Denis Villeneuve is a talented and promising filmmaker, 'Prisoners' being an obvious benchmark. While I'm still looking forward to his Blade Runner sequel I have to say Arrival was a huge disappointment. Amy Adams great performance notwithstanding, this was a ponderous, superficially profound movie that ultimately goes nowhere.

This movie starts promisingly but goes downhill rapidly. In order to buy in to the whole premise a high tolerance for privileged but vacuous people is necessary.

I've got to agree with the other negative reviews. The daughter totally spoiled it for me. I don't know how Gibson managed to act alongside her, knowing how temperamental he {allegedly} is.

There's not much I can add to the other positive reviews really. If like me, you enjoy movies with a bit of substance and an offbeat sense of humor then this might be right up your street.
