Next Goal Wins9

A truly brillant documentary. Even I ever the ardent socceroos man, cheering rapturously at the world cup qualification and the Asian Cup victory felt a large twang of guilt watching the soul destroying highlights of the 31-0 belting. We always pride ourselves on our heroic, against the odds underdog status, but seeing Archie Thompson belt in the goals has gripped me with this illusion. A tenacious Dutch football coach, a shambles of an organisation as well as an assembly of some truly outstanding human beings-spiritual, dedicated and utterly passionate about the game are the ingredients used for Scorsese to weave his magic. The most compelling football documentary this critic has ever seen and a mesmerising examination of American Samoan culture.

'You don't get to decide who lives and dies'...'Yes I do.' For all the ideology, democracy vs tyranny, families vs order and freedom vs dictatorship, I learnt that the war, indeed perhaps the fate of Britain came down to a few nerds in the south of England. While this film lacked the war-laden drama of say 'Munich' or the sheer compelling biographical odyssey of 'The Theory of Everything' this is in my opinion, an intelligent and supposeldly genuine portrayal of Turing ans his team's struggles. While the Oscar nomination might've been a little far fetched, Cumberbatch performs his role with both an uncanny authority and a considered portrayal of the erratic 'tortured genius' stereotype. His homosexuality adds a lot to the intrigue without distracting the audience from the narrative of the war. A simple yet beautiful setting, subtle yet flowing soundtrack comparable with 'A Beautiful Mind.' Perhaps the faithful portrayal of events prevented this film from scaling more dramatic or compelling heights, but I would certainly recommend this to any history or biographical film buffs

Hot Fuzz8

Loved it! Pegg really comes of age after a breakthrough performance in 'Shawn of the Dead. The director uses a combination of diegetic music, short sharp camera shots as well as the recurring motif such as 'The Greater good' to dish up an absolute feast of a police flick. Worth a look if you're a fan of slapstick comedy and old English charm. Tim Dalton particularly excels as the voraciously charming supermarket attendant. The blistering car chases and action scenes are certainly nothing to scoff at either. Quality flick!

'Don't worry-don't worry!' A very entertaining and dramatic film. While I feel as though it dragged on a bit, the ending burst into life. Not quite at the level of 'The Usual Suspect' or 'LA Confidential' but a gritty Scorsese mob dash. Great dialogue, top accents and no shortage of depth into an intriguing period of American history. Recconmended for Godfather tragics-c'mon be a wise guy!

Four Weddings and a Funeral7
Jun 13, 2015
A solid if unspectacular romantic comedy. Not a bad effort by any means and one of Hugh Grant's better performances. I'll nudge it up to seven only because of the vast influence this flick has had on future movies (Death at a Funeral and Love Actually to name a couple). Grant's hopeless romantic character is likable while McDowell plays the part of love interest effectively. Grant's mad group of friends provide the lion's share of laughter while Rowan Atkinson's brilliant irony was inexplicably underutilised. I would hesitate to call this a must-see but would recommend it for aficionados of romantic comedy.

Predestination8

Superb! A weaving plot combined with a sound performance by Ethan Hawke made for a suspense filled experience. While the action sequences were ok, the sublte dialogue as well as the intense characterisation elevates this sci fi flick to something of true note. Slightly repetitive in patches and it occasionally dragged on a bit. Overall, the score, dialogue and plot carries this through. No doubt one of the smarter movies of the decade.

The Usual Suspects9

Chilling, breathtaking and absolutely brillant! While the wheels sometimes shud to a halt with these sorts of mystery flicks the pendulum kept swinging. Spacey was fantastic in arguably his best career performance alongside American Beauty (and House of Cards more recently). This German-American neo noir mystery film combines a chilling soundtrack, intricate but palatable plot, As well as dazzling performances from Stephen Baldwin and Benicio Del Toro. The action sequences are unpredictable if not spectacular while the dialogue is at times, utterly mesmerising. I finished the movie in total awe and with renewed faith in this troubled medium. Kaiser Sose is watching!

Mad Max: Fury Road7
Jun 12, 2015
While I didn't expect Fury Road to live up to the ridiculous amount of hype, I was rather concerned about an action packed if slightly empty first half. Having said that, the action sequences, if not as revolutionary as the Matrix for example were palatable and entertaining. To be fair the plot picked up in the last hour as we saw the dynamic between the ladies as well as Furiosa and Max. Good car chase, funny dialogue in patches-Fury Road is neither a masterpiece nor a disaster, a solid action flick with a few breathtaking moments

Midnight in Paris7
Jun 11, 2015
Real depth! A clever depiction of a bygone era. Hemingway and Picasso are really well presented. A brillant idea, although the film lacked a je ne sais quoi. A little suspense as well as that one 'clutch moment.' Still a fine film, well worth a look

Raiders of the Lost Ark8
Jun 10, 2015
Delightful! Starting off with a rip roaring splash across a South American jungle before venturing through the pitfalls of the Egyptian desert, Han Solo sparkles as the daring and streetwise Indiana Jones. Supported brilliantly by his love interest, he uses all his intelligence and strength to try and evade the **** amidst some breathtaking scenery, Sound plot and special effects which stand up even today. A classic!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail8
Jun 6, 2015
'Nii!' Sir Lancelot dazzles in this timeless classic. A must see but not only for its esteemed reputation. Cleese delivers another hilarious oblivious performance, while the singing score and gorgeous English countryside add to this ironic treasure. A triumph of sharp and clever dialogue over special effects. Even now in a contemporary age of excessive and vulgar dark humour, this movie stands tall.

Mission: Impossible III7
Jun 6, 2015
Par for the course. Lacked the suspense of the second movie or the plot of the first. Saved largely by impressive stunts, disguises, deadpan multilingual dialogue and Simon Pegg. To be fair the first scene in the building complex was 007 worthy. Give it half an hour.

In Bruges8
Jun 5, 2015
Ray: 'Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was ****, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't. ' Colin Farrell's deadpan remarks make for a gritty and at times compelling noir film. Matched up with the wise old head of Brendan Gleeson, the actor uses sarcasm and despondent facial expressions to keep audiences off their seats. Combine this with some gorgeous scenery, an artfully constructed piano score (similar to the Seven Psychopaths) half timbered backstreets, an existential dwarf, risqué romance as well as a dry and tough performance from the the boss Ralph Fiennes and you have 'a f******* fairtytale of a flick.

That scene at Sacre Coeur... even if I'm haven't been terribly fond of romantic movies, this was an absolute treasure to behold. The director uses a dazzling combination of cut shots, frank narration, a wonderfully varied score as well as an intricate plot to deliver a spellbinding experience. Sprinkled with unpredictable dashes of humour and cynicism, viewers of all nationalities should enjoy this post 2000 French masterpiece. 'Le destin d'amelie poulain' has reached dizzying heights bien sur.

The Lives of Others9
Jan 8, 2015
Class! These fine actors give a subtle, understated yet brilliant performance in this historical thriller. A simple setting combined with a palatable yet complex plot, which elegantly glides through the duration of the movie. From interrogations to surveillance as well as delicately crafted dialogue between authority and rebellion, the agonizing intersection between state control and humanity is wonderfully illustrated through language, costume and characterization. While I would question some of the political references which seem a little clichéd, as well as the somewhat swift catharsis of the main character-this film deserves a viewing from any history or German culture buff. In the same bracket as 'Hidden', 'Valkyrie' and the Bourne series. 9/10

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies5
Dec 29, 2014
Average. Billy Collony and Cate Blanchett were not handed big enough roles to justify their immense acting talent. While the battle scenes and CGI were of the top order, a lack of plot and an original ending hampered Jackson's finale. The film laboured through the first half before finally clicking into gear in the tunnel of gold. While I've always been draw to the Je ne sais quoi of both series, the lack of characterisation and sudden plot shifts and even the number of armies (were there really five?) took away a sizeable chunk of the magical lustre. 5.5 out of 10.

The Grand Budapest Hotel9
Dec 9, 2014
Exquisite. Fiennes gives a dazzling performance in this 'comedy; with serious undertones from the war. Stating the obvious: the hotel and surrounding mountains are quite simply breathtaking, gorgeous setting. The interactions between Fiennes, the hotel staff as well as his romantic dalliances all make for a very enjoyable few hours. Comparable to the Cider House Rules and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Anderson takes a complex plot and thrusts out delightful entertainment. Ending was pleasant if slightly clichéd.

Fury4

Below average. The sub standard dialogue ruined what had the makings of a half decent flick. Each scene was awfully predictable not to mention agonizingly repetitive. The lack of a prominent female character really hampers the story, thus the movie is reduced to a juvenile machotalk contest. For all it's grittiness and intensity, the film, particularly in the final scene often breaks away from reality. While I've thenakfully never been in a combat situation, I find it difficult to belive the heroic nature of the final scene, as well as the banter that occurs in the confined space of the tank. Brad Pitt gives a reasonable performance, and the scenery is sound, but those two alone are insufficient to carry this movie. See Inglorious Basterds instead.

(500) Days of Summer3
Dec 4, 2014
Don't waste two hours of your life; watch Walter Mitty instead. Overrated, hackneyed and predictable. This film made me cringe so **** fine actors fail to save a hapless script. Setting is poor and square at best. The time shifts don't have the desired effects as the dialogue is way too repetitive, typical yuppie stereotypes. The whole guy who has no chance with a beautiful woman thing has been done countless times. Music was all right.

There Will Be Blood9
Dec 3, 2014
A superb film. Day-Lewis commands the screen with superb facial expressions and well versed dialogue. Greenwood's soundtrack; particularly 'The Prospectors' is majestic. Thomas Andersen does a superb job exploiting the gorgeous scenery as well as the zoom in shot of the well, way beyond his years of experience. If I had to be hypercritical, I would suggest to things: -Despite the original beginning with no dialogue, the movie was a little slow -The lack of a strong female character (more to do with the story maybe?) Overall, an excellent movie, a classic if not quite a masterpiece.
