Fire Emblem Warriors

I used to love the 'Warriors' games back in the days of PS2, however those titles eventually became boring because each new release only brought new characters and maps, not new mechanics. I have also played the major Fire Emblem titles since Awakening. I'm very happy with the Nintendo and 'Warriors' marriage; musou combat and Fire Emblem mechanics makes this my favorite 'Warriors' experience ever. (Used to be Samurai Warriors). The ability to direct your AI controlled allies makes a huge difference. Instead of mindlessly mowing down enemies, you actually have to stop and think about where to send each hero. The other Fire Emblem mechanics like pairing, rock paper scissors combat advantage, and job advancement add to the experience and make the grind more satisfying. If you like Fire Emblem and have ever enjoyed a Warriors game, you will like this game. You could probably enjoy this without prior knowledge of the FE universe, but having played FE in the past will make the cutscenes and conversations more enjoyable. You don't need to have played a Warriors game to enjoy this one, but if you have you know more or less what the combat will be like. I'm glad I skipped Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U, because I'm now looking forward getting Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition for my Switch when if launches.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Nintendo's decision to bring Smash Bros. to the 3DS family is, in part, smart business. 3DS market saturation is perfectly situated to take advantage of the game's 'easy to play, impossible to master' nature. Many were worried about the handheld port's ability to carry the legacy of fun, fast, and competitive gameplay. In my own opinion, Smash 3DS is a huge success; the handheld experience doesn't feel like it has lost any of its home console predecessor's fluidity and charm. The only component of Smash's 3DS sibling that feels inferior is, understandably, the control scheme. The transition from a full sized controller to the handheld could be a disappointment for Smash's competitive, tournament players. But, for the general population of the games' fanbase; the handheld's control scheme will be of little importance compared to the enjoyment of the core gameplay that if faithfully represented. This isn't a handheld Smash Bros. spin-off, it's the real thing; and I couldn't be happier with it. The game itself is a faithful upgrade from Brawl. New and returning characters, modes, stages, and items combine to make this version feel like the biggest upgrade in the franchise to date. New characters and optional special customization will keep some people arguing over tier lists for a while. I'll just be practicing and having fun with, I think, the best game this year (so far). The Wii U version will give us a more accurate idea of what the 3DS version is really missing out on in a 1:1 comparison of the newest version of Smash. My guess is that the Wii U Smash's visuals will be a new high point for Nintendo, and that the home version will have a more compelling exclusive mode. The two will probably end up being identical complements to me; at home for pretty graphics and tighter controls, and on the go for convenient practice and killing time on the train.

Oh wow, the hate that this game is generating is **** you don't like a game, it doesn't mean that it's automatically scored a 0/10 kids! The negative reviews are probably from people who don't even own the game; trolls come out from under the bridge for these kinds of releases. The most common complaint I see is "boring, grind-fest, you do the same thing over and over." What were you people expecting? Mini-games? Every FPS on the market is repetitive, almost every single game is repetitive. Mechanics are in place, settings that allow you to play the game with those mechanics are in place. You don't play the same level over and over; the levels take place on planets which are each one giant map. You can play the story/strike missions, where you are led through certain areas of the map and certain enemies will be present, or, you can play the free-roam map where you can explore the whole planet while doing side missions. The multiplayer aspect of this game is perfectly integrated. So, here's something people thought was going to happen; "You arrive on Planet A and everyone who is playing Destiny on Planet A is there with you." This wouldn't work with an MMOFPS; yeah idiots, it isn't an MMORPG because an FPS can never be an RPG! The population is split into separate servers for each instance so there aren't more players than there are enemies! Destiny is a great game. It is a fun FPS, with plenty of RPG elements, set in a MMO environment. Before I hit level five I was in a party with two other people (strangers) doing missions together, coordinating against the mobs with voice chat. But, the trolls said that the game is easy, right? Well, games have this thing called "difficulty" where you can choose normal or hard, so by playing some missions on hard, we needed to be on the same page and we were! Wow. It's so strange when so many people 'claim' to have experienced a game that is completely separate from the one I'm **** one that the people I've played with are experiencing. There are so many people on the internet who seem compelled to unleash their self-loathing, tortured souls onto the accomplishments of others. The same is true here, the press will give people out there a real look at the successes and flaws of Destiny; and I predict the average score will be in the high 8 to low 9 out of 10 range. The people who reviewed the game and gave it such low scores couldn't have even gotten 1/4 of the way through the content. (Yeah, level cap is 20; but there are multiple end game raids that will take a long time for people to finish). My score is based on the content I've seen, (up to level 10) combined with my evaluation of the systems in place. Borderlands meets Halo in a persistent world (style of gameplay). Graphics are very good (For a PS4 game). The multiplayer component is easy to use and is very important when completing the end-game content or any content, because cooperative and competitive MP is fun... (Really people, did you expect Bungie to create a virtual-world FPS for you to waste your real life on? ITS A GOOD GAME, so go play a different 'repetitive grindfest' if you don't like it.) P.S. I am mostly a PC gamer, and I haven't played a Bungie game since Halo 2; so I'm not a fanboy or anything like that. This is my actual opinion of the game, which I'm guessing over 200 people (at the time I'm writing this) can't honestly say.

(I'd score 8.5 if I could) I don't purchase a Madden game every year like the hardcore Madden players out there, but every few years I pick one up if it doesn't get bad press. That being said, I'm really glad I picked up this year's Madden. I have played quite a few hours and I really appreciate the newly implemented on-field mechanics. In the past, playing defense meant mashing a few buttons as a lineman and (after practice) switching to the secondary to try to intercept or deflect the pass (in the last version I played (13), the secondary players would spring up unnaturally while going for a pick and the ball would usually bounce off their hands for no apparent reason), followed by chasing down the carrier and nose diving into them (causing a transition into a tackle animation) or hit-stick them. This year, defense is much more fun and engaging. On the line, you need get the jump on your opponent's lineman by pressing (R2) at the right time after the snap, then wait for a button prompt (X or Square on PS4) to perform a swim or power move to get through and into the backfield. You can even push your blocker around then break away to take down the runner with a telegraphed tackle (a green cone gradient showing your tackle range and effectiveness). Also while hitting, you can tackle high, low, bowl over, or attempt to strip the ball by flicking the right stick in the corresponding direction then power hitting the carrier. In the secondary, instead of unnaturally quick jumps timed with the ball close by, you need to hold the jump (triangle) button while the ball is at it's peak. This makes sense because defenders need to SEE the ball and jostle with the receiver for positioning to make an interception. On offense, your QB has loft or bullet passes that can be placed in front, above, or below the receiver, giving your passer the chance to thread the ball or make sure it stays out of reach of those pesky linebackers over the middle. A major offensive improvement is play recognition, you can shift your O-line's protection scheme to pick up left, right, middle, or all out blitz packages. You can also take stock of your receiver's stats compared to their covering opponent, making it easier to exploit any weak defenders matched against your star receivers. The ball carrier has more ways than ever to help avoid and break tackles as well. For example, the (L2) button is like a technical modifier button. By pressing L2 and X right before being tackled, an animation will occur where the runner will spin out of the tackler's arms; L2 and flick right stick left or right and the tackler will try to wrap up the runner but fail because he springs to the opposite direction (juke). There are more but this review is already too long so I won't list them. All of these complex yet intuitive features add up to by far the best digital football experience to date. While everything is smooth and mostly bug free on the field, there are a few things that Tiburon can definitely improve upon in the coming years. Most obviously, the commentary in this game is very superficial. When compared to other popular sports titles like NBA 2K and FIFA, this game is lagging far behind. The play-by-play is bare bones, and instead of focusing on what happened on the field, the talking heads are usually making vague statements about a player's ability. LeShaun McCoy runs in for a 25 yard touchdown, breaking three tackles and making two defenders miss, and we hear about how McCoy is essential to the passing game. There seems to be a real lack of play analysis from the commentary here, but it is a minor scratch on the game's overall polish. While there have been a lot of steps forward in the career (superstar, franchise, owner) mode, I feel this is the only other portion of the game that is a step behind NBA 2K and FIFA. So far in my career (superstar) mode I haven't seen much interaction or advice from the AI coaches. There is a much-welcome XP system, but doing training drills and playing in games seems to amount to just that; practice, play, upgrade, repeat. I'm not sure what else could be added to spice up the system a bit, but hopefully there will be more to come later. (Note: If you are controlling an entire team, you'll need to allocate training time and XP for all of your players, so it is more complex and requires planning) With an A+ field game and sufficient enough game modes, this Madden deserves praise. If you haven't picked one up in a while, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. If you buy it every year anyway, you won't be let down by this year's effort.

Mario Golf: World Tour

This game utilizes realistic golf mechanics, but adds to the game of golf itself. 3x18 holes of semi-realistic and increasingly difficult holes to get you started. Then, you can try the dozen or so different challenges. 6x9 SMB themed holes. Then you can play golf where the winner is the fastest to the end, not the lowest scorer. Try a game of the 'winner is the golfer who snags the most coins.' This is a $30 base game with unlimited re-playability. (And 3 DLC packs over the next two months) Even after you complete every challenge and unlock the hundreds of Mii custom items, you can still test your skills online, against the world. World Tour, brilliant. ~ 8 hours playtime so far. The point is lost only for the lack of a more coherent 'story mode.' (More dialogue options for NPCs could have even worked, there are some really charming ones) There is a single player campaign mode, and there are some great dialogues with of Castle Club members. The campaign serves to unlock content (Mii character equipment, SMB themed 9-holes, etc...) but not much story. Some 'pro' reviewers have docked 20-30% for this reason (Maybe they are upset Mario isn't holding their hand on the links). I think the campaign is set up in a way that encourages player curiosity. It's not a bad thing,I didn't expect this game to have a meaningful progression, it's golf! The lack of story frees the player from linear progression, so if you don't want to tackle 18 holes right now, OK, go play a challenge mode. Also: The menu system didn't confuse me. The bad reviews on the other hand...

(Note: PC Closed Beta Review) Fun to play, difficult to master. So this is the first Trials game I've played. The graphics are decent for an "arcade" title, but the gameplay is what really makes me love it. I noticed a review saying there isn't multiplayer, but there is local multiplayer. Also, the game is designed for one rider on one track trying to get the best time, trophies, etc... So this game is a competitive leaderboard game, try to be the fastest racer or score the most points on the track, etc... I don't know how I missed the previous titles, this is the game I've always wanted to play. Basically it makes you master the physics of a MX bike (or one ATV so far) on tracks that are bursting with imagination. Some of the challenges are extremely difficult, like keeping your front wheel off of a certain part of the track, requiring perfect balance and timing on your part. When you master all of the tracks you have, you can go and make your own. Lastly, the developers have already announced 6 DLC packs, and have been constantly patching and tweaking this game. This is a cult title, you will either play through the courses once (or maybe enough times to get a gold medal) and afterwards wonder why you paid $20 for it, or you spend time to try to be the best and master the bikes and tracks to top the leaderboards, and feel your money was well spent. Also, I guess you could just have fun with it!

Great game, been a fan of Mortal Kombat series ever since I had to pay a quarter to play it. The only problem I have with the Wii U version in particular is that I can't get the character skin unlocks from the iOS version, AND it doesn't look like there will be any DLC for it? I don't believe that WB or NR would do that to us, but as of right now its looking like we aren't going to get any new characters....sigh.... However, off-screen play, shorter loading times, and slightly better graphics are a nice plus for the Wii U version.

First of all, since the launch of this game, the developers have already released a free expansion with 4 new weapons and a bunch of new maps and game types. Secondly, it is the ONLY game of its kind! The learning curve may be a little steep, since like I said, its one of a kind. But the combat system is really great. Imagine you are a poleaxe wielding vanguard having a one on one battle with a heavily armored knight with shield. You take advantage of his lack of movement speed and slash at him from afar, and you will both die will just one more strike. Then you get hit with a stray arrow.....haha. Well, its frustrating at first, but the whole experience is top notch. If this studio outdoes itself with it's next title, it will be AAA....especially if Valve decides to give them a contract. (Fingers crossed)
