Marathon has few good qualities, and the negatives far outweigh the positives in my opinion. The worst offender is the UI. The menus are laid out in a strange way, they look pretty bad, but worst of all is how you can't really tell different items apart at a glance. Two different items can look exactly the same, so you have to mouse over and read the name/description in order to be able to tell them apart at all. The maps are also pretty bad. Most of the buildings' interiors look copy-pasted, and the exterior looks like a mishmash of random bright colors, just like the weapons. At least there is a somewhat cohesive artistic vision, but it feels like that vision is leaning too far into simple blocky shapes and bright colors. The gunplay is pretty solid though, but the time to kill is way too short, so if you are spotted first by an enemy player, you won't have much chance to win. The different shells (characters/classes) are also pretty lackluster. I'm not a fan of their aesthetics, and most of the abilities feel like they lack impact, though there are some pretty useful ones, like invisibility. So yeah, I'm not a fan. I do get why some people like the game, but it's just not for me.

I honestly think this game was an 8 or so out of 10 back when it first released, but the game we have now is a just a shadow of its former self. The game started out with this really nice urban setting, great characters and a pretty nice story, **** some point they decided to shift their focus, and alter that vision in order to appease the broadest possible audience. With the removal of "TV mode" and the sudden shift in setting and story (which feltextremely rushed btw) the game has now become something much more generic and boring, at least in my opinion. They removed what made the game stand out, and it lost its soul.

If you arejust looking for a fun rhythm game, this isn't it. While every stage has you play a standard rhythm game, each one has its own gimmick, and they may start out pretty straightforward and fun, but they quickly become annoying obstacles that make the otherwise fun stages feel more like chores, and some are really tedious. Then there's the issue where if you fail a stage or want to replay it trying to get all stars, you will have to sit though all dialogue that plays at the start. You can fast forward it most of the time, but it still takes way too long to sit through every time you want to retry a stage. Just let me skip that... In summary, the game often just feels like a chore to play, and it really doesn't respect your time. Underneath all the issues is a fun rhythm game, but it's just overshadowed by the busywork and time-wasting unskippable dialogue.

There's so much downtime between hunts, with way too much useless and boring exposition (that you often can't skip either), and the whole thing is just too "cinematic" as a whole. I miss the old days of MH. Back then it was about the combat, which was also better back then compared to this newer style. The game looks really odd usually as well, like there's a color filter on the screen, and everything's just washed out and either too dark or too bright. And then there's the horrible character/palico edit vouchers as usual. It's bad enough that they make us pay real money for editing our characters, but then they also have a limit of how many times you can do it? It's just bizarre.

The story is incredibly good and very emotional. The writing itself is top notch and its soundtrack is also excellent, with songs that complement the scenes well and enhance the experience. Personally I think the exposition could use some brevity at times, however that's just my subjective opinion. It's definitely the most emotional story I've experienced, and I can't recommend it enough.

The gameplay is mostly fine, but it's lacking in most other areas. The music is terrible compared to previous SF titles, and while the graphics are nice and detailed, the character designs are pretty bad. Most of them anyway. The new World Tour mode is the biggest new addition, but it outstays its welcome, and mostly just feels like a grind. It has a story, though it's as generic as they get. This game is plagued by battle passes (or Fighting Passes, as they call them), which makes playing the game feel like a grind, and the rewards are terrible, though that's probably for the better. The game would be so much better if they just scrapped the battle passes, had better art direction and music. World Tour is also an unnecessary feature in my opinion, and the time and effort spent on creating it could have been better spent elsewhere.

What could have been a great new entry into the hunting genre is unfortunately held back by various issues and glitches. The game really feels rushed, and it's still possible to fix most of the issues, but it never should have been released in such a state to begin with. I really do like the karakuri (building) system though, it's a fun new spin on the genre, but in the end I don't think it's something I'd like to see in other hunting games.

It's severely lacking in content, it's completely lacking in optimization, there's too many glitches to list (and when they try to fix them they tend to break things in the process), promises are not being kept by the developers, the quest design is archaic and formulaic, and overall the game is way too heavy on the grind for its own good. Doom (2016) is quality over quantity, while Doom Eternal is the opposite. First off, I will say that I played through the whole game on the Nightmare setting, just so people won't dismiss my review for not having played enough of the game (I'm at 45h as of now). While the single player campaign is pretty fun, a lot of it seems very out-of-place for a Doom game. I'm mostly talking about the various things included in the platforming sections. Some of the milestones are also not working, and the multiplayer has a lot of issues, plus there's only one mode, which is asymetric and has one slayer against two demons. I'm also not a fan of this whole "season" thing where you need to earn enough XP during a specific time frame in order to unlock various aestethetical items such as weapon/slayer skins and multiplayer icons/titles. Anyway, I would probably rate Doom Eternal 5 if the multiplayer got fixed, and they remedied the various other issues such as the milestones, and possibly slightly higher if they got rid of the "season" part and added a DM/TDM online mode.

I had high expectations for Death Stranding, and fortunately the game delivers. It's a very unique experience that I would highly recommend, but it's definitely not for everyone. I guess you could say that about anything, but what I mean is that the game feels very divisive, and is either going to be something you love or hate. The game starts off pretty slow, and at one point I nearly felt like moving on to something else, but shortly after this the game really picked up, and after a while I had trouble putting down the controller since I just wanted to keep going and see what happens next. I can understand the negative reviews this game is getting, but I can't help but feel like a lot of people are giving up on it too soon, which is in many ways the game's fault. I'll just end by saying that Death Stranding is by far the most memorable game I have played in a long time, and although it might be "a game about making deliveries", it's also so much more.

A different but ultimately very enjoyable entry in the EDF series. I guess you could say that Iron Rain is to EDF what Monster Hunter World is to the MH series. It basically has more fancy graphics and a bunch of changes to the game mechanics, but I still think it retains many of the core aspects of what makes EDF what it is. It has a bit more focus on the story elements and cutscenes, and the enemy count isn't as impressive as what you might expect of an EDF game, but there's still a ton of weapons, items and vehicles to unlock, and missions that are very challenging on the higher difficulty settings. Overall, I think Yukes did a great job. Just don't expect Iron Rain to be like EDF 4.1 or 5.

Disgaea 1 Complete
3
User ScoreZeroNova
Oct 29, 2018
Let me start by saying that Disgaea 1 Complete is probably my least favorite iteration of the game, even though they've had every chance of improving upon the game in so many ways. Compared to the newer titles in the series, Disgaea 1 has some very dated mechanics that feel clunky and are not very intuitive, and most of these remain unaltered in D1C, for better or for worse. This is one of the areas where I feel like implementing some of the improvements from the newer titles would have helped, but I guess you could argue that they wanted to keep the original experience intact, except they have made so many lazy changes to the various sprites of both humanoid and monster classes, as well as weapon models, that it barely feels like the same game anymore. For example, instead of manticores we now have skeletal dragons, yet they are still called manticores in the game... They also changed the thief class from the old male version to the newer female catgirl type. Brawlers, mages, and many of the monster classes are completely changed, just because they chose to copy/paste the sprites from the newer titles instead of making HD versions of the original designs. I wouldn't be so bothered by this if we could at least choose to play with the original graphics, but that's not an option. It may seem like nitpicking, but the old character/monster designs is one of the defining features of the original game, and with all the lazy copy/pasting, this game feels more like a quick cashgrab rather than a remaster, and it definitely doesn't feel like the definitive version of anything. At least there's one big improvement over the original game, namely the ability to skip skill animations, although it has to be toggled on or off in the options, you can't simply press or hold a button whenever you want to skip something. There's also a dialogue skip feature which I don't believe was present in the original (holding R2 to quickly skip). It's an OK game overall, but since you'd be so much better off with the PC version (in my opinion), you might as well get that one instead, unless you don't mind all of the changes.
