Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice6

A pretty average flick. Beautifully shot, it has some great action sequences and some incredible dramatic music, though if you enjoy a movie with an engaging story that isn’t convoluted or interrupted by aimless subplots, this may not be for you. Affleck and Cavill put up some solid performances, shame the characters they were portraying were meh at best (conversely, the antagonist Lex Luthor was pretty great but hindered by Eisenberg’s godawful performance). Would’ve been better if the movie tried to tell us a story of its own rather than cram a bunch of iconic story events from various comic books (TDKR, Death of Superman, etc...) even though it would be better if they were, you know, reserved for the FINALE of the DCEU instead of being rushed in its second film.

What could’ve been such a great experience instead turns out to be by far one of the worst superhero films of all time. Enjoy this poorly written and mediocrely acted movie as you witness such an iconic group of beloved heroes being reduced to a bunch of uninspiring bumpkins as they fight a borderline generic antagonist who somehow manages to be even more pathetically uninteresting than any Phase 2 MCU movie villain. Enjoy the cookie-cutter action sequences and the beautifully crafted CGI that makes a good portion of the film look like a rendered cutscene from a video game on the PS3. Thankfully, the DCEU somehow managed to barely recover from this mess.

A great performance by Sandra Bullock? Check. An incoherent and poorly written story? Check. An absolutely laughable **** ending? Check.

Ugh, wasted potential. I guess the movie has its moments there and then, but overall remains a mediocrely crafted flick. Props to the people behind the makeup, costumes and hairstyling, though.

The lack of Spider-Man may have disappointed critics and polarized Spider-Man fans, but this movie overall remains a blast, at least once you get past the meh first act. The movie’s script is far from anything great, but the solid performances (particularly Hardy’s), the fun action and the humorous Venom-Brock dynamic make the movie worth watching.

The King of Comedy9

To nobody’s surprise, Robert De Niro absolutely kills it as Rupert Pupkin, a deeply troubled individual who cares about nothing more than following his idol’s steps into becoming a universally beloved stand-up comedian. One of Scorsese’s most underrated work, The King of Comedy is both an amusing and disturbing take on celebrity worship.

If you can make it past the lame script and the absolutely godawful performances by the cast, then this may be a decent flick, I guess.

This is the type of film that only succeeds to be amazing on surface level, but not a truly great movie. It’s visually stunning, it’s brilliantly acted by incredible actor Joaquin Phoenix, it’s empowered by the chilling musical score of talented composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Everything in this movie is exceptional except two things: screenplay and direction. The movie is strongly derivative of Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, yet sadly fails at being anywhere near as deep, clever or subtle as either of them. But hey, at least Todd Phillips recognizes good films, despite his pretensions in making a culturally important one.

Deep, gritty, subtly crafted, visually stunning, and elevated by an amazing lead performance as well as a beautiful and haunting musical score, Scorsese’s finest work will always remain one of the finest movies of all time. The 1970’s were such an incredible decade for cinema.
