wholeheartedly.

Best thing about Call of the Sea is the overarching story. As a puzzle game it blows hot and cold: first half of the game the puzzles are interesting, but descending into a mixture of illogicality and easy peasy lemon squeezy. None of the puzzles however are unique or different to any we've seen in other games. The format however is refreshing, a kind of combination between a Point and Click /Adventure/puzzle game. Like others here, I experienced some glitching and needed to restart a new game at one point An interesting title that's probably worth a play through.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

This is the first Tomb Raider since the first one that comes anywhere near close to capturing a sense of wonder and discovery. Stepping into the unknown and unexplored space of Ancient Tombs and Crypts is thrilling. However...(you knew this was coming right?)...what you end up discovering in those wonderful spaces are dull boring and samey.. More often than not, your exploration will be rewarded by a skill or gear upgrade. Bearing in mind that the TR skill tree is utterly pointless, none of the upgrades makes a blind bit of difference to the gaming experience, this makes the end result meaningless and unrewarding. The best bits of the game can be found away from the main story line with side missions and general exploration, and especially where things get a little freaky, the worst bit is mashing the "survival instinct" button every second making sure you're not missing some pointless item or resource. A little bit shocked just how easily killing and dealing with death comes to Lara. She seems to have no compunction in piercing someone with an arrow and hanging them from a tree or stabbing them in the back of the head. . This is an angry obstreperous Lara, brimming with angst and worry. I mean take a chill pill, do you not have THE best job in the world: travel to exotic places discover ancient treasures and artifacts. Where is your joy Lara? There is little or no fun in the gameplay. It takes itself so seriously.

The White Door

An excellent addition to the Rusty Lake/Cube Escape games. For those who already know the Rusty Lake universe will know that these seemingly simple Point and Click games go far beyond that nomenclature. Deeply eerie and haunting, each game is self contained, but there are recurring motifs characters and imagery that connects them all. In the same way you know you are watching a film by David Lynch, you will know you are playing a Rusty Lake game. As a criticism, the puzzles in these games can be slightly illogical sometimes, but The White Door has really tightened up on this. Writing as always is spot on, as is the use of the graphics in telling a story. If you have never played one of these games, I don't think it really matters where you jump in, but I strongly recommend that you do.

Cool and slick, and a wealth of ideas for puzzles based around the seemingly constraining subject of pedestrian road signs. The Pedestrian is surprisingly addictive and engaging, despite it superficially appearing to be repetitive puzzling, with a nice smooth learning curve that never ends up with the puzzles being too oblique or difficult. Graphics are snappy and intelligent, a nice soundtrack, and a subtle shift in the final puzzle set that is genius. Maybe a bit on the short side, but well worth the pounds in my opinion. One of my top puzzle games of the last few years. recommended

Control

Up to a point, I really loved this game. An intriguing mysterious and Weird story-line set in The Old House, part Secret Government Centre and part Portal into several other dimensions. You play as Jesse, as we uncover her back story she uncovers the whereabouts and reasons for the disappearance of her brother Dylan in a wonderful Lovecraftian/Prisoneresque action adventure: Guns, Levitation. Telekinesis and Mind Control abilities combine to make this a supremely fun game. What I most liked about the game, was the fact that quite early on, I seemed Godlike in my abilities, and getting to learn to use them wisely and upgrade the abilities I felt comfortable in, made me feel ahead of the AI. Sure I died a lot, either because I was rushing or being stupid, or had to learn a different approach to different enemies, but always felt I was in Control (...see what I did there?). There was a point in the game where that disintegrated. Some of the optional Control Point Bosses were just frustratingly horrible to fight, losing all the action momentum it becomes suddenly like taking on a Dark Souls boss: wading through endless trash mobs to get to main fight only to be oneshotted once you get there. The end game also seemed to take a sudden difficulty spike, and had me roaring at the monitor in anguish and frustration. Not Fun. Despite this short coming it was overall a blast to play. Seven and a half outta ten

Outer Wilds

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion..." Outer Wilds is an absolutely astonishing game. The sense of awe and wonder that rewards exploration is unparalleled. A solar System populated by Planets full of Other Worldly beauty dread, mystery and Alien tech, that will have you aching to return to so you can learn a little bit more each time, to gradually expose more of an over arching central mystery. If you are reading these reviews because you are not sure whether to buy this game or not, be aware that this is not a linear game of exploration. There is no central "story line" that leads you through the game the kind that you might find in the Tomb Raider reboots, and as such, the first few hours may seem directionless and meandering. Also, it is not easy. From handling a Space craft, to moving on the surface of a planet, the puzzles and understanding how to manipulate your environment is something you are going to have to learn on your own. No hand holding here. I am not going to lie, I went to the internet on a couple of occasions to look at a guide, and rather that spoiling the experience for me, actually made me appreciate more fully the depth and complexity of this game. If none of the above puts you off, I definitely recommend this stunning game. Don't miss out on one of the most original and best games of the decade.

The Sojourn

User Scorepodzorama
Dec 10, 2019
The Sojourn is a nice gentle puzzler. There is nothing ground breaking about it, and nothing too taxing. Puzzles are all built around a similar theme; a manipulation of Dark and Light by transporting in and out of two alternate worlds, one of which reveals hidden paths. There is a lot of repetition in the gameplay, and although as you progress, there are different dynamics added to change things up, it all stays pretty samey. This is both a blessing and a curse: the riffing on a theme helps the gentle relaxing pastime of puzzle solving, but also means it can be at times empty sterile and boring. There is a backstory which is neither here nor there and some homesy philosophical musings that are just as meh. Half the puzzles are fun to solve. a quarter are frustrating, and the final quarter ( if my maths is right) are a walk in the park. For short sessions of gentle puzzle solving would just about recommend

Superliminal

Superliminal starts strong, very strong. Puzzle mechanics are different enough for it to pique interest. Unfortunately after the third "wake" things go dramatically downhill. Puzzle solutions become more mundane less imaginative and the solutions become less intuitive, which is ironic given the idea of the game is looking at things with a different perspective. The game quickly becomes a Stanley Parable walking sim, which as good as that game is, is not something I signed up for by buying Superliminal. Although the game is short, it ran out of ideas well before the end point, and I was rather wishing for it all to be over about three quarters of the way through. I am sure you can sense my frustration here, because after first half hour I was sure I had stumbled upon a classic game. It is not without some charm and interest, and of its genre it is pleasant enough to play through.

Manifold Garden

Thank you William. We live in a world where we have to quantify an artistic vision and give it marks out of ten which in this instance is totally unfair. If you are any way interested at all in a game that challenges how we perceive our four dimensional space time continuum on a two dimensional screen, then this is the one for you. This is however also a puzzle game, and it is in this that I am marking it an 8/10. Like Manifold Garden itself this is a game of multiple planes: There are some beautiful eureka moments that is characteristic of all excellent puzzle games, but on the flip side, some puzzles leave a sense of having to grind out a solution. There is a freedom to explore any surface, and to fall freely through "space" without fear of death, and to arrive back where you started from, but on the flip side the infinite regression of the World within Manifold Gardens is also restrictive and repetitive. There is a magical beautiful side to the game, but on the flip side it is all hard edges and loneliness. At its best, the game is uplifting rewarding and visually stunning, at its worst it's a puzzle game in search of a puzzle. Ultimately, you have to bow in deep respect and awe at the completeness of this immersive complex World, to drink in its majesty and get lost in its mysteries. Highly recommended.
