I like this game, it features an unusual underwater feature which enables 3d movement ( swim up / down ) . This adds a bit more depth to the game (sorry). It is surprisingly well balanced for such an unusual deathmatch model. You could check the amount of players on steamcharts.

Firefall is a pretty interesting game, but that wears off very quick. It's simply because of the bland quests and lack of storyline that eventually you have to wonder "what is there to do in the game?" . However, in a strange twist, the game has stunning visuals ( not graphics), ok gameplay , and not many, if any game breaking issues like are found in some other games. Also, this is a MMO, not a fps, so don't forget it.

A game that has an ok start but turns up to be just another average console shooter port. The story is nice, but whatever good comes of it is slowly eradicated by some very basic enemy AI and the absolute linearity of the game itself. If you expect something special from this game you might be disappointed.

Loadout is a nice game, at least at first. Sadly some weapon/equipment combinations are not quite thought thru, and that means unbalanced. Imagine a rocket launcher guy, right? Not much of a problem, really. Unless he also has double jump, and happens to jump all around you, or over you. How many 360s can you do while aiming with the rifle? And guess what, while jumping the rl is reloading so he can just rinse and repeat. Imagine three of those guys on the other team. No thanks. Also some maps have "holes" you can fall in (and die) and while it might be funny the first 100 times you fall in them it eventually gets kind of boring. I get it , it's funny cause it looks like you can just jump over it, but then you can't. Still, this kind of things are best left out of functional games.

It's pretty good at what it does but it's incredibly short at only 6 levels + 3 survival or so. Yeah , there is some replayability but I wouldn't count on it. I am only rating this so high because it's cheap and has nice graphics ( and no bugs). They really need some dlc's or something.

I am rating this low because such appalling lack of concern for gamers shouldn't go unnoticed. The initial release was plagued by crashes and lag, and the first bug fix introduced a random blur effect bug that is very annoying. The fact they do not care to fix it strait away is very sad. I wish I can say I expected more, but it's not true. After all EA games was voted "Worst company in America". Can't be the worst at something and do good. Oh and I almost forgot: the netcode is a joke. But don't worry, they are working on it right now.

This is a tower defense game where all the fun has somehow been removed or otherwise dissapeared in mysterious ways. The strategy that can be found in such games from time to time is also not present, in it's place a system of unlocks and abilities is supposed to keep the player entertained. I will not go in details, but suffice to say this game does not even come close to my expectations of a phone game.

-1 point for console port interface (and controls) on pc. -2 points for unskippable intro (and ad) that is extra long: do these people know I paid $50 for this? Apart from that it's fine but nothing special. Not even new weapons compared to 2033.

HAWKEN
7
User ScoreNevermind
Feb 16, 2013
Hawken could be described as the embodiment of "average". It does not really stand out in any way, possibly due to the bland graphics, so super foggy to the point that you might imagine the game is taking place underwater. The game modes can be fun, and require team play, but the lack of things such as auto balance, and some unbalanced map design mean that winning a game in Hawken might not be due to your skills, but most likely due to some underlying fault in the map/ mechanics/ balance. Hawken aims to be a hit to the "unskilled" f2p crowd, with level ups to keep you interested, unlocks and cosmetic items, and this comes at the expense of the skilled player, when the team based game modes are full of people generally not helping. Ultimately the game modes are what will either make or break this game. If Hawken does manage to cater for skilled, competitive players, and fixes the little annoyances here and there, it will no doubt become a great game. However, given that these problems do exist, it means more likely the game will be just-another-UT3-game, as easily forgettable as it is was initially exciting.

Serious Sam 3: BFE

User ScoreNevermind

Serious sam 3 offers some great gameplay moments, but after a while I have to wonder why I am playing such a sadistic game. Take some of the enemies for example: the flying helicopter thing that can be a pain to hit and the teleporting witch that moves your aim around when you have to hit it. Overall the game is good, especially for the price, but some of the moments are unbearingly hard, and some are basically a walk in a park. On an unrelated subject, Sam's comments seem now seriously overdone , and quickly become dull and boring. I can't help remembering in previous SS games the badly sampled "now that's what I'm talking about" just as you got some real weapon, but in SS3 Sam always talks. And the impression he gives is not good. I mean, really, why would I ever want to imagine myself being such a shovinistic idiot as Sam is trying to be? "Ugh I am gonna destroy this, 'cause I am a moron" No, Thank You.

I have to give this game a zero for shamelessly putting an ad for one of their other games right on the menu screen. The DLC's are also mostly cosmetic and hardly seem to add anything to the game. In other words just another game where business practices have interfered with game enjoyment. Where would be get if every game had an ad for some other? Oh, also this game is a very good exercise in chaos theory.

Everytime I see those people struggling in "your favourite online fps" I can't help wonder if games like these destroyed their common sense.

Airmech is a moba type game where you play a robot that also transforms into a plane. The main problem in it is that the control mechanics are cumbersome and the build mechanics detract from gameplay , since you have to pick up the created units with your plane, and drop them somwhere. It is basically a RTS where instead of clicking units and giving them orders you pick them up with your avatar (which you control with the mouse) and drop them somewhere. While this might be fun for some people, I say why not cut the intermediary and either move to a proper RTS game or move to a DOTA type game.

Seeing the current critic score of 74 makes me wonder what all these people are thinking. I know, you could say, read all the reviews and find out, but I know this game is not that bad. And some terrible games are rated a lot higher. Go figure. This game wins my award for funniest tutorial (and a lot more) , which is especially good to see considering many games have terrible humor. I guess metacritic is developing a rotten tomatoes syndrome. Laugh while you can.

PlanetSide 2
5
User ScoreNevermind
Nov 28, 2012
Planetside 2 is a game that showed great promise. 2000 player servers in a FPS game seems too good to be true, and this game appears to have done just that. However, once past the first impression, you cant really ignore the game's problems. Unbearable fps (15 fps on a gaming rig, really?) means you will be looking at a slideshow most of the time. Terrible balance, 50 vs 5 players is common here. The spawn rooms seem just thrown on the map, and many times only one exist which means it will be well camped. They also seem to be designed to be easily camped. Sometimes the spawn place will be so far from any place of tactical value, that defending a base is virtually impossible. Even something as simple as the colours can work against you here. The game's bluish buildings means the blue and violet teams are well camouflaged compared with the red team, which in addition has a lot of red minimap icons obscuring the (wait for it) red enemy indicators. But ultimately it is the lack of reward that ruins this game for me. When waiting 10 minutes to capture a region with seemingly no enemy players whatsoever , I can't help to feel bored and useless, because , after all, I am. The game does not reward teamplay, it is not balanced when it comes to vehicles, it is not balanced map-wise,It runs worse then the latest games with much, much worse graphics, it is full of bugs, and it takes a very, very long time to do anything useful, or fun, or, most of the time, neither. As one PS2 developer put it, when talking about the game's poor framerate: "If you hear someone saying it's easy, have them show you their game with hundreds of people and dozens of vehicles within a single 100 meter firefight. I'd happily accept their advice. *grin* ".

There is no excuse to release a game with such a poor interface. Sure, the gameplay might be there, but in the heat of the battle there is no time for scrolling through the units and looking at obscure tooltips. The graphics are crappy, the interface is a pain, and there are much better games out there. Why bother?

This was a pretty good game. The storyline was good, with a nice twist which makes you wonder why this game wasn't polished a bit better. In the game there are a lot of notes that apparently tried to explain how things work in communist Russia, but to best put it they were childish and annoying. The artwork also seems somewhat mismatched in places, for example the crates and posters look like they came out of a cartoon, but everything else is done differently. Apart for that, everything is fine, you get to shoot a bunch of weapons, well, not really by any modern standard, but at least they are functional, well, at least two out of the five are, and you wield the time altering weapon whose name i forget right now. But, apart from this, the game has a good storyline, and once you finish it it will leave you thinking about the story and everything that happened. Trust me, I was surprised, and let's just say i have seen "The Matrix". Oh yeah, and did I say there is plenty of ammo? This game should get extra points just for that. No more "I have one bullet left" moments here.

Do you want a textbook example of a videogame failure? This game. Why? Because Splash Damage has learn absolutely nothing from Quake Wars' failures, and included all of them in this game. This game isn't worth the screen real estate the name is printed on. The only thing I cant figure out is why was Bethesda behind it. Who knows.

Omg, what the heck is this? That was basically my first thought playing this game. But, that said, the game captures the Serious Sam spirit quite perfectly. Too perfectly , really, because it can be quite hard in the end. Original elements, random enemies, 8 bit retro look, it really is a wonder this got only such a low score, knowing how some reviews are made. Perhaps the colors were not bright enough, or maybe this is not a natural progression to the latest ukulele themed colorful block puzzle. Ok this is not the greatest game ever made, but if you ever find that game for $5 please let me know. I believe my expectations were met considering the price, and in that context this gets a good review considering the original bits and retro look, and the original 8 bit arcade music - oh, wait...

I usually would give this game a lower rating, because it has some things that could be better. You know, it's the little things that count. But for all it faults, it gets one thing right. The shooting bit. No I am not joking, you know those games, where you shoot someone only to find out they do not die, and they really should once you empty a full clip in them? This does not happen in War Inc. You kill someone , they are dead. So the shooting, aiming, and the weapons are nice. What isn't so nice is that this is still a beta, so things keep changing. Also, the maps are not all very balanced. Some teams might win because of the map. The weapons have an unlock system, but it isn't quite terrible. You could unlock a weapon for a day or more to try it, you can even pick up fallen weapons off the ground if, say you are low on ammo. Some weapons can be unlocked permanently, with one of the game's currency. The graphics are another one of those "could be better" kind of things. For instance there are a few pixels flashing, and when i first played it distracted me quite a bit. iirc the graphics are quite demanding, also, at least I thought so for how good they look. The last is that, well, the number of players, is at present time, how to say, slightly diminishing. In conclusion, this game can be fun. Capturing flags a la battlefield, deathmatching or even playing sabotage, where you plant / disarm a bomb on a map sarcastically named "dust quarry" , this game certainly shows you do not need to pay $99 for the latest game to have fun. Sure, you might miss out on the latest graphics, but so what. They will be old tomorrow anyway.

Tribes: Ascend
4
User ScoreNevermind
Apr 28, 2012
Tribes:Ascend seems like a good game, and is mostly. However, this is the kind of game where the little things are eventually going to become annoying. I mean mostly weapons with area of effect only, deathmatch where kills do not matter (but holding the flag does) , capture the flag maps that seem to be impossible to defend, a generator that doesn't do much on the best days, and loses the game on the others. Even the unlock system is pretty obnoxious, you get to unlock a weapon or a class that might be virtually useless, without any information whatsoever, and they do cost a bit. The practice/training session could let you try all classes, but no. That would be too easy, I guess. The innovative skiing system is nice, but tbh I wasn't really so good at it. I can ski, but I can't really sky and shoot so much. I guess I should mention, most of the weapons fire plasma projectiles with weight, so you have to lead your aim. What's worse, they inherit your speed and momentum, so if you jump, for example, the plasma "blob" will inherit the jump momentum, and go slightly upwards. This is actually a pretty neat change from the usual point and click. Oh, yeah, and I forgot to mention the voice chat spam. "Shazbot" will become a part of the english vocabulary soon enough, and part of your nightmares way before that. I did have fun killing some guy or the other, so the game has it's moments, but for me, games are about winning. I couldn't figure a way to win in this game. Maybe you can.
