Jonah Hill serves up a potentially good film, the trailer was amazing. However it’s dull with very little to show for. If only only the script decided to show us these kids lives instead of telling us on a rooftop scene. I mean the film is literally 84 minutes. Potential but just not there. 50/100

A great way to cap off just a good series. There was really only 2 great films in this series, the rest are good. The emotion in this final installment is high, stakes are high, and the believable domination of Voldemort is realized through the actors portrayal and actions on screen. However, Draco Malfoy’s character was wasted, absolutely wasted. You could’ve had a real raw moment with Harry and Draco, absolutely wasted. 70/100

The Gobblit of Fire adds something to this franchise that it didn’t have before. Conflict between the three main characters, an incredibly entertaining and adventurous Gobblit of Fire, and finally a story of the past that isn’t boring to watch, that has believable weight, emotion, and consequences. As the three main leads get older, they become so much more. A great film. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here. 74/100

Big teaches us a very simple lesson. Cherish every part of you’re life, live it in time. Hold onto your youth, because no matter how much you’d like to grow up, you can’t look past all the things you learn and the fun you have as a child. As an adult, keep that same youth in you. Live life with a carefree attitude, you’ll win more people over if you always have that quality inside you. It works in both realms. The time you have as a child comes once, the time you have as an adult comes to those who wait, great things happen in both stages of life. 79/100

The Cohen brothers hooked me with No Country For Old Men and Fargo, so going into this film I was expecting to like this. It's save to say that I love The Big Lebowski. It's really the absurdity that makes this movie great. The eccentric characters work so well and John Goodman is hilarious in this. Some of the structure seemed muffled and there was some exposition but other than that, this is an awesome movie that's driven by its own self aware insanity. 80/100

Suburbicon

User Score

Nov 10, 2018
On paper, Suburbicon seems pretty unoriginal, if you want to see a masterpiece in this genre then see Fargo, if you want to see a mediocre halfway entertaining film, then Suburbicon is for you. This film isn't the worst movie in the world, it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. There are some bright spots in this. Matt Damon is good with what he's given. Julianne Moore and Oscaar Isaac put on some fun performances as well. The main issue with this movie is the directing and writing from George Clooney. It seems like the Cohen Brothers gave him a half finished remixed script of Fargo and said have fun with it. Suburbicon tries to bring forth a subplot dealing with racism in the 50's that doesn't fit well at all in the story. It's incredibly disingenuous and they don't pull it off subtly at all. The subplots misplacement is unbearably glaring that it's hard to believe that professional film makers didn't notice is worthlessness. My final thought on this film is that all these actions, this plot, this story leads to absolutely nothing. It's mindless entertainment. These characters have no motivations. We hardly know anything about them or why they do the things they do, and in a film like this, that's unforgivable. Brights spots and all, it's hard to get over all the flaws in this film, a disappointing watch and a let down on potential. 45/100

Stylistically, Deep Red does it's job, however all momentum this film could've carried is killed because of that very style. The last act is well done but the rest of the film suffers heavily. Perhaps a different approach to this script would've turned my head. Not to mention John Carpenter probably watched this film before making Halloween, which by the way is so much better than this. I know these types of movies have their fans, but I am not one of them. 48/100

Halloween (2018) opens a new door for a beaten down franchise. David Gordon Green delivers the best film in this series since John Carpenter's original. With Homages and humor thrown in the mix, Green creates a successful, scary, and entertaining movie that can function on it's own, despite some flaws in the fluidity of it's story telling. Halloween (2018) is directed by David Gordon Green and is co written by Gordon Green and Danny Mcbride. These two have worked together multiple times but mainly through comedic efforts, primarily in Pineapple Express. The speculation surrounding these two made sense, but for the most part, they did a good job with this film. Starting with the direction. The three most important things to get right in a film like this is Michael Meyers, the atmosphere, and Laurie Strode. All three of these things were sent into the right direction. Michael is menacing again in this film. He's brutal, lethal, and kills with no reason, just for pure evil's sake. There isn't any confusing mythology surrounding Meyers either. The film retcons all the other sequels and goes back to the basics of just pure evil. Not to mention, the mask in this film is terrifying. The aesthetic: Green captures those October vibes better than any other sequel has before and the score added in by Carpenter and company elevates this film to a higher plateau. Lorie Strode: Jaime Lee Curtis is back in another Halloween movie, but this time she's not running, she's waiting for the evil to return. Curtis delivers an unhinged and emotional performance, the likes of which we just haven't seen in this franchise. It was big for the filmmakers to treat the Strode character right and they did just that. Moving on to other noteworthy topics of conversation, the kills in this movie are so satisfying, however weird that sounds. Green directs a scene that clearly looks like it was inspired by Carpenter where Michael walk around the streets of Haddonfield, entering random homes and murdering random people. The scene looked to be shot in one take, but focuses on the sheer brutality of Michael's evil. A huge bright spot in this film was the character of Allyison, the granddaughter to Laurie Strode. If this character fell flat, then the film loses such a huge factor. However, they casted the perfect person for the job in Andi Matichek, she knocks it out of the park. For the most part the side characters are serviceable in Halloween (2018), my favorite of which include the two investigative journalists that start our story off. They add a level a pure interest into Michael in this film and do not just seem like cast aways, they serve a purpose to this film. With all the things that make this film great, there's a number of things that hold it back from the original, and that' the screenplay. The writing in this film up until the last act is pretty good, for the exception of some pretty terrible characters (CAMERON, RAY, DR. SARTAIN.) The main issue with this film is Dr. Sartain and the direction the filmmakers decided to go with him. It's hard to grasp how David Gordon Green and Danny mcbride sat down, watched the final cut of the film, and thought the decision they made with this character fit in the film. I will not spoil anything but the writing in this moment was extremely underdeveloped and the idea really wasn't sought out at all from that point forward. There are some questionable performances in this film. Judy Greer seemed uninspired until the last act. Toby Huss, who plays Ray, the husband of Judy Greer is not good in this. His character offers noting but stupid lines of dialogue that are supposed to be humorous but fall flat. This may be nitpicking, but the child actor that plays the boy who discovers the bus crash is the worst part of this movie, he's terrible. But, with all that being said, this film delivers despite its flaws. Halloween (2018) is a return to form for this franchise and a film that I definitely recommend everyone go see. It's a fun time.
