Friday the 13th: The Game

I'm an original backer, and huge slasher-flick fan. This game has potential, but the devs are not listening. Bugs galore (although a new patch has helped), horrible facial designs and graphics, troll players, exploits and missing content, promised at backing-stage. All issues I'm pointing out were GLARING during beta testing, however, they are just being addressed now -- weeks after the game release at a $40.00 price tag. They botched it, and while they may fix issues over time and do what they promised, the devs have destroyed their credibility with the community.

So this is an interesting game that has a unique concept: you play the role of the heroine Max, a freshman college student, who realizes she has the ability to rewind time. Think “Donnie Darko” meets “Groundhog Day” meets “Brick.” The game begins with Max witnessing a cataclysmic event destroying her town, only to be thrust back into the present, where she witnesses her best friend being shot by the town’s protected and evil rich boy. She discovers her powers and the game takes off from there. If I have one major gripe with the game, it’s that you are just thrown into this characters life, with nothing more than a 8-page “journal” which chronicles the past five years of her life, and briefly touches on friends and foes. The game would have really benefited from a 5-minute intro that explains this girls life and gives a better clue who she is. On the bright-side, wonderful music, voice acting and toon expressions really do draw you in, and after some trial and error, you pretty much get it. I’d recommend this game to any interested in the “Walking Dead” series, as it does have that consequential outcome for the choices you make. Episode 1 (out of 5) is available now, with Episode 2 slated for March. $4.00 an episode on Steam, or $20 for all 5. Pros: Interesting plot and concept Story is fun and “time-travel” is a hysterical tool to turn the table on your opponents with “future” knowledge and manipulation. Very effective emotional communication between characters Wonderful music and voice acting Great lighting and effects on PC Cons: Just throws you into a characters life with zero background. Slows emotional connection between player and in-game characters Graphics are a little stiff (Unreal engine) and it can’t tell if it wants to be a toon, or live-action movie at times. Interface is slightly wonky at first While the “time-travel” aspect is highly enjoyable, it leaves those gaping plot-holes which leave the viewer to ask “why didn’t she just …?” Be prepared to pile disbelief upon disbelief and enjoy the ride

This game is certainly one of my favorite games in the past decade and has a HUGE replay-ability factor. Dont let the 2d fool you ... Excellent graphics, music, sound, etc. etc. Its not an easy game, and expect to die and restart a lot, but I promise you, you'll love the challenge and the list of characters and scenarios. My hat is off to the devs on this one: They really tapped into a creative vein on this one and created one hell ****.

I'm giving this game a very soft 7. I was an original backer, and if can certainly appreciate the independent production of this game, as well as the feedback and communication from the devs. They would literally reply to concerns or comments within 15 minutes of posting. With that said, as it stands, the game is decent (at time of posting) but it is still hampered by numerous bugs and glitches. Upon release, this game was unplayable, but the devs cleaned it up to about 80% playability (without wanting to punch your monitor). Why this game was released with so many known issues is beyond me -- I can only guess it has to do with some type of contractual obligation to either Steam or Kickstarter. I currently have 70 hrs invested in this game, and I'm starting to get a little burnt out. It does become a little repetitive, but only because of the bugs slowing everything down. It's very cathartic bashing zombies heads in after a hard day, but its becomes frustrating when those glitches kick in and slow you to a snails pace, or when a major event happens, but its glitched and you are powerless to make a decision .... Usually resulting in very negative results. Graphics and music are also decent and the maps are fun; however, all maps are pre-written and never change. In other words, you restart the game, same maps, same zombie and enemy placement, zero replay ability factor .... But there are ALOT of maps. This is a real shame, because if the maps were random (or any random events for that matter) this game would have a huge replay ability factor a la Xcom meets Oregon Trail. Right now, this game is going for $20 to $30 on steam, but I think a $12 to $15 price tag is more appropriate. Check it out, if its on sale, or they gear up some substantial DLC.
